Stretches For Sciatica Nerve Pain

Stretching can be an excellent option for many people suffering from minor sciatica pain. It is important to go easy and follow the advice of your doctor treating your sciatica and not overdo yourself but by doing the following stretches you can help to reduce sciatica pain:

  • Laying flat on your back trying to pull one knee as close to your chest as possible. When you get it as close as you can, hold for 10 full seconds and then release. Doing the same with the second knee. An alternative is to do both knees at the same time essentially hugging your legs pulling them to your chest.
  • Laying flat on your stomach with 2 pillows stacked, under your pelvis and lower abdomen. Just relax and lay like this for a short time, 3-5 minutes or longer if possible. When you feel you can remove one pillow, reducing the arch in your lower back, then do so and repeat the same with 1 pillow. After another 5 minutes try to remove the single pillow and lay flat on your stomach. During all 3 rotations, your arms would be best by your side.
  • This one will closely resemble a yoga pose called the cobra. Again laying flat on your stomach, but with both palms flat on the floor . Then extend your arms while keeping your lower abdomen and hips on the floor so your back arches backward. A good tip is to try to look at the ceiling to help ensure your position is correct.

Chiropractic Massage And Acupuncture Treatments

Alternative treatments for sciatica can also provide some pain relief. A chiropractor can adjust your spine in a way that increases spinal movement, which improves spine function and decreases pain. Chiropractic treatment can also relieve lower back pain caused by sciatica, but is less effective for radiating pain.

5 Yoga Poses to Relieve Sciatic Nerve Pain

One of my favorites is using my inversion table. If you have not used an inversion table before, I have written several posts that you can check out, here, here, here. Inversion tables can be used for back pain recovery and as a maintenance program. When I was recovering from my injury in late 2015, my inversion table was a huge part of my recovery, and I continue to use it regularly as preventative maintenance so to speak.

Inversion turns gravity in your favor. By rotating backward, this allows the discs in your back a chance to recover and rehydrate. Think of a herniated disc like an Oreo cookie, when you squeeze the Oreo, the cream filling squirts out the sides.

Its a similar concept when a disc is compromised, the disc space presses up against the nerve, causing pain. With inversion, by elongating the spine, you give the disc a chance to recover and relieve pressure on the nerve.

The Tennis Ball Trick

You can do the tennis ball trick at home or on the go, and theres no racket required. Some people simply sit on the ball for relief, while others roll around on it for a DIY massage.

If youre going the massage route, start by placing the tennis ball under your gluteal muscle where pain occurs. Lift up the leg on the same side as the tennis ball, and then slowly roll back and forth over the ball. You should notice some relief right away if this exercise is a good fit for your condition.

Discontinue the tennis ball massage if your pain gets worse.

If youre wondering how to get your sciatic nerve to stop hurting, yoga is a great option.

But we want to warn you not to do anything that makes your pain worse, even stretching or yoga.

Yoga is perhaps one of the best ways to relieve the pain of sciatica and prevent its reoccurrence as well, depending on the root cause.

Sciatica is a pain in the butt, literally. What better way to ease the pain than to work it out? Yoga will stretch out muscles that are tight and relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve. Some of the best yoga poses for sciatica are:

  • Pigeon on a Chair – This is a great stretch for those who cannot lie flat on the floor without pain. Sit in a comfortable chair. Place your right ankle on top of your left knee and try to move the right knee towards the floor. You can apply very light pressure to the right knee with your hand for a deeper stretch. Hold and repeat with the opposite leg.
  • Pigeon Pose – Place a folded towel under your behind and thigh on the right side as you cross the right leg in front of you. Place the left leg stretched out directly behind you. If you can, bend down at the waist over your right leg. If you cant, simply stay in the pigeon pose and feel the stretch. Change sides.
  • Cobra – If you can lie on your stomach on the floor without pain, the cobra pose is a good choice. Lie with your palms on the floor under your shoulders, feet together, and pointed behind you. Push your torso up off the ground but leave your hips on the floor.

Applying A Topical Temedy

There are a couple of topical patches, creams, and gels having anti-numbing or pain-relieving ingredients to offer pain relief. These ingredients tend to enter your tissues and then work on the symptoms locally. There are hardly any side effects, keeping long-term issues at bay.

Some of the topical medications available over the counter are menthol, camphor, capsaicin, methyl salicylate, and trolamine salicylate. In some products, multiple ingredients may be present to give relief quicker than usual.

Just note that while using these topical medications, do not simultaneously use a heat or ice pack. This is because using both therapies can change or modify the effects of topical remedies.

You can even choose natural topical medications. One of the most common natural remedies is applying a fenugreek paste. To prepare it, you need fenugreek seeds that you then convert into the powdered form and add two teaspoons of it to milk to get a spreadable thickness.

You can then apply this paste twice a day. Fenugreek seeds are powerful anti-inflammatory ingredients.

Another natural option to consider is peppermint oil that is known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Its ability to release pain can help. You need to prepare a mix of five to six drops of peppermint oil and a carrier oil such as coconut oil or sweet almond oil and apply it to the affected area.

What Causes A Sciatica Flare

How To Treat Sciatica – Effective Home Exercise Progression For Sciatic Nerve Pain

The short answer is inflammation. However, with sciatica, it isn’t always clear where that inflammation is.

If you have a herniated disc, a disc bulge, or narrowing in the spine’s disc space, the inflammation can come from sciatica nerve irritation as a result of crowding in the disc space. However, many people don’t have any of those conditions, yet their sciatica still flares up.

Another cause could be generalized inflammation in your body caused by a number of different factors. Environmental factors, an underlying health condition, and your diet are a few of the suspected causes.

Lets Start With Postural Awareness

Lets get started with a quick and easy postural fix that addresses unnecessary strain on your spine and hips. If you work at a desk for the majority of your day, pay attention to how your body is positioned within your chair. Do you slouch? Is there pressure on your sacrum and/or lower back? Does it hurt when you go to stand up? Are you bent over or is your body contorted in an unnatural way for long periods of time?

If you said yes to any or all of these questions then try the following:

  • Sit up straight in your chair and allow the top of your hips to roll slightly forward. This will allow a natural curve in your lumbar spine so that your upper thoracic can rest more comfortably as you work.
  • Take breaks. Get up and walk around once an hour, if not more, to keep the blood flowing and your body mobile. If you are experiencing a sciatic nerve flare-up this will help eliminate stagnation and further compression.
