Could I Have The Symptoms Of Early Pregnancy And Not Be Pregnant

Many of the symptoms of early pregnancy overlap with other medical conditions, as well as your typical menstrual cycle. Premenstrual symptoms can be very similar to pregnancy symptoms. This can make it difficult to tell the difference. You can also miss a period without being pregnant. This can happen when you exercise in extreme amounts, lose or gain a lot of weight, or even are stressed. Breastfeeding can also cause your period to stop for a while.

The best way to know youre pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. If you have missed a period and think theres a chance you could be pregnant, consider taking a test.

Case & Commentarypart 1

A 34-year-old woman who was 14 weeks pregnant presented to the emergency department with 5 days of nonspecific abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. On examination, she appeared well with normal vital signs and had some mild diffuse abdominal tenderness. Her white blood cell count was 19,000 cells/L, and a urinalysis was positive for nitrates and leukocyte esterase . She was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and was discharged on antibiotic therapy. No imaging was performed at this initial visit.

The patient returned the following day with unchanged abdominal pain and more nausea and vomiting. A fetal ultrasound was performed and found normal fetal heart activity. No further testing was done, and she was discharged home with instructions to continue the antibiotics.

Abdominal pain remains the most common reason for emergency department visits, comprising more than 11% of all visits in 2008. In 2011, 54% of patients that presented to the ED were female, more than 25% were of childbearing age, and the pregnancy rate in the United States is approximately 10% at any given time. For these reasons, clinicians that evaluate patients with abdominal pain in the ED should be familiar with common causes of abdominal pain in pregnant women and appreciate when nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is abnormal.

After you conceive, your progesterone levels rise and hence you start feeling gastric often. This happens because your gastrointestinal tract slows down and that makes food travel more slowly. Pain In Lower Abdomen During Pregnancy First Trimester

In the first trimester, lower abdominal pain can have different forms: dull, intense, with cramps or tightness, or acute. The diagnosis can be oriented depending on the kind of pain you experience.

Generally, such pain feels like cramps similar to those seen before periods. Many pregnant women also notice painful pressure or pulling under their umbilicus, this usually happens about a week after conception and lasts a few weeks.

Often, these pains are not pathological and may occur on either side of the lower abdomen. They are mainly related to ligament disorders caused by increased uterus volume.

But no stress: The majority of these symptoms are normal and can be explained by ordinary changes that arise in early pregnancy. A little rest and relaxation usually helped to ease and eliminate the discomforts.

Early Pregnancy Signs: Cramping And Lower Abdominal Pain

Abdominal Cramps a Sign of Pregnancy – Cramping During Early Pregnancy

There are many symptoms that can potentially indicate pregnancy even before, and only just after, a woman has missed her period. Early pregnancy signs typically include nausea , extreme fatigue, a heightened sense of taste and smell, and the need to urinate more frequently.

Cramping and lower abdominal pain are also frequent early pregnancy symptoms. In fact, for some women, pulling or stretching sensations in the lower abdomen or pelvis are among the first indications that they may be expecting a baby. These cramps can bring good news, then, but they can also be a source of anxiety for many women.

For those women who are looking for a fool-proof way to distinguish early pregnancy cramping from regular period cramping, I am sorry to say that there is none.

Period cramps and early pregnancy cramps feel the same. The only difference between the two is that period cramps tend to stop when you actually get your period or if they don’t, they are at least accompanied by the tell-tale bleeding that tells you you are menstruating.

Early pregnancy cramps, on the other hand, sometimes don’t stop for a few weeks. They are also characterized by the lack of a menstrual period. Women who are also experiencing other unusual symptoms that could signal a pregnancy may be able make a more informed guess. But then, many such symptoms, like mood swings and tender breasts, are also common pre-menstrual complaints for some ladies.

Vulva Change In Colour

One of the early signs and symptoms of pregnancy can be a change in colour of your vulva and vagina. Your vulva and vagina are usually pink, but this changes to dark purplish-red as your pregnancy progresses. This happens because more blood is needed in that area to build the tissue, a change which midwives refer to as Chadwicks sign.

What else could it be?All of the maintenance we perform on our vaginas can contribute to a change in colour. If you have been using razors or hair removal creams you could be suffering from reddening or a rash. Also, watch out for washing products that arent sensitive to the hormone balance as this can have an effect too. Look for gentle products to prevent irritation to your vagina.

Cramping In Late Pregnancy

Cramping in the second or third trimester could be harmless or concerningit depends on the situation.

  • Preterm labor: Cramps occurring at regular intervals may indicate preterm labor. More than six cramps or contractions in 1 hour, a change in vaginal discharge such as bright red vaginal bleeding, a sudden gush of clear fluid, a low, dull backache, or intense pelvic pressure are all possible signs. For any of these symptoms, call your doctor immediately.
  • Round ligament pain: You may experience shooting pains in the lower abdomen or around your hips due to a phenomenon called round ligament pain, which occurs as your body accommodates your growing uterus. These types of pains are normal and will pass, but you should discuss them with your doctor.

Are Cramps In Pregnancy Normal

Its completely understandable to worry about stomach pain in pregnancy and be anxious about this being a sign of miscarriage. But stomach pains or cramps are common in pregnancy and usually nothing to worry about.

Mild stomach pain in early pregnancy is usually caused by your womb expanding, the ligaments stretching as your bump grows, hormones constipation or trapped wind. It may sometimes feel like a stitch or mild period pain. Its is probably nothing to worry about if the pain is mild and goes away when you change position, have a rest, do a poo or pass wind.

You may also feel light period-like discomfort or cramps at the end of your pregnancy. This is nothing to worry about, but call your midwife if you have any concerns.

Pregnancy Bleeding And Swollen Gums

Pain In Right Side During Pregnancy First Trimester ...

You may not have expected pregnancy to affect your mouth. But your blood circulation and hormone levels can make your gums tender and swollen, and you may notice they bleed more easily. You may also develop nose bleeds.

Recommendations:

  • Get a dental checkup early in your pregnancy to make sure your teeth and mouth are healthy. See your dentist if you notice a particular problem.
  • Brush your teeth, floss regularly and rinse daily with an antiseptic mouthwash.

Upper Abdomen Or Stomach Pain In Pregnancy

Upper abdomen pain under the ribs is common in later pregnancy because of the growing baby and the uterus pushing up under the ribs. But, if this pain is persistent or severe, especially on the right side, it could be a sign of preeclampsia . Other symptoms of preeclampsia may include:

  • A sudden increase in swelling in the face, hands or feet
  • Severely bad headache or a dull headache that does not go away
  • Problems with vision, like blurred vision or seeing flashing lights
  • Nausea or vomiting

Pre-eclampsia mostly develops around 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Early Warning Signs And Symptoms Of Pregnancy

The signs and symptoms of pregnancy differ from woman to woman. All the signs of pregnancy may not be seen in one person. Additionally, the signs may appear in different persons at different times. Below are a few common signs and symptoms that may indicate early pregnancy:

  • Missed menstrual cycle: It is the most common symptom of early pregnancy. If a woman has missed her period by a week or more, there is a chance that she might be pregnant. However, this symptom can be misleading if the menstrual cycle is irregular.
  • Spotting: Blood or spotting on the panty prior to the monthly date is one of the early symptoms of pregnancy. About a week after conception, the embryo pushes itself into the wall of the uterus . This causes some light bleeding or spots of blood to appear on the panty.
  • Vaginal discharge: Some women experience a thick, milky discharge from the vagina in early pregnancy. It is not associated with itching and foul odor.
  • Vulva changes: Chadwicks sign is one of the early signs and symptoms of pregnancy. The vulva and vagina turn bluish in color. This happens because more blood is needed in that area to build the tissue for pregnancy.
  • Nausea with or without vomiting: Morning sickness, which may strike at any time of the day or night, often begins about four weeks after a woman becomes pregnant. Some women feel nausea earlier and some never experience it. Research emphasizes that pregnancy hormones may play a role in this symptom.

Are Cramps Normal During Early Pregnancy

Stomach cramps during early pregnancy are relatively common. If you get a few stomach cramps during the first trimester of pregnancy, its probably not a cause for alarm. These cramps are typically part of the normal physical changes in the body that occur in preparation for the baby.

Very early in your pregnancy, you may get cramps as well as light bleeding when the embryo is implanted into the wall of the uterus. This process can sometimes lead to implantation cramps and bleeding. As the pregnancy progresses, you may also feel cramping as your uterus changes and stretches to accommodate the baby.

In the following sections, we will talk about the causes of pregnancy cramps and when to call your health care provider.

Left Lower Quadrant Pain In Later Pregnancy

Early pregnancy symptoms and signs: Lower abdominal pain that comes and goes

Pelvic girdle pain affects the joint connecting the two bones at the front of your pelvis, called the symphysis pubis. This joint becomes loosened during pregnancy, often as early as 14 weeks into pregnancy. The pain can be severe and is usually felt over the symphysis pubis, but can spread to the right lower quadrant.

Find out more from the separate leaflet called Common Problems in Pregnancy.

In later pregnancy, LLQ pain can be caused by a placental abruption or by going into labour. Placental abruption happens when there is bleeding between the afterbirth and the lining of the womb. Labour is too soon if it happens before 37 weeks.

See the separate leaflets called Premature Labour and Pelvic Pain in Women for more information.

How To Tell The Difference Between Menstrual Cramping And Implantation Cramping

Dr. Linda Burke-Galloway, MD says, “The character and intensity of pain in “period cramps” and “pregnancy cramps” are very similar, but the timing of pain might provide clues.” Period cramps, otherwise known as primary dysmenorrhea, occur 24-48 hours before your period and go away once menstruation starts. They can range from mild to severe, depending on the level of prostaglandinsa hormone-like substance that triggers uterine muscle contractions. In contrast, implantation cramping occurs 2-7 days before your period and starts off very mild. You will only feel it intermittently in your lower stomach or lower back.

Cramps Before Your Period Vs Implantation Cramps

health girl: Being pregnant symptoms Week through Week

If you’re having cramps a week before your period when you usually only start having cramps a few days before, then you may be experiencing implantation cramping. Implantation is when the fertilized egg implants itself into the lining of the uterus. After ovulation, it takes about a week for the fertilized egg to enter the uterus and burrow its way into the thick, rich lining, which can cause mild pain. Typically this happens about a week before youd expect your period , so it might seem odd. It can also happen close to the time youd expect your period, so some women confuse it with their normal menstrual cramps. But, if you experience these cramps a week before your period is due, and that is abnormal for you, you may very well be expecting!
