  • Sit up with your back straight and your shoulders back. Your buttocks should touch the back of your chair.
  • Sit with a back support placed at the hollow of your back. Heres how to find a good sitting position when youre not using a back support or lumbar roll:
  • Sit at the end of your chair and slouch completely
  • Draw yourself up and accentuate the curve of your back as far as possible
  • Hold for a few seconds
  • Release the position slightly
  • Distribute your body weight evenly on both hips.
  • Keep your hips and knees at 90 degree angle. Use a foot rest or stool if necessary. Your legs should not be crossed and your feet should be flat on the floor.

    The sciatic nerve starts at the lower back, through the buttocks, and down each leg, and if its pinched, pain occurs in those areas. If you believe you have sciatica, some common symptoms to be aware of include:

    • Your legs or feet feel weak or numb

    Prop Onto Your Elbows

    While lying on your stomach, slowly prop yourself up onto your elbows. This maneuver should cause your low back to bend back slightly. Take a few deep breaths and try to relax in this position.

    Sciatica in both legs, also called bilateral sciatica, is less common than symptoms that exist in only one leg, called unilateral sciatica.     A sharp pain traveling down your leg or down both your legs is the most commonly reported symptom of back pain, and it may indicate more serious complications. Usually, this complication results from a sciatic nerve injury in the lower back.

    Bilateral sciatica occurs when the pain affects both legs at the same time. The condition may result in bladder and bowel dysfunctions.

    Its also possible to notice a malfunction or altered sensation in your genital area, which is indicative of cauda equina syndrome.

    When Is Surgery Considered

    Spinal surgery is usually not recommended unless you have not improved with other treatment methods such as stretching and medication, your pain is worsening, you have severe weakness in the muscles in your lower extremities or you have lost bladder or bowel control.

    How soon surgery would be considered depends on the cause of your sciatica. Surgery is typically considered within a year of ongoing symptoms. Pain that is severe and unrelenting and is preventing you from standing or working and youve been admitted to a hospital would require more aggressive treatment and a shorter timeline to surgery. Loss of bladder or bowel control could require emergency surgery if determined to be cauda equine syndrome.

    The goal of spinal surgery for sciatic pain is to remove the pressure on the nerves that are being pinched and to make sure the spine is stable.

    Surgical options to relieve sciatica include:

    Microdiscectomy: This is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove fragments of a herniated disk that are pressing on a nerve.

    • Laminectomy: In this procedure, the lamina that is causing pressure on the sciatic nerve is removed.
