Day after day, you sit at a computer pounding away at the keys and perusing the internet. Your priority? Getting the work done. Your execution? Not always the best, since you keep getting lost in a sea of distractions. Your positioning? Bad.
Its easy to forget about form and posture when your focus is elsewhere, but when you start developing pain in your wrist and numbness or tingling in your hand and fingers, youre going to want to stop what youre doing, step away from the computer and make some adjustments.
You might have carpal tunnel syndrome.
The carpal tunnel is formed at the palm of your wrist. The narrow passageway or tunnel is created by the small carpal bones that make up the wrist joint and the flexor retinaculum, a fibrous ligamentous band that covers it. Multiple structures pass through, including nine tendons of the fingers and thumb and one major nerve, the median nerve, which provides circulation, movement/function, and sensation to the thumb and first two fingers of the hand.

Drug Treatment And Surgery
In addition to wearing splints and other comfort measures, prescription medications or injections are available.
Oral corticosteroid medication may decrease inflammation and swelling, which might help to reduce pressure on the median nerve. Corticosteroid medication is also available as an injection into the wrist. Injections seem to be more effective than oral corticosteroids for CTS.
No significant evidence supports the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to treat CTS.
Conventional treatments for CTS should take place under the guidance of a doctor.
For people who develop CTS during pregnancy, symptoms usually resolve 6 to 12 weeks after giving birth. Some specialists recommend putting a splint on the wrist while sleeping.
Sometimes, if severe compression is occurring on the median nerve, it may be causing nerve damage or muscle wasting that requires further treatment.
The treating doctor may recommend surgery if CTS is severe and if non-surgical treatments do not help. Surgical treatment of CTS does appear to have the best outcome. Studies have shown that 6 to 12 months after surgery, CTS improves more than it would with just a splint or some other non-surgical treatment.

How Can Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Be Prevented
At the workplace, workers can do on-the-job conditioning, perform stretching exercises, take frequent rest breaks, and use correct posture and wrist position. Wearing fingerless gloves can help keep hands warm and flexible. Workstations, tools and tool handles, and tasks can be redesigned to enable the workers wrist to maintain a natural position during work. Jobs can be rotated among workers. Employers can develop programs in ergonomics, the process of adapting workplace conditions and job demands to the capabilities of workers. However, research has not conclusively shown that these workplace changes prevent the occurrence of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Physical Activity And Exercise
Several studies have shown a reduction in carpal tunnel symptoms when patients were involved in an exercise program, particularly vigorous physical activity. Jogging, swimming, playing sports, biking, even walking around the neighborhood are all physical activities which are good for you, and your carpal tunnel!
How To Manage Carpal Tunnel Syndrome During Pregnancy
The treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome can be determined by various factors, including the symptomsâ severity and your pregnancy stage. However, it is advisable to begin with conservative therapy during pregnancy.
The following are some simple measures that may help alleviate the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome :
- Avoid positions or activities that aggravate your symptoms
- Sit with the affected hand raised on the armrest
- Avoid sleeping on the side of your affected hand
- Maintain a straight wrist position
- Avoid complete flexion and extension positions
- Apply ice to your wrist for 20â30 minutes every 2â3 hours
- Run cold water over the wrist
- Avoid smoking
Depending on the severity of your symptoms, your doctor may suggest the following treatment options:
- Medications, such as topical numbing agents and pain relief corticosteroid injections , for symptomatic relief
- Physiotherapy and occupational therapy, including regular fluid drainage massage, gentle exercises, and the use of a wrist splint, particularly at night, to keep your wrist in a neutral position
- Open or endoscopic surgery in severe cases to enlarge the carpal tunnel. It frequently helps with pain and function. However, if the surgical treatment isnât urgent, delay it until delivery .

What Is Carpal Tunnel
Carpal tunnel syndrome affects millions of Americans each year, yet experts arent entirely sure what causes it. A combination of lifestyle and genetic factors are likely to blame. However, the risk factors are so diverse that nearly everybody has one or more of them at some point in their lives.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause numbness, stiffness, and pain in the fingers and hand. There is no known way to prevent carpal tunnel, but some exercises can reduce your chances of experiencing symptoms.
We spoke with John DiBlasio, MPT, DPT, CSCS, a Vermont-based physical therapist, for exercise suggestions.
Here are three basic moves you can do any time of day. These stretches and exercises are simple and dont require any equipment. You can easily do them at your desk, while waiting in line, or whenever you have a minute or two to spare.
Problems like carpal tunnel are best addressed with stretches done throughout the day, says Dr. DiBlasio. Protect your wrists in just a few minutes a day with these easy movements.

Who Is At Risk Of Developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Women are three times more likely than men to develop carpal tunnel syndrome. People with diabetes or other metabolic disorders that directly affect the bodys nerves and make them more susceptible to compression are also at high risk. CTS usually occurs only in adults.
Workplace factors may contribute to existing pressure on or damage to the median nerve. The risk of developing CTS is not confined to people in a single industry or job, but may be more reported in those performing assembly line worksuch as manufacturing, sewing, finishing, cleaning, and meatpackingthan it is among data-entry personnel.

What Causes Carpal Tunnel During Pregnancy
If youre familiar with carpal tunnel syndrome, you likely think of it being caused by typing for long hours at a computer. During pregnancy, however, CTS can be caused by or, if preexisting, exacerbated by the fluid retention that is common prenatally. If theres fluid accumulation and/or tightness in , the nerve gets squashed first because its the softest structure, says Angela Growse, a physiotherapist at the Rebirth Wellness Centre in London, Ont., who specializes in moms and moms-to-be.
However, because the median nerve runs all the way from the neck, problems further up can manifest in the wrist or hand, says Growse, also a mother of two. As the breasts get bigger, you get tighter, your shoulders round more, youre fatigued, maybe you go into that chin-poked-out position.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can happen at any point during the 40-ish weeks of pregnancy, but occurrences are significantly higher after 32 weeks, according to a study done in the Netherlands.
How To Ease The Pain Caused By The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Following are a few home remedies to ease the pain .
- Ask your doctor to suggest a wrist brace or splint, and wear it at night. Splints prevent you from curling your hands in sleep and avoiding the stress build-up on the joint.
- Apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas on the wrist to relieve the pain. You can also place your hands in ice-cold water for relief.
- Take frequent breaks between work, especially if it involves moving hands and fingers.
- Move your hand frequently to improve the blood flow and decrease fluid accumulation.
- Perform alternative thermal therapy by keeping your hands in cold water and then in warm water for about five to six minutes. It helps reduce the irritation of the symptoms.
- Place white or green cabbage leaves on your affected hands to drain away fluids and relieve the swelling. Do not wash the leaves, instead wipe them clean, and cool in the fridge before using.

Is Carpal Tunnel Without Surgery Possible
Wrist exercises can help relieve carpal tunnel pain along with other pain-relieving methods such as ice packs, wrist splints at night, corticosteroid injections, and taking regular breaks from actions that cause carpal tunnel pain. When minor treatment doesnt work for carpal tunnel pain, doctors may recommend surgery.
Can This Injury Or Condition Be Prevented
There is no single proven strategy for preventing CTS, but there are ways to reduce stress to your hands and wrists. Since there are several factors that can contribute to developing CTS, one single solution may not be effective.

How Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treated
Treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome depends on how severe your pain and symptoms are and if there is weakness. In 2008, the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons released guidelines for the effective treatment of carpal tunnel. The recommendation was to try to manage carpal tunnel pain without surgery, if possible.
Nonsurgical options include:
Surgery may be necessary if theres severe damage to your median nerve. Surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome involves cutting the band of tissue in the wrist that crosses the median nerve so as to lessen the pressure on your nerve. Factors that determine success or failure are age of the patient, duration of symptoms, diabetes mellitus, and if there is weakness . The outcome is usually good.
Carpal Tunnel: How To Treat Severe Symptoms
1. Bracing your hand at night forSEVEREsymptoms
Severe carpal tunnel syndrome requires the most aggressive B.R.E.M. therapies. Nocturnal bracing is required, just as it is for mild and moderate symptoms.
Just as with mild and moderate carpal tunnel symptoms, SEVERE symptoms also necessitates night bracing. This will prevent you from over-bending your hand and further compressing your median nerve.
As a reminder, NEVER immobilize your wrist during the day. And DO NOT use a night brace that has a palmar spine.
At this severe stage, you should take particular precautions. If you have severe symptoms, your chances of developing carpal tunnel syndrome on your other hand is 80% within 12 months of symptoms appearing on the first hand.
Therefore, if you’re in a job at high riskfor developing carpal tunnel syndrome, you should be proactive. Get ahead of the symptoms immediately. That means nocturnally brace your “good” hand so it doesn’t develop symptoms at all. Keep using the night brace on the “good” hand until symptoms have subsided on the first hand.

Resting your hand is secondary to avoiding the stress causing injury to your hand. Severe symptoms can ONLY be relieved by first stopping the stressful activity.
This is a sad reality for most workers. But be assured that if you don’t quit the activity, you will NEVER restore your hand.

Carpal Tunnel: How To Treat Mild Symptoms
1. Bracing your hand at night forMILDsymptoms
Wear a wrist brace at night only. Doing so takes the stress off your median nerve.
Never wear a restrictive wrist brace during the day as you work with your hand. Doing so only makes your wrist subconsciously fight the restriction in addition to doing its regular job. Such stress makes carpal tunnel syndrome much worse.
Also, be sure to wear a certified carpal tunnel night brace.Wearing the wrong kind of brace can do more damage to your wrist. For instance, NEVER wear a night brace that contains a palmar spine . The spine will push into your carpal tunnel space and compress your median nerve. This makes symptoms worse, especially when you first wake up in the morning.
2. Resting your hand forMILDsymptoms
Rest is the body’s way if repairing just about everything, even carpal tunnel syndrome. But nobody can rest their hands 24/7. The next best thing is to take short “mini-breaks”.
This means while you work, stop and drop your hands. Then shake them out for a couple seconds. This increases blood flowand relaxes the tendonsthat were stressed during the hand activity. If your hands feel warm after shaking them out, it means blood is flowing through them.
But what’s better than rest is avoiding the stressful hand activitiy altogether. Unfortunately, for most workers complete avoidance of daily hand activities and tasks is nearly impossible.
