Nerve pain, specifically sciatic nerve pain, can be one of the worst side effects of pregnancy. Sciatica pain occurs when a specific pressure is applied to a specific spot. Due to this reason, the pain could simply stop all on its own or it may subside after the delivery .

The Hip Flexor Stretch

This helps the muscles that are along the front of the hip. It is not uncommon to have tight hip flexors during pregnancy. That tightness can affect pelvic alignment and posture which leads to pain.

  • On your hands and knees step one foot in front so that your hip and knee are at a 90-degree angle.
  • Shift your weight forward until a stretch in the front of your back hip and leg is felt. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on the other side.

Pigeon pose in a chair This pose specifically targets the piriformis muscle. Try to find a chair in which you can sit comfortably with both feet flat on the floor and your thighs roughly parallel to the floor. Place your right ankle near your left knee and try to relax your right knee toward the floor. Repeat on the left side.

How Long Does Sciatica Last

While standing, the client squeezes her buttocks and holds for a count of 10. Repeat for a total of 10 reps. This helps to strengthen the gluteals and restore medial pelvic positioning.

Most of the sciatica women feel in later pregnancy is directly related to the position of the uterus on the sciatic region, pulling of the broad and sacrouterine ligaments, weakened abdominal muscles, the diastasis recti and postural misalignment. An effective solution is to move the baby off the sciatic region.

This can be accomplished in several different ways. If you are lucky enough to have body support systems , place your client in the prone position for at least one half-hour. This position gives the fetus more room to move and get off the sciatic region.

Sometimes one session in this position is enough to solve the problem. This posture often addresses the sacral soreness experienced by women whose babies are occiput posterior the back of the babys head is pressed against the mothers sacrum. Side-lying with the top leg in front of the bottom leg and bolstered with pillows tilts the pelvis enough to give the baby a chance to shift off of her lower back.

    Glute And Hamstring Foam Rolling

    A foam roller is an inexpensive piece of equipment you can use to help massage your muscles. Foam rolling is a great way to soothe and relax tight muscles that may be contributing to increased pain. The roller acts like a mini massage for tight muscles and connective tissue.

    Equipment needed: foam roller

    Target muscles: hamstrings, calf muscles, glutes, piriformis

  • Place a foam roller on the ground.
  • Sit on the foam roller, supporting yourself with your hands behind you.
  • Cross one foot over the other knee into a figure 4 position.
  • Slowly move your body back and forth over the foam roller until you find a tender spot.
  • Continue this movement over the sore area for 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Slowly move over the foam roller until you find another tender area. As in step 5, continue over the area for 30 to 60 seconds.
