Sciatic nerve pain is typically called sciatica and its a specific type of back pain. The sciatic nerve is connected to the bottom of the spinal cord and extends down in the buttock, thigh and to the foot.

The sciatic nerve serves a major function of connecting the spinal cord to the lower half of your body. Id say its a pretty important nerve!

Normally, sciatica is caused by a compressed spinal disk. However, sciatica symptoms can rear its ugly face without having a compressed or herniated disk. And you guessed it! Sciatica pain can occur during pregnancy.

Sciatica isnt actually a condition, its simply what we call the pain caused by the irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body and because it covers so much area, there are lots of opportunities for it to become irritated. Sciatica is usually caused by a compressed nerve in the lower spine and the pain it produces can range from rather mild to very severe. Its estimated that up to 40 percent of people will experience sciatica at least once in their life and if youre one of those people, you know it can be very painful and annoying.

Some people confuse general back pain with sciatica but sciatica isnt limited to just the back. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down the legs, ending just below the knee and pain can radiate from any of those areas depending on where the irritation occurs. Its important to note that the pain can occur at any point along the course of the sciatic nerve depending on where the irritation exists and it doesnt have to run the full length of the nerve.

Sometimes, sciatica creates numbness in the leg along the nerve and a tingling pins and needles sensation in one foot. It can be accompanied by numbness in the leg, pain while standing, difficulty breathing, and even anxiety symptoms.

  • Do not let your leg hang for long- Keeping your leg hanged for long, can make you feel tired and is also a cause of sciatic nerve. So, whenever you can take break let your leg relax, it will ease some leg and lower back pain.

These hormones help your body to become flexible enough to accommodate a growing baby – and for the birth itself.

Your babys weight can also put extra pressure on your sciatic nerve. And with the addition of new weight on already tense muscles and unstable joints, it can really cause some discomfort. Occasionally, the position of your baby might also add pressure to the nerve.

But take heart, although sciatica pain can be very uncomfortable for mom, its not harmful to the baby.

As a result of the weight gain, there can be a lot more aches and pains. And sometimes in a second pregnancy, there are even earlier and more exaggerated symptoms than before, Dr. Starck says.
