Spinal Disc Herniation & Sciatica : How to Cure Extreme Pain & Weakness in the Leg From Sciatica

If you are experiencing sciatica pain, dont fret! There are a lot of effective, conservative treatment options to employ in your road to recovery. Well preface this section by saying that we implore you to work with a medical professional if youre experiencing ongoing back pain. And, before beginning any new exercise regime, you should always discuss with your practitioner first, to make sure that the movements are appropriate for your specific injury.

How Can I Tell If Pain In My Hip Is A Hip Issue Or Sciatica

Hip problems, such as arthritis in the hip, usually cause groin pain, pain when you put weight on your leg, or when the leg is moved around.

If your pain starts in the back and moves or radiates towards the hip or down the leg and you have numbness, tingling or weakness in the leg, sciatica is the most likely cause.

Difficulty Or Impaired Leg Mobility

Individuals with sciatica may find it difficult to walk, stand or sit in due to the pain and other neurological manifestations of sciatica such as weakness or numbness of the lower extremities.

The signs and symptoms listed above may manifest for a couple of weeks or may last for many years. However, it is essential to note that not everyone will experience the same sciatica symptoms because causes of sciatica may differ from one person to another.

What Are The Symptoms

Classic sciatic pain starts in the low back and buttocks. It affects one leg traveling down the back of the thigh, past the knee, and sometimes into the calf and foot. The pain feels worse in the leg than in the back. It may range from a mild ache to severe burning or a shooting pain. Numbness or tingling can occur in your leg and foot. This usually is not a concern unless you have weakness in your leg muscles or foot drop.

Sitting usually causes the most pain because of the weight this position puts onto the discs. Activities, such as bending or twisting, worsen the pain, whereas lying down tends to bring relief. Running or walking may actually feel better than sitting or standing for too long.

Seek medical help immediately if you have extreme leg weakness, numbness in the genital area, or loss of bladder or bowel function. These are signs of a condition called cauda equina syndrome.

Q: When Should You Talk To A Doctor About Your Back Pain

Gridhrasi is what Sciatica is known as in Ayurveda. It is ...

If any of the following is going on you should consult with your doctor:

  • Your pain has been going on for longer than a month, despite resting from activities that make it worse.
  • Your pain is getting worse.
  • Your pain wakes you from sleep.
  • Your pain is in your low back but also is going down one or both of your legs.
  • You notice that one leg is becoming weaker than the other.

Q: Where should you turn if you want help in creating a plan to address back pain?

Physical therapists train as musculoskeletal experts they are the experts on muscles, bones and human movement. These professionals are the most qualified, aside from an orthopedic doctor, to assess back problems.

Since there are many factors that impact low back pain and many types of low back pain, it is a good idea to visit at least one time with a physical therapist for an evaluation and subsequent plan of care. This will give you an individually tailored plan with exercises that progress safely. The idea of core strengthening, while beneficial, is just one piece of the low back pain puzzle.

Acute Herniated Disc Injury

Herniated disc or bulging disc are the common cause of the sudden onset of “sciatica.” As the lumbar disc content protrudes out of its usual place, it may press into the narrow canal where the nerves exit your spine, thus nerve compression. If the injured lumbar disc has tears and the fluid inner content leaks to the surrounding area, it may cause chemical irritation to the surrounding nerve root as well.

Is The Weight Of Pregnancy The Reason Why So Many Pregnant Women Get Sciatica

Its true that sciatica is common in pregnancy but increased weight is not the main reason why pregnant women get sciatica. A better explanation is that certain hormones of pregnancy cause a loosening of their ligaments. Ligaments hold the vertebrae together, protect the disks and keep the spine stable. Loosened ligaments can cause the spine to become unstable and might cause disks to slip, which leads to nerves being pinched and the development of sciatica. The babys weight and position can also add pressure to the nerve.

The good news is there are ways to ease sciatic pain during pregnancy, and the pain goes away after birth. Physical therapy and massage therapy, warm showers, heat, medications and other measures can help. If you are pregnant, be sure to follow good posture techniques during pregnancy to also ease your pain.

Prop Onto Your Elbows

While lying on your stomach, slowly prop yourself up onto your elbows. This maneuver should cause your low back to bend back slightly. Take a few deep breaths and try to relax in this position.

While propping on your elbows, again try to monitor your symptoms for any changes. A decrease in your symptoms or centralization of your pain is a good sign here.

If your low back pain or sciatica worsens in the propped up position, simply return to lying face down and relax for a few more minutes, and then try to prop up again. Sometimes the pain is simply too intense to get into the propped up position. If this is the case, wait a few hours and try again.

Remain in the propped up position for a few minutes, and then slowly return to the prone lying position. Repeat this cycle for three to five repetitions, and then move on to the next exercise.

What Causes Sciatic Nerve Pain?

Hip fracture: A hip fracture is a break in one of the bones of the hip joint. It is a serious injury that almost always requires surgical repair, followed by physical therapy rehab.

If you suspect you may have fractured your hip, you should seek immediate medical attention. Hip fracture symptoms include severe pain in the hip or groin, swelling, bruising, inability to put weight on the leg, and inability to walk or get up after a fall. You can reduce your risk of hip fracture by doing exercises to strengthen your hip bones and improve balance.

Inguinal hernia: An inguinal hernia is a protrusion of soft tissues, such as the intestines, through a weak spot in the abdominal wall.

Symptoms of an inguinal hernia include a bulge in the groin on the side of the pubic bone, which becomes more obvious with coughing, straining, bending, or lifting heavy objects.

People with inguinal hernias often report groin pain and discomfort. The groin pain is described as a burning and aching sensation.10 You can reduce your risk of developing an inguinal hernia by maintaining healthy body weight and doing specific exercises to strengthen the abdominal muscles.

Sciatica: The sciatic nerve is a large nerve of the lower limb. The term sciatica refers to pain in the path of the sciatic nerve as it makes its way from the lower back, through the hip to the leg, all the way down to the foot.11

When Sciatica Is Serious

Certain symptoms of sciatica may indicate a serious medical condition, such as cauda equina syndrome, infection, or spinal tumors. These symptoms may include, but are not limited to:

  • Progressive neurological symptoms, such as leg weakness
  • Symptoms in both legs
  • Bowel and/or bladder dysfunction
  • Sexual dysfunction

It is advised to seek medical attention immediately if such symptoms develop. Sciatica that occurs after an accident or trauma, or if it develops in tandem with other symptoms like fever or loss of appetite, is also cause for prompt medical evaluation.

Possible Root Causes Of Sciatica Pain Which One Do You Have

What “sciatica” is might not be mysterious these days. It is not hard to understand the concept of a compressed, or pinched nerve, causing pain, weakness, and weird sensations going down your leg. However, the causes of sciatica pain are not that simple.

If you suffer from chronic lower back pain and wish to receive more support from me personally, feel free to check out my private Facebook group, where I answer questions regarding lower back pain on a daily basis. And you can be among people with similar condition supporting each other. Follow this link to request join.

First of all, “sciatica” is not all the same. Your “sciatica” pain could be drastically different than how your cousin experiences her “sciatica.”It depends on the location of the nerve irritation. It also matters the types of irritation the sciatic nerve is undergoing. Even more, the chronicity of the root problem may also play a role in the treatment of this pain.

Then, sometimes we see true “sciatica” pain and fake “sciatica” pain. Typical true “sciatica” pain is felt from the back of the hip to the outer thigh, then to the outer calf, finally possibly to the big toe. Fake “sciatica” pain may sound or feel like the real thing. However, they are commonly caused by referred pain from mechanical problems in the lower back/ hip region.

A Surprising Link: The Dental Back Pain Connection

If you suffer from chronic back pain but cannot determine the reason, the underlying cause could be surprising: a dental issue.

This unexpected connection is an example of referred pain, or pain in an area of the body other than where it originates. have shown that referred pain is due to the way the bodys nerve fibers converge on and send signals up and down the spinal column. These signals make it so that dysfunction or pain towards the top of the spinal column, such as a toothache, can influence the structures below, such as the upper and low back, and vice versa.

Referred pain can also result from the ways in which our muscles interact with and support each other. A common example is the link between the jaw disorder, or temporomandibular joint disorder, and chronic back pain. TMJ occurs when the hinge that connects the jawbone to the skull dysfunctions, causing pain in the jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement.

Patients with TMJ often complain of backaches, because when the jaw is out of alignment, it causes the neighboring muscles to exert extra effort. The muscles in the neck, shoulders and back work to correct the misalignment, and when these muscles tire, the surrounding areas can experience chronic pain.

    Neck Pain And Sciatica

Neck pain and sciatica seem like unrelated symptomatic expressions, since they are so far removed from one another anatomically. In some cases, there may be no relationship at all between these 2 coincidental expressions of suffering. However, in other instances, the 2 symptom sets may be sourced from the exact same causative process.

This article will explore the often mysterious relationship between 2 of the most prevalent of all dorsalgia concerns sciatica and neck pain. We will look at how these 2 pain syndromes might coexist without a common link, as well as why the expressions may also be tied to a single causative mechanism in the cervical spine.

Maintain Proper Posture And Body Mechanics

Top 3 Causes of Sciatic Nerve Pain: How to Tell What is Causing It.

Ensure your sitting position supports and comforts your lower back. Using a pillow or support for your lower back curve can improve posture and comfort while sitting, such as at your desk or while driving.

When you lift objects, maintain proper body mechanics. Keep your back straight and your legs spread, and only bend at the knees. Hold the load closer to your body and lift it with your leg muscles, not your back muscles. Avoid lifting something up and twisting your body simultaneously.

    Osteonecrosis Of The Femoral Head

This issue, known as ONFH, causes the hip bone to deteriorate and collapse due to a lack of blood to the area. The cartilage that covers the hip bones also deteriorates, resulting in arthritis.

Hip pain is typically the first symptom, and it may accompany a throbbing pain or dull ache in the buttocks and groin. As the condition progresses, it may be difficult to put weight on the hip and any movement may be painful.

This may progression can take several months to a year, and getting an early diagnosis leads to a better outlook.

Internal causes of hip and groin pain may stem from underlying conditions or growths in other regions of the body. The issue may be:

The Indirect Results Of Nerve Compression

Another reason you may be feeling pain in one of your hips is that when you have a pinched nerve in your back that affects one side of your lower body, you tend to favor that side. The pain may alter the way you move, which can place added stress on your already hard-working hips.

So, if your hip pain is more of a dull ache and youre also experiencing some of the more classic signs of sciatica, the two are likely related.

    Common Sciatica Cause #: Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is a disorder that most often affects the lumbar spine. It occurs when one vertebra slips forward over an adjacent vertebra. When the vertebra slips and is displaced, it presses on the nerves or nerve roots below it. This ultimately causes compression and often results in sciatica symptoms.

Youre either born with developmental spondylolisthesis or it develops during childhood. On the other hand, acquired spondylolisthesis can be caused by:

    • Parts of the spine breaking down over time
    • Physical stress from activities like weightlifting or gymnastics
    • Trauma, such as from a car accident

On physical examination, the patient will often complain of increased back pain when arching into extension due to irritation of the facet joints. The diagnosis can often be made with simple plain radiographssuch as an X-raydone in the standing posture, says Dr. Subach.
