According to the Orthopaedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association, there are four main types of conservatively managed neck pain:
- Neck pain with mobility deficits: This is a stiff neck a person experiences after straining the neck muscles when sleeping in the wrong position or lifting heavy weights.
- Neck pain with movement coordination impairments: This includes whiplash and neck pain that occurs after a person has been sitting at a desk in the wrong position for too long.

- Neck pain with radiating pain: This includes neck pain due to spinal stenosis, a slipped â or herniated â cervical disc, or cervical nerve compression.

When It Might Not Be For You
If you have other health problems, talk to your doctor before taking ibuprofen.
The FDA warns that using NSAIDs increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes, as early as the first weeks of starting. Ask your doctor if Motrin or ibuprofen is right for you, and at which dosage. If it is not a good choice given your condition, perhaps your doctor can suggest a suitable substitute for pain management. The longer you take Motrin, the greater will be your risk for cardiovascular events.
Speak to your doctor about taking Motrin on the day of any type of surgery, including when you are having dental work.
Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs also increase the risk;of ulcers,;bleeding in the stomach, and related GI problems. These known side effects can have very serious consequences, including death. They can occur at any time when taking Motrin and may show up without a previous warning. Side-to-Side Neck Tilt. From the same starting position, tilt you neck toward one shoulder, leading with your ear. Hold for 5 seconds and then return to the starting position. Do this five times on each side.
Neck Turn. Look straight ahead, then turn your head to one side, keeping your chin at the same level. Do this five times on each side.
Neck Stretch. Holding the rest of your body straight, push your chin forward, stretching your throat. Hold for 5 seconds. From the same starting position, push your chin backward and hold for 5 seconds. Do the forward and backward stretch five times each.
If any of these exercises cause severe pain or weakness in your hands or arms, stop right away and talk with your doctor.

“The most common causes of neck pain are either postural or positional. First Steps To Relieve Neck Pain
The causes of routine strain-and-sprain neck pain vary. If you wake up with a “crick” in your neck, it’s probably the sharp muscle contractions known as spasms, caused by a muscle strain. A sprain, in contrast, happens in ligamentsthe tough tissues that connect bones together. Alternatively, a tendonthe tissue that attaches muscles to bonesmay become inflamed, causing tendinitis. Basic self-help takes care of most routine neck pain flare-ups:
- Use cold to numb the early acute pain and reduce inflammation.
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers to control mild to moderate pain. These include acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen , naproxen , or aspirin.
- Use a neck collar for short periods to rest the painful muscles and tissues and ease your discomfort. “Collars have a bad reputation from people overusing them and getting weak muscles, but used a few hours here and there they can be very useful,” Dr. Shmerling says.
- Apply heateither with a heating pad or by using a warm whirlpool bath if one is availableafter a day or two, once the acute pain calms down.
Should you go to a chiropractor to get your neck “cracked”? Dr. Shmerling counsels against sudden, strenuous manipulation of the neck. “It may be fine for low back pain, but avoid it for neck pain,” he says.
How Can You Get A Neck Pain Diagnosis
Neck pain is most often diagnosed by a primary care provider. The most important aspect of treatment is to try to identify the underlying cause of the pain, as this will direct the treatment, explains Dr. Bonte.
For example, if the cause is due to a muscle imbalance or poor ergonomics , it is important to address these underlying issues when thinking through the overall treatment plan.

- Ask for your medical history
- Ask questions to determine the source of your pain, including:
- When did the pain start?
- What activities preceded the pain?
- What have you tried to relieve the neck pain?
- Does the pain radiate or travel into other body parts?
