How Should I Sleep With Hip Pain

Why back pain is worse in the morning

To sleep more comfortably with hip pain, you may want to use pillows strategically. If you are a back sleeper, place one under your knees. If you sleep on one side, put a pillow between the knees. And if you are a stomach sleeper, you can place a flat pillow under your stomach to avoid unhealthy spine curvature during the night.

Main Causes Of Morning Back Pain

Why is back pain worst first thing in the morning, and what can you do about it?

I woke up with it is an amazingly common description of how low back pain started.

Why? Is sleeping dangerous? Probably not: waking up with back pain rarely indicates a serious problem. But both mornings and backs are unusually vulnerable to some common minor sources of pain.

This is mostly about chronic back pain thats at its worst in the morning, a common symptom pattern. People who are more or less pain-free during the day may still suffer for a while every day after waking up. But attacks of acute back pain are also much more common in the first few hours of the day see Steffens et al.2 and that phenomenon may be related to why chronic back pain tends to be bad in the morning.

Morning back pain is a tough problem to treat because most of it probably has several subtle chronic causes, but there may be some opportunities for treatment.

Treating Pain By Its Rhythms

This research points the way toward a different way of treating pain, one that accounts of the daily fluctuations in pain.

This is known as chronotherapy, which Ghasemlou said, is the easiest way of using circadian rhythms to our advantage.

Patients are often given medications so the amount of drug in their blood remains above a certain level.

Usually if a patient gets prescribed drugs, its going to be something like take two pills in the morning, take two pills at night, said Ghasemlou.

But because their pain fluctuates throughout the day, they might do better with one pill in the morning and three at night.

This approach has been used with some success for

What Else Can I Do For Back Pain

Gently moving and strengthening the back will help to prevent it from seizing up and becoming more prone to injury. Devils Claw is an anti-inflammatory herb that helps to maintain the health of muscles and joints and it can be used to help ease pain and discomfort caused by back pain. If your back pain becomes unmanageable, make an appointment with your doctor.

The Scariest Type Of Morning Back Pain: Inflammatory Back Pain

Pain Management: Why Does My Calf Muscle Hurt?

The closest thing to back pain that is truly prominent in the morning is inflammatory back pain , or spondyloarthritis.3 Although IBP is well known to medical science, it often eludes diagnosis, its biology is mysterious, and morning symptoms specifically are a stumper, as unexplained as joints that ache before a storm. Its just something IBP does.

But dont panic! Although studies have confirmed that morning is a common time for inflammatory back pain to flare up, they have also shown that the connection is not strong or exclusive.4 In fact, most morning stiffness and pain is not pathologically inflammatory. Its just that IBP is the only official morning back pain culprit.

The pain of IBP tends to be quite severe. If its not actually waking you up, its probably not IBP, or its a minor case.

When should you consider the possibility of IBP? Basically if your morning back is particularly bad: nasty and very consistent morning symptoms. The diagnosis is also more likely if you have other signs of this kind of back pain. Heres a good inflammatory back pain quiz, and heres my own quick checklist of reasons to ask your doctor about spondyloarthritis:5

Medical Conditions That Cause Back Pain

Conditions that can cause back pain include:

  • a slipped disc this can cause back pain and numbness, tingling and weakness in other parts of the body
  • sciatica this can cause pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the lower back, buttocks, legs and feet
  • ankylosing spondylitis this causes pain and stiffness that’s usually worse in the morning and improves with movement
  • spondylolisthesis this can cause lower back pain and stiffness, as well as numbness and a tingling sensation

These conditions are treated differently to non-specific back pain.

Very rarely, back pain can be a sign of a serious problem such as:

  • a broken bone in the spine
  • an infection
  • cauda equina syndrome
  • some types of cancer, such as multiple myeloma

If you see a GP with back pain, they’ll look for signs of these.

Myths About The Causes Of Morning Back Pain

There are some popular ideas about what causes back pain that are probably wrong :

  • Bad mattresses are generally over-rated as a factor in back pain.
  • Psychological factors are also often given too much weight. The mind is relevant to a lot of chronic pain, but morning back pain is particularly unlikely to be psychosomatic.
  • Intervertebral disc swelling is a popular specific scapegoat, but its highly speculative and quite likely wrong.

MS tends to throw us curveballs, however. The ways in which we clench parts of the body, even during sleep, are something we might want to pay more attention to, especially if we are experiencing pain as a result.

Sometimes, these mornings of pain and tension indicate untreated MS symptoms, and sometimes, they indicate areas in the body where we harbor tension and stress without realizing it.

    Myofascial Pain Syndrome And/or Fibromyalgia

There are two common causes for widespread moderate body pain, both somewhat mysterious and controversial, both known for affecting the back more than other areas, and both known for their morning hijinks:

  • Myofascial pain syndrome is an infestation of too many trigger points sore, aching patches of soft tissue that often seem to ease with massage and heat, but which are mostly unexplained and difficult to treat.
  • Fibromyalgia , a disease of increased soreness and sensitivity, fatigue, and sleep disturbance, exercise intolerance, and the infamous fibro fog .
  • Theres likely lots of overlap between these conditions. Fibromyalgia isnt really an explanatory diagnosis it just labels a common pattern of symptoms that could have several different causes. MPS is a hypothetical problem with muscle tissue that is a possile explanation for some body pain, and that type of pain is extremely common in fibromyalgia patients.

Fibromyalgia is associated with morning back pain because:

  • People with FM rarely feel rested. The condition either causes or is caused by fragmented sleep and a lack of deep restorative sleep. Fatigue makes any pain worse, and this is probably felt mostly acutely in the morning, gradually yielding to the stimulations of the day: exercise, sunlight, coffee, people, noise and so on. The morning-ness of fibromyalgia pain could also just be one of those things, an unexplained rhythm of the disease.
  • Treatment For Morning Back Pain

What should you do if you often wake up with back pain in the morning? The first step is to talk to a pain specialist to find the underlying cause that could be contributing to your issues. Sometimes, a simple lifestyle change can make the biggest difference such as replacing your old bed with a quality mattress.

Don’t Miss: Can Sciatica Cause Nausea

Why Is My Sciatica Pain Worse At Night

Like sitting, many people believe that if they lie down and get a good nights rest, their sciatica pain will be tremendously reduced by morning.

Unfortunately, also like sitting, some people are surprised and angry that they wake up in the middle of the night with a throbbing, shooting pain down the back of their leg.

Sciatica seems worse at night due to your sleeping position. Many people end up lying in a fetal or curled up position on their side. This causes the vertebrae in the spine to pinch or put more pressure on the sciatic nerve.

If you tend to sleep on your side, chances are that your sleeping position is what is causing your pain.

You can place an ergonomic pillow between the knees, or you can pull your top knee up, towards the chest, and push the bottom leg nearly straight. This will shift your hips and straighten the spine, preventing pressure on the nerve.

If you can find a way to sleep on your back most of the night, this would be the best way to sleep until your sciatic nerve is better.

When you wake up in the morning, you can start things off on the right foot by doing a few simple stretches before you get out of bed. Lie on your back and gently pull one knee up towards the chest while the other leg stays fully extended. Repeat with the other leg.

You can also pull both knees to your chest and hold this position for a count of 15. This gentle stretch will also help to prevent or at least minimize sciatica pain when you get up from the bed.

Do You Know The One Daily Habit That May Be Making Your Sciatica Pain Worse

Sore feet in the morning? Why does this happen?

Lately, weve had an increase of clients coming in for treatment with complaints of reoccurring sciatic pain.

And this week I wanted to share with you a conversation I had with one of our amazing clients, Mary, 49 from Carlsbad, CA.

    Sciatica / Back Pain

I was going about my usual Sunday. I went to the gym to perform my regular exercise routine and then went to the grocery store immediately after. I was feeling great and after unloading my groceries and putting away my laundry all of a sudden I felt a twinge on the right side of my lower back. I immediately knew something wasnt right.

I tried not to think too much about it and thought after a good nights sleep it would just go away on its own. But that wasnt the case

I woke up in the morning not being able to get out of bed without my husbands help. It was also extremely difficult to walk to the bathroom and even to put on my socks and shoes, .

Its been several weeks now and I just cant seem to get rid of this annoying, burning, and excruciating type pain which starts in my butt and ran down the back of my leg every time I take a step or bend forward. I now have difficulty sitting for more than 10 minutes because the pain increases every time. Can you please help me?

Why Is Nerve Pain Worse At Night

Stop for a minute and think about the last time you had a good nights rest. Has it been a day? Maybe two or three? Has it been a week since you had a restful night sleep without any burning or stabbing pain keeping you up?

It can seem like living with chronic nerve pain is a never-ending merry-go-round of discomfort. With a constant struggle during the day, why does it seem to flare up at night?

Lets take a closer look at why pain comes in droves when the sun comes down.

    Overdoing Exercise The Day Before

Regular exercise can help strengthen the back and reduce back pain. However, overdoing it at the gym or while playing sports can lead to morning back pain and stiffness.

It is important for a person to pay attention to their posture during and after any intense physical activity. Properly warming up and cooling down can also help reduce back pain and muscle stiffness the following day.

    Treatment

The following can help alleviate symptoms of exercise-related back pain:

    • applying hot or cold packs to the affected area
    • taking OTC anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen

    How Is Fibromyalgia Treated

There’s no cure for fibromyalgia. But treatment can help manage symptoms, ease pain, and improve a person’s overall health and quality of life. Treatments include lifestyle changes and medicines.

Doctors usually ask people to start with lifestyle changes before turning to medicines. Changes doctors may recommend include:

    • Regular exercise. Exercise may increase pain at first, but it can help make things better when done gradually and regularly. Some people get help from a physical therapist. Stretching and relaxation exercises can also help.
    • Stress-relief methods. These can include yoga, t’ai chi, and other disciplines, as well as light massage, breathing exercises, and acupuncture.
    • More sleep. Getting enough sleep is one of the most effective ways to treat fibromyalgia. It can help to avoid caffeine, sugary beverages, and sugary snacks late in the day. It can also help to go to bed and get up at the same time each day and limit napping during the daytime.
    • Healthy lifestyle choices. Eating healthy foods can help with fibromyalgia. Doing things you love can help too. Hobbies and other activities not only make people feel good about themselves, they also can distract them from the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

If lifestyle changes don’t help on their own, a doctor may prescribe medicines such as:

    • antidepressants: some can ease pain and tiredness, and help with sleep
    • anti-seizure medicines: some medicines used to treat epilepsy also can treat fibromyalgia symptoms

    Practice Good Sleep Habits

Morning Exercise Program for Back Pain, Herniated Disc, & Sciatica.

While the days stimulations may distract you from your pain, they wont help you sleep. Develop a sleep routine that helps prepare your body for rest. This might include turning off the TV and other screens 1-2 hours before bedtime, reading a book, or taking a warm bath. Anything that helps you relax and unwind before you head to sleep.

    Sleep Can Worsen Sciatica

Sciatica is generally described as sharp, shooting nerve pain down the back, buttocks, and thighs. It may cause tingling and numbness as well as pain, which can make it hard for you to walk or perform normal daily functions.

The condition is caused by the inflammation or pinching of the sciatic nerve root in the lumbar spine. This can stem from numerous spinal issues, including herniated discs, bone spurs and injuries. Unfortunately, many things can aggravate an already pinched or inflamed nerve, including improper sleep position.

Sciatica is often worse for people in the morning because of the way they sleep. Lying down in an incorrect position can further irritate nerve roots.

This is because of the way the spine rests when you are lying on your back. In this position, the exit spaces in the spinal column, called the foramina, become more compressed. This limits the space nerve roots have to travel through and can worsen the underlying cause of the sciatic pain.

For most patients, pharmacological agents may be part of their daily treatment for neuropathy. Treatments such as pregabalin and gabapentin are two of the most 8common pharmacological agents used in treating neuropathy. A 2017 review of previous studies that was published in the journal Pain and Therapy found that pregabalin improved quality of sleep in 77 percent of treated patients, while patients who took daily doses of gabapentin reported better sleep scores than those who took a placebo.

Still, patients who use gabapentin should be aware of the medications potential side effects. Always consult your doctor before taking any medication.
