If your pain starts in the back and moves or radiates towards the hip or down the leg and you have numbness, tingling or weakness in the leg, sciatica is the most likely cause.

Individuals with sciatica may find it difficult to walk, stand or sit in due to the pain and other neurological manifestations of sciatica such as weakness or numbness of the lower extremities.
The signs and symptoms listed above may manifest for a couple of weeks or may last for many years. However, it is essential to note that not everyone will experience the same sciatica symptoms because causes of sciatica may differ from one person to another.

What Are The Symptoms
Classic sciatic pain starts in the low back and buttocks. It affects one leg traveling down the back of the thigh, past the knee, and sometimes into the calf and foot. The pain feels worse in the leg than in the back. It may range from a mild ache to severe burning or a shooting pain. Numbness or tingling can occur in your leg and foot. This usually is not a concern unless you have weakness in your leg muscles or foot drop.
Sitting usually causes the most pain because of the weight this position puts onto the discs. Activities, such as bending or twisting, worsen the pain, whereas lying down tends to bring relief. Running or walking may actually feel better than sitting or standing for too long.
Seek medical help immediately if you have extreme leg weakness, numbness in the genital area, or loss of bladder or bowel function. These are signs of a condition called cauda equina syndrome.

Acute Herniated Disc Injury
Herniated disc or bulging disc are the common cause of the sudden onset of “sciatica.” As the lumbar disc content protrudes out of its usual place, it may press into the narrow canal where the nerves exit your spine, thus nerve compression. If the injured lumbar disc has tears and the fluid inner content leaks to the surrounding area, it may cause chemical irritation to the surrounding nerve root as well.
Is The Weight Of Pregnancy The Reason Why So Many Pregnant Women Get Sciatica
Its true that sciatica is common in pregnancy but increased weight is not the main reason why pregnant women get sciatica. A better explanation is that certain hormones of pregnancy cause a loosening of their ligaments. Ligaments hold the vertebrae together, protect the disks and keep the spine stable. Loosened ligaments can cause the spine to become unstable and might cause disks to slip, which leads to nerves being pinched and the development of sciatica. The babys weight and position can also add pressure to the nerve.
The good news is there are ways to ease sciatic pain during pregnancy, and the pain goes away after birth. Physical therapy and massage therapy, warm showers, heat, medications and other measures can help. If you are pregnant, be sure to follow good posture techniques during pregnancy to also ease your pain.

Prop Onto Your Elbows
While lying on your stomach, slowly prop yourself up onto your elbows. This maneuver should cause your low back to bend back slightly. Take a few deep breaths and try to relax in this position.
While propping on your elbows, again try to monitor your symptoms for any changes. A decrease in your symptoms or centralization of your pain is a good sign here.
If your low back pain or sciatica worsens in the propped up position, simply return to lying face down and relax for a few more minutes, and then try to prop up again. Sometimes the pain is simply too intense to get into the propped up position. If this is the case, wait a few hours and try again.
Remain in the propped up position for a few minutes, and then slowly return to the prone lying position. Repeat this cycle for three to five repetitions, and then move on to the next exercise.
Less Common Causes Of Hip Pain
Hip fracture: A hip fracture is a break in one of the bones of the hip joint. It is a serious injury that almost always requires surgical repair, followed by physical therapy rehab.
If you suspect you may have fractured your hip, you should seek immediate medical attention. Hip fracture symptoms include severe pain in the hip or groin, swelling, bruising, inability to put weight on the leg, and inability to walk or get up after a fall. You can reduce your risk of hip fracture by doing exercises to strengthen your hip bones and improve balance.
Inguinal hernia: An inguinal hernia is a protrusion of soft tissues, such as the intestines, through a weak spot in the abdominal wall.
Symptoms of an inguinal hernia include a bulge in the groin on the side of the pubic bone, which becomes more obvious with coughing, straining, bending, or lifting heavy objects.
People with inguinal hernias often report groin pain and discomfort. The groin pain is described as a burning and aching sensation.10 You can reduce your risk of developing an inguinal hernia by maintaining healthy body weight and doing specific exercises to strengthen the abdominal muscles.
Sciatica: The sciatic nerve is a large nerve of the lower limb. The term sciatica refers to pain in the path of the sciatic nerve as it makes its way from the lower back, through the hip to the leg, all the way down to the foot.11

When Sciatica Is Serious
Certain symptoms of sciatica may indicate a serious medical condition, such as cauda equina syndrome, infection, or spinal tumors. These symptoms may include, but are not limited to:
- Progressive neurological symptoms, such as leg weakness
- Symptoms in both legs
- Bowel and/or bladder dysfunction
- Sexual dysfunction
It is advised to seek medical attention immediately if such symptoms develop. Sciatica that occurs after an accident or trauma, or if it develops in tandem with other symptoms like fever or loss of appetite, is also cause for prompt medical evaluation.
