Q. Is it OK to use WD-40 on sore joints? I have arthritis and WD-40 works quicker and lasts longer than the pharmacy rubs. Have any studies been done on WD-40 lubricant used on the human body?

A. Our can of WD-40 claims that it stops squeaks, protects metal, loosens rusted parts and frees sticky mechanisms. There is no mention anywhere on the label about arthritis. We first heard about people using WD-40 on stiff joints from the owner of our local hardware store. He was surprised at how many older folks relied on this remedy for their personal rusted parts and sticky mechanisms. We combed the medical literature and could find no studies to support its usefulness for arthritis, though. Dr. Dean Edells Health Letter suggests that massaging sore joints with almost anything, even WD-40, may make them feel better, especially if you believe in it.

If you are going to get hyaluronic acid injections, the actual process is fairly simple. They are directly injected into the affected knee joint, specifically within the synovial fluid that bathes the joint, Dr. Miller says. Like any injection, it may seem more painful to some people than others, but there should not be a lot of pain since a sharp needle is used and the joint may be numbed first with a local anesthetic.

Relieve Knee Pain In 1 Minute Using A Kitchen Rag

For many people with conditions such as arthritis, ibuprofen has long been the medicine of choice. It can be the deciding factor in patients being pain-free enough to walk, or not.

But arthritis patients are now putting industrial lubricant WD-40 on their stiff and aching joints because they fear, wrongly, that ibuprofen will make coronavirus symptoms worse, a leading pharmacist has warned.

Mixed messages about the safety of this painkilling and anti-inflammatory drug during the pandemic has led to others using aloe vera and snake oil lotions and potions bought on the internet, says Sid Dajani, a pharmacist in Hampshire and former treasurer of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

Despite the latest NHS advice stating the drug is safe to take, sales are at around a third of their normal levels, he adds.

Concerns emerged on March 14, when French health minister Olivier Veran said ibuprofen could aggravate coronavirus infections.

His comments are thought to be partly based on remarks made by an infectious diseases doctor about four young Covid-19 patients with no underlying health conditions who developed serious symptoms after taking ibuprofen, as well as a letter that had been published in the journal Lancet Respiratory Medicine three days earlier.

But it was too late worries about the link were already rife and, on March 17, the NHS advised people with symptoms of Covid-19 to avoid taking ibuprofen and use paracetamol instead.

Can Knee Pain Heal On Its Own

Some knee pain can improve and heal on its own. When you have overexerted yourself doing something that youre not used to, maybe climbed a full height of stadium steps for the first time all year, or tried a workout with a lot of squats and lunges. This can bring on a condition called delayed-onset- muscle -soreness . You will feel this pain in the overworked muscle, not the joint itself, and this type of pain will go away after a few days of rest/ modified activity.

When you develop pain in the knee joint, or right around the knee. Its unlikely this will go away on its own. This type of pain is typically due to abnormal strain or stress on the joint, rest and medication will help temporarily, but if you want to get better- then you need to figure out what is causing this extra stress and strain.

How Long Does Relief Last

It is quite variable but many patients report six months of relief, and the injections may be repeated every six months or based on physician judgement, Dr. Miller says. Our Facebook community confirms this, with most patients telling us relief lasted from four to six months they got the shots every six months. But, as Sarah Quina shared, they dont work repeatedly forever. Also, the shots may take several weeks to go into effect, unlike steroid injections, which work much faster.

What Causes Knee Pain When I Havent Had An Injury

Most typically people develop knee pain. Now you can have a traumatic injury where you step in a hole, or jump and land awkwardly and twist the knee. Contact sport injuries such as in football can be very traumatic and usually result in a torn ligament such as an ACL, MCL, and/ or PCL. And these types of injuries typically require surgery, especially if you are an athlete.

But for most of us- knee pain starts off as a ache or throb, and gets worse over time. There is no event or traumatic injury to really pin it on. But gradually developing pains are more of the cumulative type.

The knee joint will be influenced by the muscles and joints both above and below . The alignment of your hip directly impacts the alignment of your knee. And if you have a weakness in your hip muscles, your knee will tend to move more towards your midline .

Your hip alignment is also why knee pain is so much more common in females: since women tend to have wider hips, theyre more knock-kneed on average to begin with. They also tend to have less muscle development in their quads, which is another factor.

Determining The Cause Of Knee Pain

Home Hacks, Cleaning Tips, Recipes & DIY

When you first meet with an orthopedic specialist, they wont roll you into the operating room right away. First, your doctor will want to understand what is causing the pain. They may ask you questions about your workouts, lifestyle, and when the pain is at its worst. They may also use X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans to get a more detailed understanding of your knee joint and the connecting tissues and bones. The more your doctors know, the better they can help you. And in some cases, the underlying cause of your knee pain could surprise you.

Sometimes the villain is hiding in the same place as our favorite cookies and potato chipsour waistline. Carrying extra weight can be extra hard on your knee joints, so dont be alarmed if your doctor recommends shedding a few pounds before getting out the prescription pad. You dont need to fit into your letterman jacket, just give your knees a little less to carry.

For instance- the kneecap will have a lot of pressure on the joint when you are doing a knee extension machine at the gym, but this exercise is typically fine for the rest of the knee joint.

Knee pain can be very frustrating. Have you found yourself struggling to get off the floor after playing with your kids or grandkids due to knee pain?

Find yourself avoiding steps or long periods of standing?

Shaky knees shaking up your daily routine?

Overall, knee pain is a bit like lower back pain: it seems like everyone has it, and not many people really understand what they can do about it. In addition, many people are under the impression, often via trusted advice from a physician or a friend, that they just have to live with it because theyre getting older. I could write an entire article about how much that advice riles me up, but Ill stay focused!

The frustrating thing about knee pain is that it can come on for no apparent reason. This in fact happened to me a few years ago. I had been out at the park doing my regular exercise routine. I had done this routine for the past few years, but for some reason, after this particular mornings exercise, I experienced some sharp pain in my knee as I was climbing up the stairs to get back into my house.

We have all had some aches and pains, and I didnt really think anything of it at first, but this knee pain just seemed to hang -around.

I tried getting a more supportive running shoe- but this didnt help. So I started paying closer attention.

I first took a break from running, then I cut-out squats, then lunges, then something else. But to no avail my knee just seemed to get worse.
