How To Tape A Knee For Stability And Support

The Knee Taping Process

If youre experiencing general achiness and pain in your knee, try this taping technique:

  • Bend your knee at a 90-degree angle.
  • Put the end of a piece of tape on the bottom middle of your knee. Pull the piece up and over the middle of your kneecap towards your thigh. The tape should reach the top of your knee.
  • Split this portion of tape starting at the top of your kneecap. Extend the split to just below your kneecap.
  • Move the right-hand section of the V split to run along the outside edge of your kneecap. Rub it into place.
  • Take the other section of tape and create a wider V by securing it along the inside of your kneecap.
  • Take a second piece of tape thats the same length. Place it vertically in the middle of your knee between the first two pieces of split tape.
  • Split this second piece of tape from the bottom of your knee up this time. This creates another V. Secure the outer section of the V to the edge of your kneecap. Cross it over the tape thats there.
  • Repeat this with the second split portion on the other side of your knee.
  • Straighten out your knee. Youll find your kneecap poking through a diamond shape the tape created. The tape should crinkle up just a bit. That means youve applied the correct pressure.
  • The tape can stay on for three to five days, even during showering. However, try not to become reliant on the tape. Talk to your provider if you find you need to use the tape for weeks at a time.

    Kinesiology Taping For Kneecap Support

    Another taping technique used for patellar tendinopathy is achieved with Kinesiology tape . This method of patellar strapping aims to reduce the strain on the patellar tendon, provide overall knee stability, and help with patellar tracking.  

  • Sit with the knee positioned at a 90º angle or less. Using a strip of KT tape, anchor one end under the inner kneecap, wrap it under the kneecap, and up along the outer side. Secure the end to the outer thigh. To achieve a 10% stretch, use the top hand to pull tape in the proper direction and the bottom hand to push the tape up smoothly as its applied.
  • Following a similar application technique, anchor one end of another strip of KT tape under the outer side of the kneecap, wrap it along the bottom edge, and up the inner edge of the kneecap. Secure the end of the tape to the inner thigh. 
  • Stretch a third piece shorter to its full extent and place it under the kneecap on the patellar tendon, starting with the middle first. Once the middle portion is secured, the end of the tape can be smoothed over gently and without tension.

  • 1Wet the tape with baby or vegetable oil for 5-10 minutes. Prior to removing the tape from your skin, you can loosen it by dampening the tape with baby oil or vegetable oil.
