What Is The Cause Of A Stiff Neck

A stiff neck occurs for a few reasons.

Often, too much stress has been placed on the neck and shoulders, leading to tightness and pain. If you spend too long straining your neck in an unnatural position, you might find yourself dealing with some stiffness.

Many everyday activities at home or work can encourage neck stiffnessin addition to other back and neck problems.

For instance:

  • Prolonged hours in front of a computer can increase the strain on your neck and shoulders, leading to poor posture.
  • Sleeping in an awkward position could leave you struggling to move your neck the next morning.
  • Too much time spent looking down at things such as a smartphone or book often leads to muscle strain that, in turn, leads to stiffness.

    Preventing Pain And Injury

Posture. Using correct posture and keeping your spine in alignment are the most important things you can do for your neck and back . The lower back bears most of your weight, so proper alignment of this section can prevent injury to your vertebrae, discs, and other portions of the spine. If you have back or neck pain, you may need to make adjustments to your daily standing, sitting, and sleeping habits and learn proper ways to lift and bend. Your workspace may need to be rearranged to keep your spine from slouching. Because extra pounds can make back pain worse, you should maintain a weight that is appropriate for your height and body frame.

Exercise. Regular exercise is important to prevent back pain and injury. A program of strengthening, stretching and aerobic exercises will improve your overall fitness level. Research has shown that people who are physically fit are more resistant to back injuries and pain, and recover quicker when they do have injuries, than those who are less physically fit .

    1. Over the counter Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory medications or NSAIDs. There are two major generic types of NSAIDs: Ibuprofen and Naproxen.

Both used to be by prescription and are relatively safe to use per their labels. Brand names include Advil and Aleve . Use only if approved by your physician.

    2. Apply heat to your shoulder. A mild hot shower can accomplish this on your shoulder for about 5 to 10 minutes. Often patients have shoulder pain from sleeping. A good hot shower can certainly help with this pain. Or you can use an electric hot pack. If using the electric hot pack, set on medium heat, not high heat level.

Research shows us that our bodies respond to medium heat levels better than intense heat levels. Also, microwave pellets or rice hot packs work well at home.

Be careful not to apply heat to an acute or recent injury. Check out this article to understand the difference between heat and ice.

A shoulder injury from the workout.

    3. Apply ice to your shoulder. A cold pack inside a pillowcase for ten minutes can be significant. Ice massage is also an option. Ice should not be left in direct contact with the skin for over 5 minutes due to the genuine possibility of frostbite.

    4. Stretches. Stretching the muscles that encompass the shoulder joint can help with your pain and possibly prevent future injury. Muscles capable of moving freely through your shoulder’s natural motion will not have the constant stress that tight muscle experiences.

Ways To Fix The Neck & Shoulder Pain You Feel While Working From Home

      May 11, 2020

Working from home may be the new normal for some individuals given the COVID-19 pandemicbut did you know that the layout of your home office may affect your overall neck and shoulder health?

Laurent Delavaux, M.D., an interventional pain physician at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, says that roughly 10-25% of individuals will have new neck pain each year while another 7-34% of people will experience new shoulder pain. These ailments are becoming increasingly more common given that many of us use computers or phones more frequently throughout the day, shares the expert.

Dr. Delavaux explains three common work-related scenarios that can lead to neck and/or shoulder pain and provides helpful solutions:

Problem: I have bad posture while working on a laptop, computer or phone. According to Dr. Delavaux, bad posture is when an individual rounds his or her upper back and head forward while also rounding the shoulders forward. This puts a lot of stress on your neck and certain shoulder muscles, he says.

Solution: Fix your posture. Dr. Delavaux advises that individuals practice good posture. This is when the shoulders are relaxed but pulled back, with the chest open and head level with ears at the level of the shoulders, he says. Techniques to improve your posture include:

If there is any pain doing these stretches, then it is best to not continue until you have reviewed your concerns with your doctor, he cautions.

How Are Neck And Shoulder Pain Treated

The treatment of soft tissue neck and shoulder pain often includes the use of anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen or naproxen . Pain relievers such as acetaminophen may also be recommended. Depending on the source of pain, drugs like muscle relaxers and even antidepressants might be helpful. Pain also may be treated with a local application of moist heat or ice. Local corticosteroid injections are often helpful for arthritis of the shoulder. For both neck and shoulder pain movement, exercises may help. For cases in which nerve roots or the spinal cord are involved, surgical procedures may be necessary. Your doctor can tell you which is the best course of treatment for you.

How To Get Rid Of Stiff Neck In Less Than 90 Seconds

Living with Neck Pain in Santa Maria is terrible! We know, because we see hundreds of patients here on the central coast every month with just this issue!

Working on computers and staring down at our smartphones for hours each day has left over 20% of us experiencing neck pain over the past few months. A stiff neck is usually the result of postural issues that have tired the neck muscles over time. Weakened, or unbalanced, muscle strength can place additional stress on your spinal joints and lead to changes in how you move, extra pressure on your discs, and pain.

      Why it Matters:

If you are looking down at your digital devices all day every day, the stress can add up and result in your neck not moving correctly. At this point, it’s only a matter of time before you wake up with a stiff neck or turn your head during the day and are greeted by an intense muscle discomfort or pain.

      What Causes A Pinched Nerve

How To Get Rid Of Shoulder And Neck Pain

A pinched nerve can be caused by several conditions including spondylosis, stenosis, bulging discs or herniated disc. This can be caused by prolonged non-ideal postures or trauma. However, most of the time pinched nerves are caused by age-related degeneration of the bones and discs that make up the vertebrae . When this happens, the discs decrease in height and this can cause the narrowing of spaces where the nerves exit which can compress the nerves. This degeneration can also lead to bone spurs which can compress on the nerves.

      • Weakness in arm
      • Can vary with changes in head and neck position

Note: In my experience, this condition can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms could simply be elbow pain or shoulder pain.

Many times, a patient will come to me with a diagnosis of elbow tendonitis, when actually the root cause of the symptoms is an irritation of a nerve in the neck. As you can see, this condition can be easily misdiagnosed.

      Is there a long-term solution?

As mentioned previously, the most common cause of this is from age related causes. We cannot reverse this, but we can control our posture, which can put us a better position to decrease the likelihood of compressing nerve. Research shows that improving posture can provide sustainable relief.
