Can Neck Pain Be A Symptom Of Cancer

My Rare Cause of Neck Shoulder and Arm Pain

Sometimes persistent, continuing neck pain is a warning sign of head or neck cancer. Although it could also be a sign of another less serious condition, head and neck cancers might include a lump, swelling or a sore that doesnt heal. According to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, this is the most common symptom of cancer.

Other symptoms of neck or head cancer may include:

  • white or red patch on the lining of the mouth, gums, or tongue
  • unusual pain or bleeding in the mouth
  • difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • numbness in the head and neck region
  • swelling in the chin or jaw
  • pain when moving the jaw or tongue
  • unusual nasal discharge
  • pain in the upper teeth

Each of these symptoms can also be underlying causes of other conditions, so you shouldnt immediately expect cancer if you experience them.

If symptoms persist or increase in intensity, see your doctor, who can perform the proper tests to identify any underlying medical conditions.

The most common causes of head and neck cancer are excessive alcohol use and tobacco use, including smokeless tobacco. In fact, 75 percent of cases of head and neck cancers result from alcohol and tobacco.

Other causes and risk factors of head and neck cancer include:

  • poor oral hygiene

Pain Around The Upper Arm And Shoulder

This happens when the pain is localized predominantly in the area of your shoulder and upper part of your humerus. The conditions that cause this can include:

  • Rotator cuff disease: Initially, pain is often felt at the front of the shoulder.
  • Torn rotator cuff: Tears in the rotator cuff can include pain that begins near the shoulder.
  • Dislocated shoulder: Pain from a shoulder dislocation is most acutely felt near the shoulder.
  • Broken collarbone: The pain from a broken collarbone can be felt close to the shoulder, particularly when you try to move your arm.
  • Frozen shoulder: This type of pain typically comes on gradually and feels dull and deep.
  • Calcific tendinitis: Pain due to calcific tendinitis can be severe and can come on suddenly, often in the morning.
  • Shoulder sprain: You can feel pain from a shoulder sprain not only in your shoulder, but also in the area of your upper arm and collarbone.
  • The pain due to a separated shoulder is felt around the shoulder and upper arm.
  • Shoulder osteoarthritis and RA: People with arthritis in their shoulder often feel a deep ache in their shoulder and upper arm.
  • Brachial neuritis: Pain from brachial neuritis is typically severe and most often happens in the area of the shoulder and upper arm.
  • Brachial plexus injury: Pain from a brachial plexus injury can happen around the shoulder and upper arm. It may be long lasting.

Playing With Your Kids

Pin auf Massage Therapy

Playing with your kids can cause or exacerbate neck or shoulder pain. An afternoon of repeatedly bending down and picking up your child at the playground can cause muscle tension and joint strain that can lead to tightness and pain in your neck and shoulders. And if its been a while since youve played, shooting hoops with your 10-year-old can have the same consequences.

The following tips can help prepare you for pain-free play:

  • Lift your child properly. Stand close to your child before you attempt to lift. Bend at your knees, not at your waist. Squat down, tighten your stomach muscles and lift with your legs.
  • Get in shape. Strengthening your core, back and glutes and maintaining a healthy weight will prepare you for a vast range of physical activities, including the rigors of playing with kids.

Shoulder Pain Without Injury: 6 Common Causes

Joshua M. Zimmerman, M.D. contributes to topics such as Orthopedics.

Your shoulder is killing you, but you cant think of anything you did to make it hurt.

    I didnt fall.

I didnt get into a fight.

I didnt go all out at the gym.

Well, there are several conditions that cause discomfort but arent caused by a traumatic activity. How can you identify whats wrong and how to make your shoulder feel better?

Joshua Zimmerman, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon with Hackensack Meridian Health Medical Group, helps by sharing six of the most common causes of shoulder pain without injury that he sees in his patients regularly.

  • Rotator cuff tears: The same overuse that leads to tendonitis can lead to rotator cuff tears. Eventually the chronic inflammation and degeneration can cause the tendon to wear down and tear. The pain of a tear is more of an aching or throbbing discomfort that can interrupt sleep, Dr. Zimmerman notes.Physical therapy, anti-inflammatories and/or steroid injections can help treat rotator cuff tears. If symptoms are severe, surgery may be an option.

    How Is Brachial Neuritis Diagnosed

Your doctor will ask you about your condition and conduct an examination to look for painful or wasted muscles. Theyll also test your shoulder movement and strength. In some people, the shoulder blade on the affected side protrudes or stands out more than usual, and your doctor will check for this. They may also test your reflexes and skin sensation to check for any abnormalities.

Your doctor may order X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs of your neck and shoulder. The scans can help rule out other causes, such as a slipped disc or tumor, which could press on the nerves and cause similar symptoms.

Electrical testing may be performed to show whether individual nerves are functioning correctly. Your doctor may also use blood tests to look for any underlying illnesses.

Brachial neuritis can often be treated with a combination of medication and physical therapy. However, in rare cases, your doctor may say you need surgery.
