In general, when not directly applied to the skin, ice can be used for 20 to 30 minutes. After a 30 minute period, the packs are going to lose the effective level of cold. Place the ice packs or wraps in the freezer for about 45 minutes for it to again reach a therapeutic level for effective application. If the ice therapy packs are cooled for the first time, you should leave it in the freezer for about 6 hours before using. If the packs are going to be stored for a long time defrost them, wipe them clean, dry thoroughly, and store in a freezer bag if possible. The Competition: Common Pain Meds

Do Not Ice Lower Back Or Neck Pain
Wait! What? You shouldnt ice low back pain? The truth is, treating low back pain with ice can make the pain worse. Icing these areas can actually cause the body to feel threatened. In many cases, you will immediately notice that the muscle spasm increases the second you place ice on the injured area. In other cases, you might notice a very unpleasant sensation when the ice is applied.
After a few minutes go by, you will notice that your pain has increased, and the area becomes extremely stiff and difficult to move. While it does not do any permanent damage, it is not a very pleasant experience and you most likely will not try it again.
According to scientific studies, the reason the lower back and neck react in this manner is because they are full of muscular trigger points, or muscle knots. These are common muscle dysfunctions found in the back because this area carries so much of the human weight and is responsible for so many movement functions.

Sciatica is a condition where due to a slipped or herniated disc, the sciatic nerve is pinched or irritated, which results in radiating pain. The pain appears in the lower back, moves to the buttocks, down the legs towards the feet. This condition can be truly disruptive and affect ones normal daily life.

Ice is for fresh injuries, and heat is for stiff, aching muscles. Roughly. But the devil is in the details, and there are a lot of them.
Hasnt icing been myth-busted? Its been fashionable lately to debunk icing.1 The backlash against icing has some merit, and I love to see myths busted of course, but I think in this case its mostly a non-issue. The majority of icing is done for minor pain control, and theres really no problem with that.
Ice is for injuries calming down damaged superficial tissues that are inflamed, red, hot and swollen. The inflammatory process is a healthy, normal, natural process that also happens to be incredibly painful and more biologically stubborn than it needs to be. Do I Use Heat Or Ice For Neck Pain
In pain and not sure if you should grab the ice pack or heating pad? Youre not alone. That simple question on Google currently yields 24 million results.
So, which is it? The general recommendation is to use ice for the first 24 to 48 hours after an injury, which will help reduce swelling. Then, use heat to loosen muscles and improve stiffness.
What does ice do for an injury? It slows the nerve impulses by interrupting the pain-spasm reaction between nerves. It also helps numb sore tissues, providing relief like a local anesthetic. Ice can also reduce damage to tissues, reducing swelling and slowing the inflammation after the injury.
What does heat do for an injury? Heat loosens the muscles and improve stiffness. Heat may be applied with warm showers, hot compresses, or a heating pad.
Whether its cold or heat youre applying to an injury, keep it on for only about 20 minutes at a time, then leave off for at least 40 minutes. Never put the ice or heat source directly against your skin- wrap it in a towel to prevent a burn.

Using Ice For Neck Pain Relief
Ice therapy should be used in most cases where there is an acute injury such as Contusion: which is a bruise without a break in the skin usually caused by a hard blow to a muscle. Strain: which is a tear of a muscle due to overloading forces which can be caused by the sudden contraction when sneezing. Sprain: which is an injury to the ligament of a joint which is forced beyond its normal range of motion such as in a whiplash type neck injury. Using ice for neck pain relief is a natural and effective means to reduce inflammation and speed healing.
To use ice therapy on the neck, an ice bag or a gel pack is available in most drug stores. You can even use a bag of frozen vegetables! Wrap in a towel and apply to the area for 15-20 minutes.
