Release Your Natural Pain Killers With Massage
Massages can help you feel relaxed, release endorphins , improve blood circulation, and soothe sore spinal muscles.
- A deep tissue massage can help restore the spineâs range of motion, improving its flexibility.
- Manual therapy, a special form of medical massage, can help knead out knots, trigger points, or tension in the muscles.4
There are many forms of massage that can be beneficial, such as myofascial release and Shiatsu .5
These massages may be more effective in relieving sciatica pain from poor posture, muscle strain, or fatigued musculature in the lower spine.
Maintain Good Posture During The Day
A common trigger of back pain and sciatica is incorrect posture and lifting heavy weights during the day because it stresses the lower back and can put pressure on the sciatic nerve.
If the posture is not corrected, the condition will only worsen.
Examples of harmful incorrect postures include:
- Lifting a heavy weight by bending at the lower back.
- Leaning forward into the computer while working.
- Standing with your body weight shifted on one leg.
- Lying on your stomach while reading.
How to Correct Your Posture
Incorrect posture puts stress on the spine and damages the bones, muscles, and vertebral discs.
If bad posture is corrected, most of the problems can be solved.
I have compiled a list of easy-to-follow tips to help you correct your posture:
- Keep your back, shoulders, and head straight and level while walking.
- When you are working at a desk, it is very important to keep your back straight.
- Place a pillow or towel behind your lower back when sitting.
- Avoid weights that are too heavy.
- If it is necessary to lift a heavy object, then you should hold it close to your body and maintain a straight posture bend at the knees rather than the waist.
- Do not wear high heels.
- Avoid standing in the same position for too long.
Exercise #5: The Hip Hinge
Do 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps
How to do it: Stand with your feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, and hands on hips. Brace your coreimagine youre about to get punched in the stomach and tighten those abdominal muscles.
Without changing the position of your knees, bend at your hips and lower your torso until its almost parallel to the floor, or as far as you can comfortably go without rounding your lower back.
Pause, then gently pull / lift your torso back to the starting position. Be sure to squeeze your glutes and push your hips forward to lift your torso back to the original position. This ensures youre engaging your hip muscles instead of relying on your lower back.
Thats one rep. Do three sets of 10 to 12 reps, resting for 30 to 60 seconds between sets.

Note: Piriformis Syndrome Feels Like Sciatica But It Isnt
There is a muscle where the thigh bone meets the buttocks called the piriformis. When this muscle becomes tight, it can irritate the sciatic nerve, causing similar pain, but this isnt truly sciatica, where the nerve is compressed.
Why does this matter? The treatments for piriformis syndrome and sciatica are different. Your chiropractor will be able to diagnose what the root cause is and whether or not you have sciatica.
Use A Supportive Car Seat Wedge Cushion
To reduce sciatic pain while driving, you can use a supportive wedge cushions to help alleviate pressure on your sciatic nerve. Supportive cushions have a broad spectrum of benefits that help reduce pain.

Various studies have confirmed the beneficial effect of a warm bath on the onset of sleep.
Please remember that using water that is too hot can have the opposite effect as it can burn the skin .
How To Avoid Sciatica In The First Place
Double board-certified in pain medicine and anesthesiology,;Dr. Phillip Lim;advises patients in his offices in Orange County and Downtown Los Angeles, California, to practice certain techniques to reduce the risk for sciatic nerve pain, such as:
- Practice good posture while standing, sitting, and even sleeping to minimize pressure on your lower backpressure.
- Lose weight, if overweight, to lighten the pressure on your nerve.
- Stop smoking, which can advance disc problems.
- Avoid sitting for long stretches of time.
- Lift with bent legs and straight back.
In addition, be sure to get enough;Vitamin B12, which helps synthesize the myelin sheath;surrounding your nerves.

Walk In A Swimming Pool
Water therapy exercises or even simply walking in waist-deep water can help improve nerve and muscle function in the lower body. The natural buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, thermodynamics, hydrodynamic forces, and viscosity of water helps regulate the functioning of nerves and muscles, letting you exercise with less pain.7
Exercise And Physical Therapy
Moving is usually the last thing people dogged by sciatica want to do, but its important to be physically active. Lying in bed makes it more likely that the pain will last longer, says Ruppert. Exercise increases blood flow to the disk and the nerve, helping to get rid of the chemicals causing the inflammation. Take 15- to 20-minute walks. If that hurts too much, give swimming or water aerobics a try; theres not as much pressure on the back when youre in the water, says Ruppert. It may also be worth seeing a physical therapist, who can prescribe stretching exercises to restore flexibility to the back or moves that strengthen core muscles, helping to stabilize the spine and reduce the likelihood of a similar injury.

Increase Hip And Hamstring Flexibility
Stiff hamstrings, glutes, and hips can alter your posture and increase the stress on your lower back, which may contribute to sciatica. Most types of sciatica will benefit significantly from a stretching routine that targets the hips and hamstrings and relieves an overused or inflamed piriformis muscle. The piriformis is a small muscle that attaches at the base of the spine and runs just above the sciatic nerve. Prolonged inactivity or sitting compresses the piriformis over the sciatic nerve, which can lead to aggravation and pain. Reverse the effects of tight hips and hamstrings by adopting a simple stretching routine or incorporating yoga into your overall fitness regimen.
Here are two ways to stretch your piriformis muscle and relieve pain.
What Are The Symptoms Of Sciatica
Common symptoms that the sciatic nerve is being compressed include:
- Shooting pain from the back, through the buttock, and down the back of the leg on either side
- A tingling or pins and needles feeling in the toes and/or feet
- Numbness in the buttock or down the affected leg
- Difficulty walking
- Hip pain
- A burning sensation in the lower back
Sitting for more than a few minutes and then standing usually brings on very intense sciatica nerve pain.

Recognizing When Surgery May Be Needed
When sciatic nerve pain doesnt respond to these treatments or symptoms continue to progress, surgery may be considered. The type of surgery will depend on whats causing the pain to begin with. If its a herniated disc in the back, a microdiscectomy may be needed to clear out the disc material thats pressing on the nerve root. If its caused by spinal stenosis, a procedure called a laminectomy can remove part of the vertebra to make more room for the sciatic nerve. Surgery is generally very successful and at DISC is performed as a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. At DISC Sports & Spine Center, we discuss the risks and benefits of any surgical procedure with patients so they can make an informed decision.;
Its important to point out that, although its usually perfectly OK to give sciatic pain some time to try and resolve on its own, there are a few situations in which it should be treated more urgently. Some examples include loss of bladder or bowel control and a fever occurring in conjunction with the pain. If at any point theres a question or concern,; patients are encouraged to reach out, knowing that we are always here to help. As each person is different, we encourage you schedule a time to come in to get a personalized recommendation.

Lumbago Quadratus Lumborum Stretch
Are you leaning away from the pain, leaning to one side keeping unnatural spine position? If yes lets correct that list with quadratus lumborum stretch.
If you are not experiencing this then move to next step, extension of the lower back.
To correct the list with quadratus lumborum stretch this is what I did and hopefully it will help you too. Keep your feet together and stand parallel to the wall with shoulder against the wall. Feet should be at comfortable distance from the wall and not too far initially. Now you slowly and gently press your trunk towards the wall only as far as you can go while contracting your abs and glutes. Over correcting here is a good thing. See illustrations above for more explanation.

What Are The Causes Of Sciatica
Sciatic nerve pain is caused by a variety of lower back conditions, including the following:
- Herniated disc:;When lumbar disc herniation presses directly on the sciatic nerve, it can lead to inflammation or irritation of the nerve. This issue is also known as radiculopathy a feeling of numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs.
- Spinal stenosis:;This problem occurs in older adults. Spinal stenosis is a type of nerve compression disorder. It leads to leg pain during walking or standing.
- Spondylolisthesis:;This disorder affects the lower part of the back. It occurs when a vertebra slips forward over another vertebra adjacent to it.
- Trauma:;Trauma from injuries sustained during sports, motor vehicle accidents or falling can cause nerve compression, especially when there are fragments of broken spinal bones.

Listen to your body, and dont try to push through anything that doesnt feel right for you, Jones says. Exercising through pain will result in worsening symptoms. Itll also likely throw off your form, which will raise your risk of exercise-related injury.
Rather than pushing through, its important to figure out what motions improve your pain and do more of that, and what motions worsen your pain, so you can temporarily avoid those, he says.
Over time, after your symptoms subside from doing sciatica exercises, you may be able to gradually add back in those previously irksome movements without pain.
To aid your quest for sciatic nerve pain relief, we asked Jones for his favorite stretches and exercises that most commonly ease sciatica. All or some may work for you. Try them out, performing any winners at least twice per week and as often as every day.

How Is Sciatica Treated
The goal of treatment is to decrease your pain and increase your mobility. Depending on the cause, many cases of sciatica go away over time with some simple self-care treatments.
Self-care treatments include:
- Appling ice and/or hot packs: First, use ice packs to reduce pain and swelling. Apply ice packs or bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel to the affected area. Apply for 20 minutes, several times a day. Switch to a hot pack or a heating pad after the first several days. Apply for 20 minutes at a time. If youre still in pain, switch between hot and cold packs whichever best relieves your discomfort.
- Taking over-the-counter medicines: Take medicines to reduce pain, inflammation and swelling. The many common over-the-counter medicines in this category, called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , include aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen . Be watchful if you choose to take aspirin. Aspirin can cause ulcers and bleeding in some people. If youre unable to take NSAIDS, acetaminophen may be taken instead.
- Performing gentle stretches: Learn proper stretches from an instructor with experience with low back pain. Work up to other general strengthening, core muscle strengthening and aerobic exercises.
Why Is This Happening
As we mentioned earlier, sciatica is a symptom and not an actual health condition. Sciatica simply means that the sciatic nerve is being compressed or irritated in some way, resulting in pain. The root cause of sciatic pain needs to be diagnosed by a professional, such as a chiropractor. Some of the more common causes of sciatic pain include:
- Lumbar disc herniation
- Isthmic spondylolisthesis
- Spinal tumor
There are other possible causes, but those are rare. Before your sciatic pain can be relieved, the root cause needs to be determined and addressed.
