What Is Military Neck
Normally, the curvature of the neck is forwards and appears like the alphabet C from the side. This appearance is called as normal lordosis, and it is important for the movement of the head and supports the weight of the head. Loss of this curvature due to conditions like injuries and poor posture is called military neck or straight neck or cervical kyphosis, as it gives the appearance of a soldier standing straight with chin up, at attention. In case of a significant curvature loss, symptoms like the stiffness of the neck, headache, pain in neck and shoulder may be seen.
Common Complications Of Osteoporosis
Spinal fractures from osteoporosis can lead to a range of complications, such as:
- Back pain at the level of the fracture. Back pain may start gradually or suddenly, and may be severe. Nerve root pain from osteoporosis is less common.
- A hunch in the upper back where vertebrae have fractured and partially collapsed in several places, causing the curve of the spine to change.
- Loss of height due to multiple fractures in the vertebral bodies.
- Loss of mobility and instability during daily activity due to weakening of the bones.
- Respiratory and cardiovascular complications when multiple fractures shorten the torso and compress the abdomen
- Loss of self-esteem, loss of independence, mood changes
- Rarely, neurologic injury
Many fractures occur with no symptoms, or symptoms may not be felt immediately.
Symptoms of a compression fracture may develop suddenly. For example, person may fall and experience a sudden onset of back pain that gets worse while sitting or standing . Pain from a fracture tends to feel better when lying down .
Exercise #2: Strengthening Extensor Muscles
- Stand straight in good posture.
- Place ball behind upper back.
- Keep feet apart and away from wall for good balance.
- Push hard with feet and legs to press back against ball.
- Keep spine, hips and knees in the same position. Only the ankle joints pivot where shown by dot.
- Hold for a slow 5 count and follow with a 2 second rest.
- Repeat until you feel your leg or back muscles tire.
- Slowly increase up to 1520 repetitions.
- Do once every day.
Pointer: As strength increases move feet further away from the wall to push harder. Remember dont let your spine bend.
Conditions That Can Cause Pain And Secondary Osteoporosis
In people with secondary osteoporosis, osteoporosis is itself caused by another, primary condition or by a medication or radiation treatment. Some of these primary conditions can cause pain. Painful conditions that can cause secondary osteoporosis include:
- Multiple sclerosis Nerve pain and muscle spasms
- Rheumatoid arthritis Swelling and inflammation in joints
Fibromyalgia, which causes widespread chronic pain and fatigue, is also theorized to raise the risk for developing osteoporosis.
In people with secondary osteoporosis, getting effective treatment for the primary condition may help reduce overall pain.
Pain Caused By Unrelated Conditions
People with osteoporosis can also experience pain caused or worsened by another, unrelated condition. Having more than one condition makes it more difficult for doctors to diagnose the true source of the pain, but identifying the cause of the pain is necessary for effective treatment.
Other causes of back, neck, or hip pain can include:
- Spondylosis Normal degeneration of the spine that happens with age
- Spondylitis Autoimmune condition causing inflammation of the back, neck, and hips and fusing of vertebrae
- Degenerative disc disease Damage to the discs between vertebrae
- Herniated disc Leakage of gel-like material that fills the discs
- Osteoarthritis Deterioration of cartilage that cushions joints
- Cervical stenosis Narrowing of the spinal canal or the openings through which spinal nerves pass
- Spinal tumor
Reducing The Risk Of Falling
Because osteoporosis causes bones to be thinner and weaker, it is important to reduce the risk of high-impact injuries as much as possible, including falls. There are a few methods that can help reduce the risk of falling:
- Exercise to strengthen muscles and improve balance and coordination.
- Make modifications to home safety, such as by installing a handrail in the shower, using a shower stool, or relocating everyday items to the ground floor to reduce the use of stairs.
- Correct visual impairments that may cause a person to trip and fall.
Additionally, a patient with osteoporosis may work with an occupational therapist for more individualized advice for fall prevention.
Osteoporosis And Your Spine
Your spine is made up of small bones called vertebrae. The picture of the spine shows the different regions of the spine, from the bottom to the top . People with osteoporosis most often break bones in the upper spine. When these bones break, they can cause pain, height loss and stooped or hunched posture, called kyphosis.
What Can I Do To Relieve Neck Pain At Home
Your doctor or physical therapist can recommend steps you can take at home to relieve neck pain. These may include:
- Using heat or ice packs.
- Doing gentle stretches or exercises.
- Taking over-the-counter medicines to relieve pain and inflammation such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
Long-term strategies to reduce neck pain include:
- Quit smoking. Smoking damages bone structure and slows healing.
- Lose weight if you are obese.
- Reduce your stress level. Walk, meditate, get a massage, try a yoga class, exercise.
- Do exercises that strengthen your neck and shoulder muscles.
Primary Osteoporosis With Aging
For most patients, osteoporosis is caused by natural changes to bone mass and strength that come with age. Primary osteoporosis is most notable in women who have gone through menopause, but can affect anyone in advanced age.
Age-related changes to bone mass and bone structure can affect both the spongy interior bone , the hard exterior bone , or both.
How Primary Osteoporosis Develops
As a person ages, the process of bone breaking down becomes faster than bone can be rebuilt . This imbalance leads to lower bone mass and loss of integrity of the bone structure, causing bones to become thinner, weaker, and more susceptible to fractures.
A separate health condition can affect the process of bone growth and diminish bone density, called secondary osteoporosis. In such cases, a health condition or medication directly or indirectly influences bone metabolism, leading to lower bone density and a risk for developing osteoporosis later in life.

Rib Pain Can Be Minor Or Serious
What are the causes of rib pain? Oftentimes, pain under the rib cage is not serious and may be associated with minor conditions like indigestion, gas troubles, or strained muscles.
Other times, the cause of rib pain is more serious, such as appendicitis, pancreatitis, lung cancer, a pulmonary embolism, gallbladder problems, fibromyalgia, or heart attacks and other heart problems.
Treatment for rib cage pain will depend on the cause. It is a good idea to inform your doctor of your rib pain to help determine the cause of the problem with specific testing. In general, an anti-inflammatory, plant-based diet can help improve digestion and reduce inflammation associated with rib cage pain.
Osteoporosis And Spinal Fractures
The spinal column is made up of small bones stacked on top of one another, creating the natural curves of the back. Between the vertebrae are flat, round, rubbery pads that act as shock absorbers and allow the back to flex or bend. Muscles and ligaments connecting the vertebrae allow motion while providing support and stability for the spine and upper body. Each vertebra has an opening in the center and these line up to form the spinal canal. Protected by the vertebrae, the spinal cord and other nerve roots travel through the spinal canal. Nerves branch out from the spinal column through vertebral openings, carrying messages between the brain and muscles. Facet joints align at the back of the spinal column, linking the vertebrae together and allowing for rotation and movement. Like all joints, cartilage covers the surface where facet joints meet.
Vertebrae weakened by osteoporosis are at high risk for fracture. Patients with the disease can suffer a vertebral compression fracture as a result of a fall, or while doing everyday things, such as reaching, twisting, coughing or sneezing. Vertebral compression fractures are not always a result of osteoporosis. However, when osteoporosis is involved, these fractures are often the first sign that the disease has weakened the patient’s skeleton.

When Is Spinal Osteoporosis Serious
In its early stages, osteoporosis does not cause complications with any obvious symptoms such as back pain or instability. If osteoporosis is diagnosed at this stage, through routine screening and diagnostic studies, it is typically not severe and can be managed effectively to delay or avoid fractures.
In some cases, osteoporosis may only be diagnosed once a fracture has occurred. If a person has been diagnosed with osteoporosis and has one or more fractures in the spine or hip, it may be considered severe. Severe spinal osteoporosis can cause significant back or neck pain and disability.

How Does Osteoporosis Cause Kyphosis
In adults, kyphosis usually results from vertebral fractures or compression fractures that come as the result of osteoporosis. These fractures, also called wedge fractures, collapse the bone in the front of the spine and leave the back of the bone unchanged, resulting in a wedge-shaped vertebra. Since the majority of damage affects the front of your spine, the fracture doesnt result in nerve or spinal cord damage.
Because your bones are so brittle from osteoporosis, you can experience a vertebral fracture from activities such as lifting, bending or falling. The more advanced your condition, the less intensity required to cause a fracture. If you have advanced osteoporosis, you can experience a fracture from minor movement involved in coughing, sneezing, or even turning over while you sleep.
Unfortunately, you may not recognize a vertebral fracture when it occurs. Of adults over 50, about one in three women and one in five men will experience osteoporotic fractures. Many times, the pain is regarded as general back pain, muscle strain, or part of the normal aging process. About 66% of all vertebral fractures remain undiagnosed and untreated.
Medical Conditions That Can Cause Fatigue
Certain chronic diseases can increase the risk of osteoporosis and fatigue. Known as secondary causes of osteoporosis, they affect about two-thirds of men, more than 50 percent of premenopausal women, and one-fifth of postmenopausal women.
Cushing’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, multiple myeloma, and leukemia are secondary conditions that can cause low bone density and fatigue. A 2018 study found that living with long-term mental, emotional, or physical stress that taxes adrenal glands has a direct, detrimental effect on bone mass. More than 2,300 members of MyOsteoTeam report experiencing depression or anxiety.
Rare Types Of Osteoporosis
Two other types of osteoporosis occur far less commonly:
- Osteogenesis imperfecta, a group of genetic disorders present at birth that alter the development of collagen in bone, causing bones to break more easily. Effects of this condition range from relatively mild to severe and life-threatening. Other symptoms of mild types include a blue-ish tint in the eyes and early hearing loss.
- Idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis occurs in children during periods of growth, typically between ages 8 and 14.
Specialized care throughout life is typically needed to manage osteoporosis diagnosed in children.
Weak And Brittle Fingernails
Nail strength can signal bone health. But you should also take into consideration outside factors such as swimming, gardening, and other exercises that may affect your nails.
Other than changes in bone density, osteoporosis doesnt usually cause a lot of initial symptoms. Your best bet for detecting it in the early stages is going to the doctor, especially if you have a family history of osteoporosis.
When the bone has deteriorated significantly more, you may start to experience more obvious symptoms, such as:
Unusual Persistent Neck Pain
With a cervical artery dissection, the neck pain is unusual, persistent, and often accompanied by a severe headache, says Dr. Rost. The neck pain from a carotid artery tear often spreads along the side of the neck and up toward the outer corner of the eye. A vertebral artery tear may feel like something sharp is stuck in the base of your skull. If you experience such pain especially if you also have stroke symptoms such as dizziness, double vision, jerky eye movements, unsteadiness while walking, or slurred speech call 911 immediately.
Osteoporosis And Fatigue: Causes And Tips For Management
If you live with fatigue and osteoporosis, your fatigue may be related to side effects of medication, an underlying health condition, or simply a lack of vitamin D not the bone disease itself. Some members of MyOsteoTeam who say theyre tired all the time have also been diagnosed with arthritis, chronic fatigue, underactive thyroid, sleep apnea, and other medical conditions that can cause fatigue.
No matter the root cause, fatigue is a common experience among MyOsteoTeam members. Even after a good nights sleep, Im falling asleep in my chair at 11 a.m., said one member. By 12 noon, I’m so tired, I’ve got to take a nap just to make it to dinner, shared another member.
Physical Methods Of Pain Management For Osteoporosis
There are several options for osteoporosis-related pain management.
Heat and Ice
Heat in the form of warm showers or hot packs, can relieve chronic pain or stiff muscles.
Cold packs or ice packs provide pain relief by numbing the pain-sensing nerves in the affected area. Cold also helps reduce swelling and inflammation.
Depending on which feels better, apply heat or cold for 15 to 20 minutes at a time to the area where you feel the pain. To protect your skin, place a towel between your skin and the source of the cold or heat.
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation
TENS units are small devices that send electrical impulses to certain parts of the body to block pain signals. Two electrodes are placed on the body where you are experiencing pain. The electrical current that is produced is very mild, but it can prevent pain messages from being transmitted to the brain. Pain relief can last for several hours. Some people may use a small, portable TENS unit that hooks onto a belt for more continuous relief.
TENS units should only be used under the supervision of a physician or physical therapist. They can be purchased or rented from hospital supply or surgical supply houses; however, a prescription is necessary for insurance reimbursement.
Braces and Supports
Prolonged inactivity increases weakness and causes loss of muscle mass and strength. Because exercise raises the bodys level of endorphins it may somewhat relieve pain. A regular exercise program helps you:
Osteoporosis Medications That Can Lead To Fatigue
Osteoporosis occurs when the body loses too much bone mass, or doesnt build new bone fast enough, increasing the risk of fractures. Some medications prescribed to promote bone health and bone density can cause side effects that may disturb sleep and promote fatigue.
Many MyOsteoTeam members taking Prolia , an osteoporosis drug given to postmenopausal women with a high risk of bone fractures, reported frequent nocturnal trips to the bathroom. Every night I wake up, sometimes four times, because I need to pee, said one member.
Another woman taking Forteo , a drug that increases bone density and bone strength, got nighttime cramps. Others reported general fatigue from Tymlos . When I was on that therapy for a year, the fatigue doubled, said one member of MyOsteoTeam.
If you suspect your fatigue may be related to a medication prescribed for osteoporosis, talk to your doctor. They can help identify the source of the fatigue and manage any side effects related to osteoporosis medications.
Stretches That Reduce Neck Pain
Just because there is no such thing as osteoporosis in neck or osteoporosis neck pain, this does not lessen the importance of identifying the cause for the neck pain. Maybe you have neck pain because of stress, anxiety or poor posture? Perhaps your bone density test DEXA score is the cause of your anxiety and worry. If that is the case, here are several things you can do to reduce your neck pain:
Solving The Mystery Of Pain In Osteoporosis
Many people with osteoporosis are told by their doctors that the condition does not cause pain. It is true that osteoporosis does not directly cause pain as the bones become thinner. However, painful fractures, the compression of nerves, and muscle spasms can result from the effects of osteoporosis. Unfortunately, these indirect symptoms of osteoporosis can cause intense pain that may develop into debilitating chronic pain.
Bone Loss Before Osteoporosis
The stage before osteoporosis is called osteopenia. This is when a bone density scan shows you have lower bone density than the average for your age, but not low enough to be classed as osteoporosis.
Osteopenia does not always lead to osteoporosis. It depends on many factors.
If you have osteopenia, there are steps you can take to keep your bones healthy and reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis.
Your doctor may also prescribe one of the bone-strengthening treatments that are given to people with osteoporosis, depending on how weak your bones are and your risk of breaking a bone.

What are the symptoms of osteoporosis and kyphosis?
Osteoporosis often termed as a silent disease may not present any clues of bone loss for many years till a fracture occurs that may cause severe pain and disability. Osteoporotic fractures are generally seen in the hip, the spinal joints i.e vertebrae and wrist. Osteoporosis of vertebrae can be risky because it may lead to restriction of day-to-day activities like climbing stairs, bending forward etc. Depending on the location of the fracture, any or all of these symptoms may be seen:

How are osteoporosis and kyphosis diagnosed?
Osteoporosis and kyphosis can be diagnosed on the basis of your medical history, examination and investigations. Bone density test is done to assess the strength of the bones. The central dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry is a special type of x-ray for testing bone density using a small amount of radiation. Investigations like X-Ray, urine and blood tests are also done for supporting the diagnosis.
A bone density test for osteoporosis is usually advised for:
Exercise #3: Chest Raises From Prone
This is a more advanced exercise. Not everyone will be able to do this one. If you can lie on your stomach without difficulty, you can safely try this one.
- Lie on stomach on bed or floor.
- Putting a pillow under stomach is optional and makes it easier to get on stomach and lift head.
- Pinch shoulders back, smoothly lift head and chest and continue to look straight down.
- Hold for a slow 5 count.
- Rest for 2 seconds and repeat until tired.
- Do once every day.
Suggestion: If you can get on your stomach but cant lift your head up, keep trying it. You might eventually start getting your head and chest up, and then youll know your exercises are helping!

Kyphosis And Bone Breaks In The Spine
The bones in the spine are called vertebrae. When they break, they are called vertebral fractures or compression fractures. Breaking one or more bones in the spine can cause sharp back pain that does not go away, or there can be no pain at all. After having several of these breaks, people may start to have a curved spine and lose height. When there is no pain, many people do not know they have broken a bone in the spine. After becoming shorter by an inch or more in one years time, some people realize there is a problem with the spine. Because of height loss and changes in the spine, clothes may start to fit poorly.
The curve in the spine or the backbone that causes it to curve forward and look stopped or hunched is called kyphosis. As more bones break in the spine, the spine becomes more curved. When it is severe, kyphosis is sometimes called a dowagers hump. Other conditions, besides broken bones in the spine, can also cause kyphosis.
For some people, kyphosis causes constant pain. This pain happens when the spine becomes more curved and the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the back are strained and stretched. Sometimes nerves are also pinched.
Severe kyphosis can reduce the space for internal organs. It may also cause the stomach or abdomen to push forward and appear to stick out. As a result, it is harder for some people to breathe or eat, and they may not get enough food and nutrition for their health.
When To See A Doctor
Osteoporosis symptoms can cause pain and discomfort. See a doctor immediately if you are experiencing severe pain, particularly of the back, neck, hip, or wrist. You may have a fractured bone that requires evaluation and treatment.
