Can Swelling Behind The Ear Be Life

6 Common Causes of Ear Pain in Adults and Older Kids

Usually, swelling behind the ear is not life-threatening and may resolve on its own or with simple medications like antibiotics for an infection. Sometimes, however, swelling behind the ear can indicate a serious infection of the mastoid, the bone behind the ear. Infection of the mastoid, called mastoiditis, is dangerous because it can spread to the brain . If your swelling is associated with severe pain, high fever, headache and/or confusion, you should seek medical evaluation without delay.

Tennis Ball For Relieving Neck And Ear Pain

You can also relieve headaches that cause neck pain and pain behind your ear by using a couple of tennis balls. The effect of massaging the cervical spine with tennis balls helps to release tension at the back of your neck and treat a pounding headache.

This is what you should do:

  • Take a clean sock and put 2 tennis balls in it. Secure tightly.
  • You need to lie on your back with the top of your neck resting between the 2 tennis balls in the sock.
  • In a gentle motion, rock your head from side to side to help release tension.
  • Repeat step 3, but this time, move your head back and forth.
  • Repeat step 3 and 4 for a few minutes to help relax your neck muscles and ease pain at the back of your ear.
  • Treatments Your Physician May Prescribe

If appropriate, your doctor may prescribe over-the-counter medications described above. Decongestants can be particularly helpful in sinus headache. For more difficult allergies, medications that decrease secretion formation may be prescribed. Steroid nasal sprays can also be used effectively. For severe allergies, your doctor may refer you to an allergy specialist for other desensitizing therapies.Your doctor may order a CT or MRI scan of the sinuses to determine the extent of a bacterial infection, if present. If your doctor suspects a bacterial infection, he/she may prescribe antibiotics. Many sinus infections are caused by viruses that the body can effectively eliminate with time, which do not require antibiotics. Different agents designed to kill fungus or other organisms may be prescribed depending on your medical history. Additionally, some of the fluids draining from you sinus may be taken to identify the infection.Other headache syndromes, such as migraine or cluster headache, can mimic sinus headache. Your doctor will discuss these possibilities and advise you accordingly.

Doctors For Neck And Ear Pain In Singapore

    Pin on Health and Fitness

If you suffer with neck and ear pain do not despair. Many patients are finding relief in our Singapore Upper Cervical Chiropractic offices where our doctors specialise in detecting and correcting spinal Subluxations that occur at the base of the skull where the brainstem sits. Let us explain.

Your head weighs about 5 kilograms and rests on the top bone in the neck called the atlas that weighs 60 grams! This small bone and its two joints bear the weight of the entire head . As a result, it is an unstable junction of the spine and is susceptible to spinal injury, moreso than the rest of the neck or spine. Sudden movements or other acceleration deceleration injuries can damage the supporting soft tissue that give the head neck junction stability.

This results in spinal misalignment and nervous system irritation which leads to not only neck and ear pain but a plethora of other problems in the body. Because the upper cervical spine houses the brainstem if it becomes Subluxated it can have negative consequences on the entire body.

The brain stem is responsible for controlling all body functions that are not under our conscious control. Heart function, muscle tone regulation, respiratory function, blood pressure regulation, thermo regulation are all directly controlled by the brainstem. This vital center can result in a host of ailments that most would not relate to a neck injury, including neck and ear pain.

Ear pain is a known symptom of TMJ dysfunction.TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint: this joint connects the lower part of the jaw to the skull somewhere around the region of the ears

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is an umbrella term covering pain and dysfunction of the muscles of mastication and the temporomandibular joints .The most important feature is pain, followed by restricted mandibular movement, and noises from the temporomandibular joints during jaw movement. Although TMD is not life-threatening, it can be detrimental to quality of life, because the symptoms can become chronic and difficult to manage.Source: Wikipedia Temporomandibular joint dysfunction

      How Is The Neck Structured

Your neck and back are made up of small bones called vertebrae. These are stacked on top of each other to form the spinal column.

The spinal column supports your head and protects the spinal cord. This is the main structure which links the network of nerves throughout your body. Messages travel along this network sending sensations, such as pain, to your brain.

The top seven bones in the spinal column form your neck, and these are called the cervical vertebrae. The bones are linked together by facet joints. These are small joints between your vertebrae that, together with your neck muscles, allow you to move your head in any direction.

Between the vertebrae are discs of cartilage. The discs act as shock absorbers and give the spine its flexibility. A slipped disc occurs when one of these discs slips slightly out of its natural position in the spine.

        Stabbing Pain Behind Earlobe

If you have ever felt a sharp stinging pain in and around your earlobe, it is better you know it could be a sign of an underlying ailment. If the pain is accompanied by fever, it could be a serious ear infection. You may have to undergo several tests depending on the severity of the pain and how long you have had it. This is the only way to determine the underlying cause. It is also important to watch out for the accompanying symptoms that may be a sign of a serious infection. It is also important to get immediate medical attention. This will prevent the infection from spreading to other parts of the body. The fact that the ears are so close to the brain makes the sharp pain behind ear very dangerous.

        What Is Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is a rare condition that can cause sharp, stabbing, or shooting pain in the throat area near the tonsils, the back of the tongue or the middle ear.

The pain occurs along the pathway of the glossopharyngeal nerve, which is located deep in the neck. It serves the back of the tongue, throat and the parotid gland , the middle ear and eustachian tube.

Painful episodes are usually intermittent, lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes. The pain might recur several times in a day. In other cases it might not come back for several weeks or months.

Certain activities may trigger painful episodes, including:

        • Drinking cold liquids
        • Clearing the throat
        • Touching the gums

Sometimes people with this condition may avoid eating, drinking or chewing because they fear that these activities may trigger a painful attack. Over time, this can result in weight loss.

Generally, only one side of the head is affected by GPN. The glossopharyngeal nerve has several branches, including the tympanic branch that receives sensations from the middle ear and mastoid.

Another important branch is the carotid sinus nerve that serves the carotid body and carotid sinus . Painful attacks may result in life-threatening symptoms, such as fainting , slow heartbeat or arrhythmia . In very rare cases, cardiac arrest may occur with no painful episodes.
