What Painkillers Are Good For Shoulder Pain

6 Treatments To Help With Shoulder Pain

Early on in shoulder pain, if the pain is not severe, simple over the counter painkillers would usually suffice. They can be used in combination with hot or cold treatment. It is important that any medication is taken as advised and if you have other medical problems you should discuss with your doctor whether painkillers can interact with any of your regular medicines.

Paracetamol is a simple over the counter painkiller that has few side effects and doesnt interact with many other medications. For it to be effective it needs to be taken regularly .

If the pain is due to inflammation, then an anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen can be useful in helping to reduce pain and swelling. On its own an anti-inflammatory is not a great painkiller. Anti-inflammatories can interact with some other medications, they can cause heartburn or stomach ulcers if taken on an empty stomach, and they can cause kidney damage with prolonged use, so I do not recommend using prolonged courses of anti-inflammatories.

Other over the counter painkillers include topical anti-inflammatory gels. Most patients with shoulder pain that I see dont seem to get much benefit from topical gels and I think this is because the shoulder is a deep joint surrounded by large muscles such as the deltoid muscle.

If simple over the counter painkillers do not work, then prescription drugs may be necessary to help with shoulder pain. Our next go-to drug would be Co-codamol.

How Does Shoulder Arthritis Develop

Shoulder arthritis usually results from gradual wear and tear of the cartilage. Cartilage is present in every joint in the body it covers the surface of the bones inside the joints similar to Teflon on a ball bearing. Cartilage is a living tissue 2 millimeters to 3 millimeters thick about the thickness of one or two layers of cardboard. This makes the contact between bones softer. If the cartilage is intact, it can take multiple rotations with no wear of the surface because its smooth.

Shoulder arthritis typically develops in stages. First the cartilage gets soft , then it develops cracks in the surface , then it begins to fibrillate , and finally it wears away to expose the surface of the bone . As a result, it loses its ability to act as a smooth, gliding surface.

The cartilage doesnt wear away all at once over the entire surface of the bone in a joint. Instead, it wears at different rates in different parts. So if you consider the surface of a ball bearing that was covered with Teflon, this type of wear would be as if the Teflon had pits and the surface would now be irregular .

Once the surface becomes irregular, the cartilage may undergo further damage. It may begin to thin out, eventually leading to the bones of the shoulder rubbing against each other . Many people think that arthritis is bone-on-bone traction in the joint, but in reality arthritis is the process that can lead to the bone-on-bone traction.

    • Watch your form. Exercising incorrectly can also cause or worsen shoulder problems.
    • Warm up, even before deep stretching. Light shoulder rolls, gentle movements, or even a warm shower are all ways to warm up your muscles before exercise and stretching.

    Pendulum stretch for range of motion

    • Stand and bend at the waist.
    • Let your arm on the injured side hang straight down.
    • Keep your neck relaxed.
    • Move your arm in a circle up to 20 times.
    • Do once or more times in a day.

    Overhead shoulder stretch

    • Sit or stand to do this shoulder stretch.
    • Intertwine your fingers in front of you.
    • Bend your elbows and raise your arms above your head. You can also place your hands on your head or behind it.
    • Gently squeeze your shoulder blades together to move your elbows back.
    • Continue for up to 20 repetitions. Repeat 5 to 10 times a day.
