Epsom Salt Bath For Back Pain
This is one of the best ways to use Epsom salt for back pain, so much so that doctors recommend them to patients struggling with arthritis to relieve pain.
Heres how to do it :
Run a bath, it doesnt need to be too hot but it should be at least be warm. Make sure that its a comfortable temperature for you.
Add 1-2 cups of Epsom salt to your bath water
Just sit back and relax for 12-30 minutes.
You can do this every day if you need to.
If you are pregnant, an Epsom salt bath for lower back pain is effective and safe as long as the bath water isnt hot, it should only be warm. It can also relieve any other cramping and relieve stress too.
Some Evidence Against Absorption: Israeli Soldiers Smear Magnesium All Over Themselves In High Concentrations And It Doesnt Get Inside
This quote from a book by Dr. Kenneth B. Singleton34 was submitted to me by a reader as an allegedly authoritative opinion on absorption:
Regularly bathing in hot water to which Epsom salts have been added can help draw out toxins from the skin.
Actually, that is not an authoritative opinion: its a vague and silly one. That anyone would mistake it for authoritative is rather depressing.35 The only thing that can determine whether magnesium heptahydrate is absorbed from a bath is careful, thorough testing opinion is irrelevant, even from a real expert.
Fortunately, not all my mail is so depressingly gullible. Hat tip to reader Bryan B. who found an interesting Israeli military study and sent it to me. Its a safety study of a lotion developed to improve protection against chemical warfare agents.36 Like suntan lotion, but for chemical burns. Yikes.
This lotion had rather a lot of magnesium in it. And soldiers were not poisoned by the magnesium. Indeed, it didnt appear to cross the skin at all: there were no significant differences in magnesium levels between the placebo and the study groups in any of the applications. The delivery system lotion could be quite different than soaking in water with dissolved magnesium sulfate. But it is pretty noteworthy evidence that absorption is minimal or nil when putting high concentrations of Mg on the skin.
What Causes Sciatic Nerve Pain
Cases of sciatica are caused by either the sciatic nerve, or connecting nerves, being pinched or compressed under the piriformis. There are multiple reasons this might happen, including: pregnancy, tights hips, loose joints after menopause, heaving lifting without proper alignment, sitting too much, a herniated or bulging disk, degenerative spine conditions, and poor alignment of the hips and spine.
The good news is that you can find relief from sciatic pain and prevent future incidences naturally. A healthy spine and proper muscular skeletal alignment will give your life and overall health a quality boost!

Skin Is Definitely Waterproof
If Epsom salts get into the body, its definitely not by osmosis. Osmosis doesnt work through the skin, because skin is almost perfectly waterproof. If it werent, you would dehydrate like an earthworm on a sunny sidewalk. .
The top layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, consists of dead, dry cells stuffed with a kind of embalming substance, keratin, a fibrous protein. Water cant go through or around the keratin, thanks to a microscopic uniquely structured fatty layer between them, which no one knew existed until 2012.22 The presence and arrangement of lipids betwixt the keratin molecules results in exceedingly low permeability.23
There are routes past the stratum corneum, shunt pathways such as hair follicles and sweat glands, and some water molecules end up there, in contact with relatively naked cells but these are waterproof in their own right.
Plus we have glands that coat the skin in waterproofing oils! So theres that too. When those oils wash off, the dead skin cells can soak up a little water and swell a bit, like soaked beans.
Remember the main myth about osmosis, explained in detail above: osmosis is the movement of solvents across membranes, not the stuff dissolved in them .
What is waterproof is osmosis-proof by definition. The skin is an effective barrier to diffusion of water molecules and therefore of osmosis. This is not to say that nothing gets past the skin, just not much, and definitely not water.
Skin: also a booze barrier
Warnings And Precautions While Using Heat Therapy
When using heat therapy, the heat source should be warm, as tolerated, and not hot. As a general rule, heat therapy can be used for 15 to 20 minutes, with breaks in between to avoid skin damage. Overuse of heat therapy may cause burns, scalding, or ulcers. It is a smart idea to place a cloth barrier between your skin and the heat source . It is also advisable to avoid laying directly on the heat source to prevent trapping of additional heat and potentially causing skin damage or permanent changes in skin color.
If you have specific medical conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, poor circulation, spinal cord injuries, diabetes mellitus, and/or rheumatoid arthritis, it is advised to avoid heat therapy. Heat in these conditions may cause excessive burns, skin ulceration, and/or increased inflammation.3

How Long Do You Soak An Infection In Epsom Salt
Mix 1-2 tablespoons of unscented Epsom salts into one quart of warm water and soak your foot for 15 minutes at a time. Do this several times a day for the first few days. Always dry your foot completely after soaking. Soaking your ingrown or infected toe will help relieve the pain and pressure of an infection.

Newly Found Relief with Strange but Simple Method
I’m an 18-year-old senior in high school and I’ve been suffering with sciatica for 2 years. I’ve seen countless doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, etc. From acupuncture to cryotherapy, I’ve tried every physical method to treat my pain. Nothing has worked. They believe my pain started from a sports-related back injury. I have two bulging discs in my lumbar spine. The pin generally is focused in my upper right buttock, but spreads down my leg throughout the day.
About 3 days ago, I tried something new. I filled a bucket with hot water, and put 2 cups of apple cider vinegar and a handful of epsom salt in it. I soak my affected side’s foot in the water until it cools, and get straight into bed after. No walking or getting up after it soaks.
I feel like this method is working. The pain has not been spreading to my leg and I am managing my pain in a much better way. I would recomend you try this method because I pretty much lost hope of being able to walk without a limp, but today I played pick up basketball with my friends for the first time since my injury. Since it is a static magnet it may take a few weeks before one sees improvement BUT, if you take statins forget everything I wrote as statins cause the leg problems.
FYI, the book says sciatica in the left leg is a sodium defiency.

Says Who How Does It Work
When I went through my massage therapy training an unusually rigorous 3-year full-time program my instructors suggested Epsom salt baths as a good thing to prescribe to our clients. No scientific basis for this idea was ever presented: it was just one of those things that everybody knew, a folk remedy justified by the generations of wise old wives and bathers. The physiology of it certainly wasnt explained. No one ever mentioned it being a source of magnesium, even though that is by far the most plausible explanation for any benefit it might have.
Mostly my colleagues and mentors just made vague references to detoxifying the muscles, perhaps by osmosis. Nothing more exact was ever discussed because, frankly, I am sure that not one person in the building could have even named the compound magnesium sulfate.3 Me included.
I have wondered ever since if there was anything to it.
I am strongly skeptical of all health-related claims involving toxins, mostly because people who toss that word around never seem to know which toxins they are talking about.4 I have thoroughly studied the subject of post-exercise muscle soreness probably the leading cause of hot baths only to discover that its basically been proven that there are no known remedies for it.5 And after a long, hot Epsom salt bath of my own one night which had no apparent effect on my unusually sore muscles, as usual I decided it was time for a proper reality check. I started studying this topic .
What Are The Symptoms Of Sciatica
Common symptoms that the sciatic nerve is being compressed include:
- Shooting pain from the back, through the buttock, and down the back of the leg on either side
- A tingling or pins and needles feeling in the toes and/or feet
- Numbness in the buttock or down the affected leg
- Difficulty walking
- Hip pain
- A burning sensation in the lower back
Sitting for more than a few minutes and then standing usually brings on very intense sciatica nerve pain.

Whether you use your own hot tub or one that belongs to a gym or community, check to make sure the tub is clean and properly maintained. The water should be cleaned and tested regularly. A poorly maintained hot tub can lead to a skin infection called hot tub folliculitis.
Movies, television, and even social media often depict people lounging in a hot tub for hours on end with a cocktail in their hand. This isnt ideal or safe. Heres how to go about your hot tub soak to maximize the benefits and minimize the risks:
- Avoid very hot water. Make sure the water isnt too hot, with an absolute maximum of 104°F .
- Stay hydrated. Hot tubs make you sweat and leave you dehydrated. Drink water plenty of water, but avoid alcohol before or during your soak.
- Limit your time in the tub. Dont stay in too long, especially if youre not used to it. At the maximum temperature, set your limit at 10 to 15 minutes. You can stay in for longer at a lower temperature if youre used to it. Signs that you need to get out right away include:
- lightheadedness, dizziness
- skin redness
- shortness of breath

A Young Woman With Sciatica
I worked with a young woman who had sciatica. Allegedly, her sciatic nerve was pinched by her piriformis muscle a reasonably common scenario and sending hot zaps of pain down her leg. She came to me with this diagnosis already in place. She also had some tingling in her feet. The description of her symptoms did, indeed, sound a lot like a nerve impingement problem. On the face of it, it did seem likely that her sciatic nerve was being pinched.
However, a couple things didnt add up. For instance, she had no numbness at all no dead patches of skin, which are highly characteristic of true nerve impingement. Instead, she had a lot of dead heaviness in the leg, a different kind of numb feeling that is much more closely associated with muscle knots than nerve pinches and a lot more common.
I quizzed her carefully about the quality of her pain. She assured me it was zappy and electrical just as you would expect of nerve pain. Yet something didnt seem quite right. I couldnt shake the impression that she was interpreting an intense non-neurological pain as a zappy pain simply due to her strong belief that she had a nerve problem. When you think a pain is nervy, youre going to interpret, feel and describe it in nervy terms.
So I did some experimenting, and clinched the case:
This largely eliminates a diagnosis of sciatic nerve impingement.

Make Your Calendar And Work Space Ergonomic
As we mentioned, sitting for long periods, especially in a standard work station will either aggravate your existing back pain or potentially lead to a whole host of alignment based health issues! Take frequent breaks and move your body. Get outside for fresh air and take short walk. Build in time to move your body throughout the day. Additionally, invest in a quality chair with lumbar support or use a system that builds your strength while you sit such as a Swopper-like chair or yoga ball seat. Consider a standing work station that allows you to adjust your range of movement throughout the day.
When lifting heaving objects be sure to NEVER twist while lifting and be sure to lift with your legs not your back!

Some questions too common to ignore some questions too funny not to try to answer and one or two that are just good questions.
Q. Why would the FDA allow studies to be published that show Epsom salts are more effective than their muscle relaxers and pain pills? For $1/lb of epsom salt this would kill their market and profits.
A. Industry protectionism for baths? Preposterous! The FDA has literally nothing to do magnesium sulfate research. Any Big Pharma/FDA conspiracy against Epsom salt is clearly failing, because the stuff is available literally everywhere, and the FDA actually approves it for use as a laxative and a variety of external uses. Approval seems like kind of a funny way of implementing an anti-salt agenda. In short, this question is just knee-jerk anti-mainstream medicine paranoia based on major misunderstandings of what the FDA is and how it works. Nevertheless, it is a concern Ive often see expressed, so I decided it was time to address it here.
Ironically, if there is any relevant commercial bias, it is one in favour of Epsom salts. For instance, the Epsom Salt Council exists to promote the industry and is eager to let everyone know the benefits of our product and spread the word about the wonder that is Epsom salt. They prominently publish uncritical and unequivocal claims of medical benefit on their website.
