While there is little or no sensation involved with the detecting of electrical activity, the insertion of the needle itself into the muscle may cause discomfort but generally not more so than if you were receiving a shot or giving blood. The neurologist only performs one insertion at a time, and you receive advance warning and guidance for minimizing the discomfort while its happening. This is too funny because I have had both an EMG and NCS over 2 and a half years ago and it wasn’t awful, yet not pleasant. The needles in muscles are a little tough. Now here I am after the fact with a diagnosis of SFPN and more pain, and going for 2nd round of testing to rule out further advancements. Ughhcontemplation. I’m between do I or dont I? Scheduled for July 10th with a 2nd neurologist opinion the 14th. I’m feeling ckickenish too but, am going to make it happen. You/re going there for a reason, that’s what you should keep in mind.Tell them you have anxiety for this procedure and they may prescribe one anxiety pill for you for that appointment as long as you bring a driver with you. I had it done, it’s not so bad .

I had an EMG several years ago. Mine was not for neuropathy. It’s a valuable tool for your Dr. to be able to proceed with your treatment. Sometimes we have to go through difficult part to get to the answer. Don’t be uptight. Just relax. The tech will guide you through it. I am facing one in July for neuropathy.

Are There Any Reasons I Should Not Have An Edx Study

If you are on blood thinning medications, such as aspirin, plavix, heparin or warfarin , the physician may not perform certain portions of the test. If that information is absolutely necessary, you may be asked to stop blood thinning medication prior to the electrodiagnostic test. It depends on how sensitive a person is to pain, and in the case of an EMG test, the pain can come from two sources: an electric shock delivered by the doctor, and needle pricks, which can take the form of an embedded needle that the doctor maneuvers around while its beneath the skin.

I sat in on my mothers EMG test for her suspected pronator teres syndrome.

The doctor had warned her the day before, It will be unpleasant. The needles are a little thicker than acupuncture needles, said the doctor.

An electric shock is always an unpleasant experience, and there will be times that the doctor will increase the voltage.

I was watching my mothers face while he applied the shock with a cell-phone-sized device that hed press a button on for a split second.

She was lying on her back, eyes closed, while he worked on her arms. Her eyes would mildly flinch, and sometimes flinched more noticeably. Sometimes her face twitched from the discomfort.

However, in my mothers case, most of the hurt from the EMG came from the needles.

The doctor would place a needle on her skin, then tap the top of it. At one point he embedded a needle about a quarter inch into her skin on the underside of the palm, and moved it around.

The most painful needle prick was when it was applied to my mothers left palm, even though the doctor had tested her right palm first. She let out a good yalp when this happened.

Id imagine that if they were concentrated on the upper legs, they wouldnt hurt as bad.

Some of our tests do involve using a very small needle. This needle is placed gently into specific muscle groups, depending on the problem we are investigating. It is important to note that not all of our studies require needle EMG. Whether or not you will need needle EMG depends on what your doctor has asked us to investigate. The needle used in our test is probably the smallest needle you will ever get.

The needle acts like a microphone and picks up the electrical activity in your muscle, which can then be evaluated to see if there are any abnormalities. Our needles, in addition to being very small, do not inject anything, nor do they take any samples from your muscles, they just “listen” to your muscle.

What Do The Results Mean


If your results were not normal, it can indicate a variety of different conditions. Depending on which muscles or nerves are affected, it may mean one of the following:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition that affects nerves in the hand and arm. It’s usually not serious, but can be painful.
  • Herniated disc, a condition that happens when a part of your spine, called a disc, is damaged. This puts pressure on the spine, causing pain and numbness
  • , an autoimmune disorder that affects the nerves. It can lead to numbness, tingling, and paralysis. Most people recover from the disorder after treatment
  • Myasthenia gravis, a rare disorder that causes muscle fatigue and weakness.
  • Muscular dystrophy, an inherited disease that seriously affects muscle structure and function.
  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, an inherited disorder that causes nerve damage, mostly in the arms and legs.
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis , also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. This is a progressive, ultimately fatal, disorder that attacks nerve cells in your brain and spinal cord. It affects all the muscles you use to move, speak, eat, and breathe.

How An Emg Works

The motor neurons in your body produce electrical signals, and the muscles contract in response. An EMG will be able to detect your bodys neuromuscular response to stimulation. During the test, you will be asked to contract your muscles through certain movements.

An EMG may be done by inserting tiny electrodes through your skin into the muscle. These electrodes will then provide information to an oscilloscope, which records your neuromuscular electrical activity as waves, graphs, or sounds on the monitor.
