    Frozen Shoulder Can Improve With Exercise Regimen

    Frozen shoulder can be caused by a thickening or tightening of the joint capsule and connective tissue that holds the shoulder together. It can occur from overuse, when illness or surgery keeps you from moving your arm for an extended time, or as a result of minor trauma. Women and people with diabetes tend to be at higher risk for frozen shoulder.

    The Problem Is Often The Rotator Cuff

    Rotator cuff tears are the most common cause of shoulder pain and disability in adults.

    “If you say your shoulder is hurting, someone will probably say, ‘It could be your rotator cuff.’ Eighty percent of the time, that is right or half right,” says Nicholson.

    Other common causes of shoulder pain include osteoarthritis, tendinitis, impingement, shoulder instability or a fracture.

    The rotator cuff comprises four small muscles and tendons coming off the shoulder blade. Its job is to stabilize the shoulder. Rotator cuff tears can happen suddenly from a fall or accident, or develop over time from repetitive motion and overuse.

    A tear weakens the shoulder and makes it difficult or painful to lift your arm overhead, even to do routine things like brushing your hair or getting dressed.

    About 50 percent of people with a rotator cuff tear can achieve pain relief and improved shoulder function through nonsurgical treatments, including rest, activity modification, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy and steroid injections.

    If these treatments don’t provide pain relief, doctors often recommend surgery to repair the torn rotator cuff.

    If youre experiencing pain when you sleep on your shoulder, some of these tips may help make sleeping more comfortable:

    • Avoid sleeping on the affected shoulder. Adjusting your sleeping position to the opposite side or to your or may help take pressure off an aching shoulder.
    • Utilize a pillow. Most of us change positions in our sleep. If youre concerned about rolling onto your sore shoulder, try placing a pillow in a way that will prevent you from doing so.
    • Stay active. Regular exercise can boost your blood flow and circulation. This, in turn, may help the muscles and tendons in your shoulder to heal faster if you have an injury. Additionally, performing gentle shoulder or may help reduce shoulder pain.
    • Know your limits. Avoid activities during the day that could lead to further irritation of your shoulder.
