The shoulder point is located on the sole of your foot just below the pinky toe. Its shaped like a rectangle where the upper portion of the area corresponds to the upper part of your shoulders , and the lower portion corresponds to the lower section of your shoulders, closer to the shoulder blades. Theres a shoulder reflexology point on each foot, and the left foot is for the left shoulder and the right foot is for the right shoulder.

A small rubber ball can be the perfect self-massage tool for the infraspinatus;muscle.
Not only is this spot a bit tricky to find, its also hard to reach. If youre doing self-massage, this significantly increases the difficulty level. It virtually requires a couple tips and tricks. Specifically, you really need just the right kind of ball fairly firm and small for accuracy, and a bit grippy so that you can easily trap it between your shoulder blade and a wall without it slipping. Most toy/dollar stores have small bouncy rubber balls. It should be about 23 centimetres in diameter . These are just about ideal, although they can be a little bit too hard for some people. A squash ball is a perfect way to start off more gently, but its also a little too soft to finish the job. So you really want both: a squash ball to start, a harder rubber ball once the tissue is warmed up.
Squash balls are good & grippy & soft enough to be a gentle way to start massaging a thin, sensitive muscle like the;infraspinatus.
And then you need some practice. Its not rocket science, but it wont go smoothly the first time you do it either. Its almost impossible for the average person to accurately explore muscle this way. Ive watched people try. They drop the ball. It ends up on the other side of their back. Even if they get in into the right area, it quickly moves control comes only with more practice.
Treatment Goals For A Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder, technically called adhesive capsulitis, is a common condition that causes stiffness, pain, and discomfort in your shoulder joint. It occurs when the range of motion of your shoulder joint is reduced to the point that it feels as though your shoulder is frozen.
Frozen shoulder usually affects people between the ages of 40 and 70. Its caused by inflammation, repetitive motions, or extended periods of disuse. Lack of mobility when youre healing from a medical condition, procedure, or injury can also be a cause. At times the cause is unknown.
Initially, the symptoms of this syndrome are minor but progressively get worse. Due to the discomfort and loss of range of motion, people who have frozen shoulder tend to use their shoulder less, which further reduces mobility.
Not using your shoulder can exacerbate your symptoms, so its important to keep your shoulder mobile. Massages and stretches can increase your range of motion and alleviate pain.

How Is Bursitis Of The Shoulder Diagnosed
A sports medicine doctor or physiotherapist diagnoses shoulder bursitis through a variety of tests. These tests may involve movements of the shoulder, as well as pinpointing the location of your pain. For mild forms of bursitis, you may not even require medical treatment or diagnosis. However, in more severe cases, your medical practitioner may aspirate the bursa at the shoulder to extract the fluid build-up for further testing. This is commonly done in cases where septic bursitis, meaning an infection is present, is suspected. If the bursa is infected, surgery may be required.

Studies have shown that massage has a positive effect in reducing chronic shoulder pain. Problems from nerves in the shoulder girdle typically coming from the large nerve bundle called the brachial plexus can often translate as pain in the neck, leading you to believe that the neck is the origin of the pain. Stretches For A Frozen Shoulder
Prime your shoulder muscles for movement by warming up your body. You can do this by taking a warm shower or bath. Or use a heating pad on the affected area.
Stretch to your point of sensation without causing pain. Be gentle and avoid forcing any of the movements. Do these stretches several times throughout the day.
What Happens During The Massage
Before your deep tissue massage, your massage therapist will want to know about your problem areas. A deep tissue massage can involve your entire body or just one area.
Once ready, youll be asked to lie on your back or stomach, under a sheet. Your level of undress is based on your comfort, but the area being worked on will need to be exposed.
The massage therapist will warm up your muscles using a lighter touch. Once youre warmed up, theyll start working on your problem areas. Theyll use deep kneading and stroking with varying amounts of intense pressure.

Deep Tissue Massage Therapy To Treat Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
- Deep Tissue Massage does wonders in cases of soft tissue injury. Other than providing stimulation locally, massage therapy also encourages production of Anti-Stress hormones which in turn decreases pain and discomfort. Massage therapy should not be done in cases of joint swelling.
- During the initial stage of a rotator cuff injury, light and superficial massage should be done. Deep tissue massage should be started after pain and swelling have calmed down.

Does Cupping Really Work
For me, yes, I experience less soreness in my shoulders after my cupping sessions. But, cupping is an alternative therapy so youre going to have to decide this yourself after speaking to your doctor. After speaking to my doctor, I wanted to see what cupping massage benefits Id experience and if it would help my shoulder pain.
While the improvement doesnt last for more than a few days, it is definitely worth it for me to have a few days with less pain. Since I only see my physical therapist once a week, I cant say how effective it would be for more frequent cupping.

A Slap Tear Is A Tear Of The Superior Labrum And Often The Long Head Of The Biceps
The labrum is a ring of cartilage that deepens the socket for more controlled movement. In a SLAP tear, the bone rolls up to move the whole arm up in space, but for some reason, the rotator cuff fails to counter the force of that movement so theres equal glide back into the socket. The labrum is the next line of defense, and it should act like a guardrail on a highway, bouncing the ball back into the socket.
But you can only drive so long against a guardrail before it gives, Russell explains. Sooner or later, the humeral head will breach the labrum, and it almost always starts at the top and front of the joint, where the ligamentous and joint capsule protection is;the least and where the human arm tends to go.
What Is Tendinopathy Of The Shoulder
Tendinopathy is a term used to describe any type of damage to a tendon and includes tendinitis, tendinosis and tenosynovitis.
Tendinopathy of the shoulder happens when a tendon becomes irritated, inflamed, weak and damaged and, although it can be caused by an injury, it is often the result of overuse and repetitive movements.
Tightness of the muscles causes restriction and compression around the shoulder joint and can compress and restrict the tendons, leading to irritation and weakness of the tendons or tendon, which then leads to inflammation, damage and pain.
As with bursitis, rest and icing is usually helpful as well as specific stretches but massage can also to help relax and release tightness in the muscles around the shoulder joint, improving the movement and releasing the tightness and compression on the tendons.
A very specific massage technique called transverse fibre friction developed by Dr James Cyriax has been shown to stimulate fibroblast and collagen production as well as breaking down scar tissue and aligning fibres.
Massage Therapy And Shoulder Impingement
Whether it starts as a small ache when you raise your arm or immediate pain after an injury, shoulder impingement syndrome can affect your athletic performance as well as your everyday life. Impingement syndrome, sometimes called swimmers or throwers shoulder, can cause considerable pain, muscle weakness and even loss of motion in the shoulder joint. Luckily, regular visits to a massage therapist can help reduce your symptoms and get back in the game.
Every time you move your arm, your shoulder tendons pass through a narrow space between your humorous and the tip of your scapula, a bony structure called the acromion. Anything that narrows this space can cause your tendons to get caught under the acromion. Over time, the impingement can cause tendinitis, especially supraspinatus and infraspinatus tendinitis, and fibrosis.
In cases of primary impingement, a malformation of the acromion traps the tendons. The malformation is usually a result of aging or rotator cuff injury. In other cases, the head of the humorous is not stable in the shoulder joint and pinches tendons nearer your chest. This is called secondary impingement and is often caused by weakness in the musculature of the rotator cuff. The pain is more likely to flare up when the arm is raised.

How To Massage Shoulders
Kneading Technique: Use your thumb to knead the shoulder, adding the fingers of the other hand to help apply more pressure.
Circular Technique: Apply pressure to the shoulder with the fingertips, working in a circular motion up to the neck muscle.
Once you have finished the neck and shoulder massage on one side, move to the other, then glide both hands down the back in long, flowing strokes to finish up the massage.
Acromial Impingement Shoulder Bursitis And Supraspinatus Or Other Rotator Cuff Muscle Tendonitis/tear
All of these injuries have to do with the failure of downward/backward glide, which is also a failure of all the rotator cuff muscles. Powered by the deltoid, the humerus rolls up to bring the arm overhead, Russell explains. If the rotator cuff cannot or does not glide the ball down into the glenoid fossa, the bone eventually hits the acromion, which sits above the humeral head like a carport above a car.
Damage to any structure from the humeral head to the acromion can result. Eventually, one can expect arthritis as well, since a poorly seated joint doesnt allow the cartilage surfaces to stay against one another and to be nourished by the joint fluid.

Benefits Of Massage For Shoulder Pain
Your shoulder is made up of many bones, tendons and muscles that all serve different functions, and stress or tension in them can develop into shoulder pain. How Massage Helps Shoulder Dysfunction
The key thing is that the rotator cuff corrects the gliding junction of the arm and shoulder blade, Russell explains. A ball-and-socket joint must balance roll and glide. The bone must be able to have a good gliding range of motion. Restoring the gliding range of motion, and soothing and freeing overworked muscles that have been beat up by working with the wrong line of pull, is where massage therapy really shines.
To be effective, however, massage therapists need to look at the rotator cuff as the core stabilization system for the glenohumeral joint. If you accept that, then its important to understand that range of motion in the shoulder is more than flexion and extension, Russell says. It includes the humerus being centered on the glenoid fossa.
Range of motion, then, involves evaluating the position and fixity of the humeral head itself, and guiding it back to the center of the joint manually. It will often appear that the pecs are tight, Russell adds. But if you put the palms of your hands on the outside of the humeral head and slowly move it posterior/ inferior-ward, youll discover that what youre seeing is an anterior humeral head.
Finally, self-care techniques for rotator cuff and other shoulder injuries include ice for inflammation and heat for muscle tightness. If there is focal inflammation, try recommending the use of ice where the inflammation is and heat on any parts of;the muscles that are not;inflamed.
