To perform this movement, follow the given steps:-

  • Stand upright pinching both shoulder blades back slightly.
  • Stand on one end of the band and hold onto its other end.
  • Start with lifting your elbows and keeping your forearm parallel to the floor.
  • Now rotate your forearm making your palms face the wall in front of you.
  • Then firmly holding the band, push it upwards as if performing an overhead press. You can also imagine punching the ceiling.

Pulling out the sword

Follow the given steps to get this movement right:-

  • Stand upright and slightly pinch your shoulder blades back.
  • Hold the band with both hands and start this movement with the hand that is on the opposite hip of the injured shoulder.
  • Finally, pull the band in an upward direction towards the injured shoulder. You can imagine pulling out the sword from its sheath.

Other Possible Reasons For The Pain

a)Referred pain from the Cervical and/or Thoracic spine

Issues originating in the Cervical and Thoracic spine can refer pain to the shoulder blade region.

Obtain a scan to these areas if you suspect this might be the case.

b)Strain to the Erector Spinae muscles

The Spinalis, Longissimus and Iliocostalis muscles are situated underneath the Rhomboid muscles and are often involved with strains.

I find that this is particularly true if you are have a twisted spine.

c)Dorsal Scapular Nerve issues

If the pain tends to present as burning and/or tingling between the shoulder blade and spine, this may suggest neurological involvement of the Dorsal Scapular Nerve.

The Dorsal Scapular nerve originates in the neck and travels downwards to attach to the Rhomboids.

This nerve tends to be overstretched in those who have rounded/depressed shoulders and can lead to nerve pain in the Rhomboid region.

If you feel that this is your issue, I would suggest that you correct the position of your shoulder blades.

Generally speaking you will likely need to hold your shoulder blades in a more elevated and retracted position.

d)Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is the compression/irritation of the nerves that pass between the neck and shoulder.

This issue can often refer pain between the shoulder blades.

e)Injuries to the ribs

Any trauma to the back of the ribs can present as pain between the shoulder blades.

Here are some simple ways to help you determine if you have uneven shoulders.

a)For Shoulder height:

  • Stand relaxed in front of a mirror.
  • Locate the line of your collar bones.
  • Compare the height.
  • Stand relaxed in front of a mirror.
  • Locate the border of the upper trapezius muscle on either side.
  • Compare the height.

Note: Increased muscle bulk may give a false illusion of a higher shoulder.

3.Uneven shoulder blades

  • Take a photo of your back.
  • Locate the outline of the scapula:

4.How do your clothes fit?

Does your shirt/bra strap tend to always fall down to one side?

3. Lying down

  • Repeat 10 times

    We don’t fully understand what causes a frozen shoulder, but an inflammatory process is probably involved.
