When Cheryl Jamesons second child, Trinity, was about four months old, Jameson started to experience aching, burning and stabbing pain in her left wrist while nursing. Sometimes it was so severe shed have to shake her wrist aggressively to make it stop. The mom from Sherwood Park, Alta., soldiered on, breastfeeding her daughter, whos now two years old, until she was one.

Ignoring the pain came at a cost. Almost a year and multiple medical appointments later, Jameson is still searching for a solution. Ive seen a chiropractor and a physiotherapist. Ive had numerous X-rays and an MRI. Ive tried taping, wearing a brace and a steroid shot with no luck. Jameson has also consulted with two surgeons. Theyve ruled out triangular fibrocartilage complex and carpal tunnel syndrome. She is hoping to find some answers and relief. I cant work out, pick up my kids, drive properlybasically, anything that involves twisting the wrist or strength, I cant do.

Wrist And Thumb Pain After Pregnancy

It has been a long journey and youve been through a lot over the last 10 months. Youre already exhausted and youve only just started your life with a new addition to the family. Life doesnt get much busier than this, right?! How frustrating then that youre having to battle through this new period with a sore wrist and thumb. If its any consolation, youre not alone. One study from 2017 reported over 50% of women experienced wrist pain following delivery of their baby, and over 80% of those still had pain two months on. Read on to find out why.

The most common cause of wrist and thumb pain after pregnancy is a condition called De Quervains Tenosynovitis. Thats a bit of a mouthful so let us explain simply. There are a few different tendons which run from muscles in the forearm along the thumb side of the wrist, which act to move the thumb away from the hand when the palm is held out flat. The tendons are covered in a thin sheath of tissue which provides important lubrication to allow for smooth movement. On their journey from the forearm, the tendons and their sheaths have to pass through a little tunnel, made up of bone and soft tissue. In De Quervains, the tendons and/or sheaths become thickened and this leads to problems with movement through the tunnel.

    FOR Cynthia Frey, the mysterious pain in her wrist started about a week after she gave birth to her son, Jack, in March of last year. At first, she thought she had banged her hand. But as days went by, it started to hurt more and more until the pain was so severe, she had trouble holding her baby.

    ”It was a shooting pain from my thumb up my wrist and it was constant,” recalled Mrs. Frey, 34, from Manhattan. After several visits to her doctor and weeks of taking Motrin to no avail, Mrs. Frey consulted a hand specialist. She walked into his office holding her son and, in tears, said she thought she had broken her wrist. The doctor took one look and said, ”I know what it is, I see women like this all the time.”

    She had DeQuervain’s Tendonitis, a painful condition caused by inflammation of the tendons in the thumb. So common is the condition among women who have recently given birth that it is sometimes called ”new mom’s syndrome.”

    ”It arises from repetitive lifting activities using improper technique,” said Dr. Louis Catalano III, attending physician at the C.V. Starr Hand Surgery Center at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan, who treated Mrs. Frey.

    In Mrs. Frey’s case, as with so many new mothers, and a few new dads, the ”repetitive lifting” was the everyday act of picking up her baby.

    There are no statistics on the number of women afflicted, but Dr. Catalano estimates that he sees two to three new patients a week with DeQuervain’s Tendonitis.

    Place your hand flat on a table and then gently move your affected thumb up and away from the table surface and slowly bring it back to the table. Repeat 10 times for 3-5 times/day.

    Place your hand so that your fingers are pointing straight ahead like youre reaching for a handshake. With your other hand gently lift your affected thumb towards you and then back in line with your fingers. Repeat 10 times for 3-5 times/day.

    Place your affected wrist and forearm on a table with your thumb pointing upwards. Your hand should be hanging off the side of the table, while your forearm and wrist are supported by the table. Gently lower your wrist downwards below the table edge until you start to feel discomfort. Then use your other hand to bring your hand back up in line with your wrist.
