How To Soothe Neck Pain

Don't Miss

Forward And Backward Tilting

How to relieve neck pain
  • It can be done when you are sitting or standing. Keep the moves smooth and slow.

  • Start with the head squarely over the shoulder region and the back in a straight manner.

  • Lower the chin toward the chest and then keep holding for half a minute. Relax, and then lift your head back up slowly.

  • Tilt the chin up towards the ceiling and bring the skull base towards the back. Now, hold for 10 seconds and return to the initial position.

  • Repeat the process several times on a daily basis.

Adjusting Your Posture To Prevent Neck And Shoulder Pain

It might not be obvious, but posture has a cascading effect on other parts of the body. Paying attention to your core strength and lower back can ease strain on your neck and shoulders.

Take the wall test to adjust your standing posture.

  • Stand with your head, shoulder blades, and buttocks touching the wall
  • Keep your heels around 2 to 4 inches away from the wall
  • Put your hand behind the curve in your back and touch the wall with your palm

Your hand should fit neatly inside of this space.

  • If the fit is too loose, tighten your abdominal muscles
  • If its too tight, arch your back

Remember what it feels like when you find the right spot. This is the standing posture you want to maintain as much as possible. Do the wall test daily as many times as you need to.

Adjust your sitting posture

If you spend a lot of time behind a desk, fixing your sitting posture is especially important.

  • Avoid crossing your legs

How Can I Relieve Neck Pain At Home

In many cases, you can reduce or relieve your neck pain using simple at-home remedies, including:

  • Medication: Over-the-counter Ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be helpful for neck pain. If your neck pain is severe or has been caused by a traumatic injury, your doctor may prescribe narcotic pain medication to help with your symptoms, but this should be used sparingly if possible and only as directed.
  • Ice: For the first 48-72 hours after an acute injury or the onset of neck pain, you should apply ice or cool compresses intermittently to the area.
  • Heat: After 48-72 hours, you can switch to intermittent heat to help relieve your neck pain. However, take care not to fall asleep with your heating pad or hot compress, as this can cause skin injuries and other issues.
  • Massage: Having a partner or friend gently massage the area can help relieve neck pain in some cases, but it is important to remember that excess massage by an untrained individual may actually exacerbate the symptoms.

If your symptoms persist, it may be appropriate to seek professional help. Dr. Williams and the exceptional team at Interventional Orthopedics of Atlanta can help you determine the cause of your pain and use a wide variety of treatments and techniques, including the innovative Regenexx procedure, to help you get relief from your painful symptoms.

Myofascial Release With A Ball

Lay on the ground, a mat, blanket or your bed. Each surface will provide a different level of resistance or pressure.

For this technique you can use a tennis ball, though I prefer a softer and more pliable ball which you should be able to find at a grocery store, Target, Wallmart, etc. You can use a dryer ball or any rubber or inflatable ball about the size of a baseball or softball.

Place a ball under your body, below your collar bone, in the muscle of your chest. Move your arm up and down along the floor, like a face down snow angel, and find the position that feels the tightest. Crawl your fingers away from you to lengthen your arm and shoulder, then let go and allow your arm and shoulder to relax and sink into the ball. Breathe deep and allow yourself to release, relax and unwind.

You can have your head to either side, or face down with your forehead on a towel, pillow or your other hand/arm.

These techniques are gentle, sustained and relaxing. You should allow yourself to move and adjust as you feel your body letting go, however, moving back and forth over the tender area is not the goal of this self-treatment technique.

These areas may feel tight, tender, or like the spot and the techniques should feel good.

Spend 3 to 5 minutes in each area to allow the fascia to release.

Slowly roll on your side to reposition or to stand up.

Neck Pain And Stiffness: Try These Simple Exercises For Relief

In a video on Facebook, Luke says that when you keep your neck in the downward position continuously for hours, you may experience inflammation. Luke adds that the neck is not naturally designed to be kept in that position. You can move the neck up, down, sideways. But if it’s kept in one position for too long, it leads to stiffness, low blood pressure, cramps, muscle spasms, etc

Luke demonstrates 2 two simple exercises to strengthen the neck. However, he cautions those with severe spondylitis to consult the doctor before performing any exercise.

    Exercise 1

Put your left hand on your right shoulder . Next, move your head towards the right shoulder and hold that for a bit. Move your ears towards the right shoulder. Make sure the right shoulder doesn’t move up either. Hold for 10-15 counts.

Now, do the same on the other side. Put your right hand on your left shoulder and move your ears towards the left shoulder. Hold it for 10-15 counts and relax.

Don’t push much as you may sprain your neck while overdoing the exercise. Do it gently once or twice.

    Exercise 2

Clasp your hands behind your neck . Tilt your chin up a little bit and try driving your elbows at the back. You’ll feel the stretch across your biceps, shoulders, your upper back and your chest. Hold this for about 10 counts and then relax. Do this gently you can hurt yourself if you do it fast. You can do this twice.

Practical Management Of Whiplash: A Guide For Patients

Despite the new evidence about the mechanics of whiplash and the overriding social and legal implications of whiplash, physicians still are called upon to offer practical self-help advice to their patients on what they can or cannot do. The consensus on whiplash management is currently settling upon a combination of therapeutic approaches, which include patient information, reassurance, and mobilization or activation through neck-specific exercises. This approach has not been scientifically validated, but is a synthesis of the best current evidence. The following hand-out approach was first authored by the Physical Medicine Research Foundation in its work on the BC Whiplash Initiative, under the name Neck Talk, and is based on the works in this edition of the BC Medical Journal as well as previous review publications that developed from the World Congress on Whiplash, Vancouver 1999, which also included works from the Quebec Task Force.

10 Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Neck Pain

Dr. Bang says if your neck is bothering you, you also should pay attention to your sleep positions. Sleep only on your side or on your back never on your stomach, he says.

When you sleep on your stomach, often you will end up twisting your head one way or the other for hours at a time, Dr. Bang says. Sleeping on your stomach also can affect your low back because your belly sinks in to the bed if you dont have enough support.

For minor, common causes of neck pain, try these simple remedies:

    • Apply heat or ice to the painful area. Use ice for the first 48 to 72 hours, then use heat after that. Heat may be applied with warm showers, hot compresses or a heating pad. Be sure not to fall asleep with a heating pad or ice bag in place to avoid skin injuries.
    • Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
    • Keep moving, but avoid jerking or painful activities. This helps calm your symptoms and reduce inflammation.
    • Do slow range-of-motion exercises, up and down, side to side, and from ear to ear. This helps to gently stretch the neck muscles.
    • Have a partner gently massage the sore or painful areas.
    • Try sleeping on a firm mattress without a pillow or with a special neck pillow.
    • Ask your health care provider about using a soft neck collar to relieve discomfort. Dont use the collar for a long time. Doing so can make your neck muscles weaker.

If the pain gets in the way of your daily activities, Dr. Bang says to call your doctor.
