But if you’ve had these symptoms for a while, they might be caused not by a virus but by a valveyour lower esophageal sphincter. The medical term for this process is gastroesophageal reflux the backward flow of acid is called acid reflux.

Acid reflux can cause sore throats and hoarseness and may literally leave a bad taste in your mouth. When acid reflux produces chronic symptoms, it is known as gastroesophageal reflux disorder, or GERD. The most common symptom of GERD is heartburnpain in the upper abdomen and chest.

How Can Exercise Help Constipation

Exercise helps constipation by lowering the time it takes food to move through the large intestine. This limits the amount of water your body absorbs from the stool. Hard, dry stools are harder to pass. Plus, aerobic exercise speeds up your breathing and heart rate. This helps to stimulate the natural squeezing of muscles in your intestines. Intestinal muscles that squeeze better will help move stools out quickly.

Excessive stomach acid can be uncomfortable to live with, and while in many cases it is a minor nuisance, it can lead to serious health problems when not treated.

Stomach acid is important to the digestive system. It helps us process food and it kills harmful bacteria. The stomach makes the hormone called gastrin, which creates hydrochloric acid. When these acid levels increase, it can lead to hyperacidity. Excess stomach acid can range from mild to severe.

Our diet, environment, and even stress can be contributing factors to excessive stomach acid. There are, in fact, relatively simple ways to reduce excess stomach acid or prevent it altogether.

Even though I specialized in cardiology, my patientsand even people who werent my patientshave always tended to share what was hurting them. Backs, knees, necks, shoulders everyone seemed to have some kind of ache or pain.

I wasnt immune, either. For years I coped with a bad hip, courtesy of my college wrestling days.

Inevitably, the accounts and descriptions of these chronic pains would end the same way. Got any suggestions for me?

If You Have Heartburn Or Gas

The remedy: Reach for the right meds

There are lots of OTC options to choose from, but not all are designed for quick relief. Some, like Prevacid and Zantac, for example, must be taken well before the pain strikes. To prep for occasional discomfort, Dr. Rao recommends keeping Gaviscon and simethicone in your medicine cabinet.

Gaviscon is her top pick for pain in the upper part of the abdomen, which is usually a sign of heartburn. “You can take it as needed, and it forms a protective layer over the food,” Dr. Rao explains. If you’re feeling bloated and gassy, simethicone may help. It encourages small gas bubbles to join together with others, making them easier to pass.

When Should I See My Doctor

In some cases, you should seek urgent medical attention or consult a doctor if you have abdominal pain.

If you have a sudden, severe, incapacitating pain in your abdomen, go immediately to your nearest emergency department or call triple zero and ask for an ambulance.

You should also seek urgent medical attention if you have pain that:

  • is severe and/or getting worse
  • has lasted for several hours or more
  • wakes you from sleep
  • is spreading to your neck, chest or shoulders
  • makes it difficult to swallow

Urgent medical attention is also required if you have abdominal pain accompanied by

  • unexplained weight loss
  • skin that appears yellow

If you are experiencing pain high up in your abdomen that is made worse by exercise it could be angina or a heart attack. If you, or someone near you is experiencing symptoms of a heart attack, call triple zero immediately and ask for an ambulance.

If you are pregnant and experiencing abdominal pain, check with your doctor or midwife. Abdominal pains are common in pregnancy, but should always be checked out.

If your abdominal pain does not match the situations above, but it is recurrent or persistent , or it started mild but is worsening, you should still consult a doctor.

When Natural Pain Relief Isnt Enough

As great as these pain relieving techniques are, Ill admit there still may be times when you need help from conventional medicine to get relief. With my hip, I eventually gave in and had a full joint replacement.

Hopefully, you wont need something as drastic as surgery. However, it may turn out that you would, in fact, benefit from a prescription pain medication. If youve tried the alternatives and still arent getting the results you need, its okay to go ahead with this. Just follow the same advice I used to give my heart patients. Take the meds, but keep using the natural therapies, too. Theyll help reduce the dosage you need, which will mean less toxicity in your body.

Remember, pain doesnt need to define your life. You can take healthy, natural steps to control it.

How Is The Cause Of Chronic Abdominal Pain Diagnosed

Your healthcare provider will examine you. He or she may ask about your family history of abdominal pain. Tell your provider about your symptoms and the medicines you currently take. Treatment And Home Remedies For Abdominal Pain

How abdominal pain is treated is highly dependent on the diagnosis. Medications that reduce inflammation may help with stomach pains resulting from ulcers.

But other conditions, like kidney stones, may require more intensive treatment like shock wave lithotripsy. Inflammation of the gall bladder might require gall bladder surgery.

Your doctor might prescribe a pain-modifying drug, like amitriptyline or trazodone, to address the pain. These may help change the way the brain processes pain signals.

If you and your doctor have determined that your abdominal pain is not the result of a serious medical condition, there are a number of home health remedies that may provide relief. Heres a brief list:

  • bitters and soda
  • BRAT diet
  • peppermint

Not all forms of abdominal pain are preventable. But you can minimize the risk of developing abdominal pain by:

  • eating a healthy diet
  • exercising regularly
  • eating smaller meals

If you have an intestinal disorder, like Crohns disease, follow the diet your doctor has given you to minimize discomfort. If you have GERD, dont eat within 2 hours of bedtime.

Lying down too soon after eating may cause heartburn and abdominal pain. Try waiting at least 2 hours after eating before lying down.
