Gabapentin Pregabalin And Back Pain: Fda Safety Alert

People with radiating chronic spine pain may be prescribed gabapentin or pregabalin to treat their nerve-related neck, back and/or leg pain. If youre taking either of these medications, please note: In December 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released a safety alert that gabapentin and pregabalin may increase the risk for serious breathing problems if youre also taking a central nervous system depressant or have respiratory problems. CNS depressants are drugs that include tranquilizers and sedatives.

I was supposed to have a ‘dynamic disc’ replacement at C6/7. Unfortunately during surgery the surgeon ripped the sheath off my C7 nerve root and the dura off my spinal cord. I have been left in truly terrible neuropathic pain. This is the only drug that has had any affect at all. The dose is 300mg/day. It helps with the horrible ‘burning’ sensation in my left arm by ‘deadening’ the skin. Unfortunately the ‘deadening’ of the skin is not confined to only my left arm! I have given Lyrica only 2 stars for tolerability because the side affects have been horrible. I have gained weight and I am able to deal with the ‘ringing’ in the ears and the bright flashing lights in front of my eyes but it is very difficult to deal with a brain that has gone ‘walkabout.’ I tutor undergraduate level mathematics and hate having a ‘wooly’ brain. However, Lyrica was easy to take and as said above was the ONLY drug to help with the pain.

What Is Lyrica What Is Gabapentin How Do They Work

Gabapentin is an anti-seizure drug that is used for preventing seizures and for treating post-herpetic neuralgia, the pain that follows an episode of shingles. Doctors do not know how gabapentin works. Gabapentin structurally resembles the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid . It is possible that this similarity is related to gabapentin’s mechanism of action. In animal models used for testing the anticonvulsant and analgesic activities of drugs, gabapentin prevents seizures and reduces pain-related responses.

Lyrica is an oral medication that is chemically related to gabapentin . It is used for treating pain caused by neurologic diseases such as postherpetic neuralgia as well as seizures. It also is used for treating fibromyalgia.

Types Of Pain: Nociceptive Vs Neuropathic

    • Neuropathic ;pain;comes from the nerves that transmit pain signals from the body to the brain. People describe the pain as burning, stinging, or shooting. It may radiate from one area of the body to another. It may be accompanied by numbness and tingling.

Where Gabapentin And Pregabalin Fit In The Spine Pain Treatment Plan

The FDA has approved gabapentin and pregabalin for several conditions, from seizures and restless leg syndrome to diabetes and fibromyalgia. Although not specifically approved to treat chronic back and neck pain, your doctor may also prescribe these drugs if you have nerve-related spine pain.

Gabapentin and pregabalin, which are sometimes called gabapentinoids, belong to a class of prescription drugs called anticonvulsants, which is why they are often prescribed for seizure management. These medications also have neuropathic propertiesthat is, they treat nerve pain.

If you experience chronic nerve pain in your spine, it might feel like weakness, shooting pain, burning, and/or tingling throughout your back and neck. Sometimes pain radiates into an extremity, such as an arm or leg . Gabapentinoids can help ease those sensory symptoms in some people. Gabapentin may even be prescribed to treat nerve pain after spinal cord injury.

Pregabalin For Chronic Neuropathic Pain In Adults

    Bottom line

Moderate-quality evidence shows that oral pregabalin at doses of 300 mg or 600 mg daily has an important effect on pain in some people with moderate or severe neuropathic pain after shingles, or due to diabetes. Low-quality evidence suggests that oral pregabalin is effective after trauma due to stroke or spinal cord injury. Pregabalin appears not to be effective in neuropathic pain associated with HIV. Very limited evidence is available for neuropathic back pain, neuropathic cancer pain, and some other forms of neuropathic pain.

Neuropathic pain comes from damage to the nervous system. It is different from pain messages that are carried along healthy nerves from damaged tissue . Neuropathic pain is often treated by different medicines from those used for pain from damaged tissue, which we often think of as painkillers. Medicines that are sometimes used to treat depression or epilepsy can be effective in some people with neuropathic pain. One of these is pregabalin. Our definition of a good result was a high level of pain relief and ability to keep taking the medicine without side effects making people stop.

    Study characteristics

    Key results

Pregabalin is helpful for some people with chronic neuropathic pain. It is not possible to know beforehand who will benefit and who will not. Current knowledge suggests that a short course of treatment is the best way of telling.
