How To Prevent Wrist Pain While Breastfeeding

Colles

For some moms, breastfeeding can have crippling effects.

By Samantha ShepherdSeptember 19, 2016

When Cheryl Jamesons second child, Trinity, was about four months old, Jameson started to experience aching, burning and stabbing pain in her left wrist while nursing. Sometimes it was so severe shed have to shake her wrist aggressively to make it stop. The mom from Sherwood Park, Alta., soldiered on, breastfeeding her daughter, whos now two years old, until she was one.

Ignoring the pain came at a cost. Almost a year and multiple medical appointments later, Jameson is still searching for a solution. Ive seen a chiropractor and a physiotherapist. Ive had numerous X-rays and an MRI. Ive tried taping, wearing a brace and a steroid shot with no luck. Jameson has also consulted with two surgeons. Theyve ruled out triangular fibrocartilage complex and carpal tunnel syndrome. She is hoping to find some answers and relief. I cant work out, pick up my kids, drive properlybasically, anything that involves twisting the wrist or strength, I cant do.

If using a pillow or cushion to take the pressure off, make sure the pillow is under your arm and not under the baby. Otherwise, it will be difficult to move your baby closer as she latches on, and she may only get a shallow latch, which can lead to another big pain: sore nipples.

How Can You Treat Mommy Thumb At Home

Sometimes, mommy thumb will get better over time on its own. Avoid using your thumb, wrist, and hand as much as possible as the injured tendon heals.

While this may seem like impossible advice if you have a newborn, look to alternatives like baby wearing instead of carrying your little one in your arms or using your forearms to push the stroller on flat ground that may lessen repetitive motions.

In mild cases, simply changing how you do daily tasks can help relieve symptoms. Check how you position your hands and body when you carry and nurse your baby.

Also remember to relax and stretch your hand and wrist throughout the day.

Home remedies to help ease mommy thumb symptoms include:

  • trying different positions while feeding and holding your baby
  • using a sling and pillow to help support your babys weight
  • taking several breaks rather than trying to finish a task all at once

Contrast therapy may help ease pain and inflammation. Try alternating the following steps:

  • Use a heating pad, hot water bottle, or warm water for heat therapy on your hands.
  • Use a damp towel, cool water in a bowl or an ice pack wrapped in a towel for cold therapy relief.

A splint can help keep your thumb and wrist immobile while the tendons heal. Ask your medical provider about the best splint or brace for mommy thumb.

Theyre normally made out of thick fabric and light plastic with adjustable straps for comfort. You can take off the splint when you sleep and wear it during the day when youre active.

Wrist And Thumb Pain After Pregnancy

It has been a long journey and youve been through a lot over the last 10 months. Youre already exhausted and youve only just started your life with a new addition to the family. Life doesnt get much busier than this, right?! How frustrating then that youre having to battle through this new period with a sore wrist and thumb. If its any consolation, youre not alone. One study from 2017 reported over 50% of women experienced wrist pain following delivery of their baby, and over 80% of those still had pain two months on. Read on to find out why.

The most common cause of wrist and thumb pain after pregnancy is a condition called De Quervains Tenosynovitis. Thats a bit of a mouthful so let us explain simply. There are a few different tendons which run from muscles in the forearm along the thumb side of the wrist, which act to move the thumb away from the hand when the palm is held out flat. The tendons are covered in a thin sheath of tissue which provides important lubrication to allow for smooth movement. On their journey from the forearm, the tendons and their sheaths have to pass through a little tunnel, made up of bone and soft tissue. In De Quervains, the tendons and/or sheaths become thickened and this leads to problems with movement through the tunnel.

Fitness; When Mothering Is A Pain In The Wrist

FOR Cynthia Frey, the mysterious pain in her wrist started about a week after she gave birth to her son, Jack, in March of last year. At first, she thought she had banged her hand. But as days went by, it started to hurt more and more until the pain was so severe, she had trouble holding her baby.

”It was a shooting pain from my thumb up my wrist and it was constant,” recalled Mrs. Frey, 34, from Manhattan. After several visits to her doctor and weeks of taking Motrin to no avail, Mrs. Frey consulted a hand specialist. She walked into his office holding her son and, in tears, said she thought she had broken her wrist. The doctor took one look and said, ”I know what it is, I see women like this all the time.”

She had DeQuervain’s Tendonitis, a painful condition caused by inflammation of the tendons in the thumb. So common is the condition among women who have recently given birth that it is sometimes called ”new mom’s syndrome.”

”It arises from repetitive lifting activities using improper technique,” said Dr. Louis Catalano III, attending physician at the C.V. Starr Hand Surgery Center at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan, who treated Mrs. Frey.

In Mrs. Frey’s case, as with so many new mothers, and a few new dads, the ”repetitive lifting” was the everyday act of picking up her baby.

There are no statistics on the number of women afflicted, but Dr. Catalano estimates that he sees two to three new patients a week with DeQuervain’s Tendonitis.

Causes Of Hanging Belly After Pregnancy

    Trigger Finger Treatment Kerala

During pregnancy, the baby grows in size gradually and the uterus needs sufficient space to accommodate the growing baby in abdomen. This causes the uterus to enlarge, which results in stretching of abdominal muscles. Expansion of uterus during pregnancy makes the belly skin loose, which causes hanging belly after pregnancy. Another cause of hanging belly is the excessive stretching of the abdominal skin. Presence of elastin maintains elasticity of the skin when it stretches during pregnancy. However, these elastin fibres get damaged due to continuous stretching of skin during entire pregnancy period and causes hanging belly after pregnancy.

Other contributing cause of hanging belly after pregnancy is the expansion of abdomen, due to accumulation of fat in the abdominal region. Post-delivery, weight loss can be achieved, but the accumulated fat may take time to go and it can appear as hanging belly.

Top 5 Tips On Your Road To Recovery

The great news is that most people recover with rest and time. Drastic measures like surgery are not commonly necessary. But sometimes, it feels like the injury lasts forever and just isnt going away. Its for this reason that weve compiled some of the best advice on how to speed up your recovery.

  • Acupuncture: This should be #1 on your list. Acupuncture is incredibly effective at reducing pain and healing time. Its also great at reducing swelling and inflammation, which helps give your hand more range of motion with less pain. Consider this your number one holistic alternative to a corticosteroid injection into the wrist.
  • Use a splint: Give your thumb and wrist a break by immobilizing it using a splint. This helps prevent further aggravation of the injury and reduces swelling / pain. This is the cheapest and yet the hardest advice for so many new mommas. Telling them not to use one of their hands when they have to care for a newborn isnt easy. Its for this reason that you need support from the people around you. Spouse and surrounding family members should take a more active role in lifting the newborn and positioning the baby for you, so that you dont have to do any of the heavy lifting.
  • Limit your phone usage: Impossible, we know. But the thumb movement caused by texting and swiping on your phone screen is incredibly aggravating to someone with De Quervains. Try using your index finger to do all that work instead.
  • Secret #6: How To Get Rid Of Carpal Tunnel Pain At Night

Why does everything seem to hurt worse at night when you are trying to get your rest?! The answer to this is complicated, but most times, as in the case of carpal tunnel, its because we sleep in positions that cause pain. The pain from carpal tunnel can also increase at night because of a buildup of fluid, which put pressure on the area.

To find carpal tunnel relief at night, you need to avoid sleeping in certain positions that aggravate carpal tunnel such as

    • The fetal position, where your arms are in front of you, the outside of your hands-on top of each other, wrists bent in towards the chest.
    • Sleeping on your stomach with your hands under the pillow
    • Any position that bends your wrists

You can get more rest if you try the following before you hit the hay:

    • Sleep with a wrist brace
    • Sleep on your back with your arms and wrists flat on your side
    • Sleep on your side with a pillow between your arms so your wrists remain straight
    • Doing the stretching exercises listed in secret #7
    • Drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bed to relax the muscles
    • Massage your hands, wrists, and arms before bed
    • Soak your hands and wrists in warm water for 10-15 minutes before bed to relax the muscles

Changing the position in which you sleep will probably do more good than anything else, but the other measures mentioned here have also been known to help. Experiment and try several options to find which ones work best for you.

    Secret #10: Chiropractic Massage

You might not know that massage has so many benefits beyond making you feel really relaxed. Many people find that;chiropractic massage;can help prevent surgery by breaking up the scar tissues and adhesions that occur from overuse or repetitive use.

Many times, carpal tunnel involves more than just the wrists and arms, but the shoulders and neck as well. Poor posture or subluxations of the spine, shoulders, and neck can cause muscles to tighten. Tight neck and/or shoulder muscles can cause you to make accommodations that can lead to swelling in the wrists, elbows, and forearms.

Chiropractic massage is perhaps one of the most relaxing and beneficial things you can do for your body, including stopping the advancement and pain of carpal tunnel.

Eliminate Wrist Stiffness After a Wrist Injury: Phase 1

You can work on strengthening the thumb and wrist with the following exercises. You can perform these without weights initially and then can progress to using some weights when you are more comfortable with the exercises.

Place your hand flat on a table and then gently move your affected thumb up and away from the table surface and slowly bring it back to the table. Repeat 10 times for 3-5 times/day.

Place your hand so that your fingers are pointing straight ahead like youre reaching for a handshake. With your other hand gently lift your affected thumb towards you and then back in line with your fingers. Repeat 10 times for 3-5 times/day.

Place your affected wrist and forearm on a table with your thumb pointing upwards. Your hand should be hanging off the side of the table, while your forearm and wrist are supported by the table. Gently lower your wrist downwards below the table edge until you start to feel discomfort. Then use your other hand to bring your hand back up in line with your wrist.

Use an elastic band and place your fingers inside. Stretch the rubber band by extending your fingers slowly. Repeat 10 times for 3-5 times/day.
