In addition to having endometriosis and adenomyosis, I also have irritable bowel syndrome, otherwise known as IBS. Many people with endo have IBS as well, as I’ve written about for this site. However, about three years ago, I made a discovery that seems to at least partially help alleviate the very painful cramps I get when I get my period or am experiencing PMS.

How To Use Bentyl 10 Mg/5 Ml Oral Syrup

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually 4 times a day. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

If you are using the liquid form of this medication, carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose. Mix the dose of liquid with an equal amount of water before taking it.

Antacids lower the absorption of dicyclomine. Do not take this medication at the same time as antacids. If you are taking an antacid, take it after meals and take dicyclomine before meals.

The dosage is based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment.

Do not increase your dose or take this drug more often without your doctor’s approval. Your condition will not improve any faster and the risk of serious side effects may increase.

Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

What Ibs Symptoms Does Bentyl Relieve

Bentyl is used to relieve muscle spasms caused by IBS and other symptoms related to these spasms.

The muscles around your colon normally contract to pass feces through your digestive tract. These muscle contractions are usually barely noticeable.

However, people with IBS often experience painful and frequent muscle spasms that cause pain and cramping.

Bentyl can be used as either a short- or long-term treatment option for IBS. It usually helps improve symptoms within hours of taking it. Your doctor may recommend taking Bentyl along with other treatment methods.

Theres limited clinical evidence examining the effectiveness of Bentyl for IBS.

As of , the use of Bentyl was based primarily on one placebo-control study from 1981.

In the 1981 study , researchers gave people with IBS 40 mg of dicyclomine hydrochloride four times per day for 2 weeks.

The researchers found that the participants had less abdominal pain and better bowel movements after taking dicyclomine. However, the majority of the participants also had side effects due to the drug blocking activity of acetylcholine.

In rare cases, some people may develop a severe allergic reaction after taking Bentyl. Those symptoms may include:

  • trouble breathing
  • rash
  • facial swelling

If you have any known medication allergies, its a good idea to alert your doctor before taking Bentyl.

The anticholinergic effects of Bentyl may cause several other unwanted side effects, such as a reduced ability to sweat and drowsiness.

    When To See The Doctor

Bentyl works by relaxing muscles of stomach and intestines and this way it reduces cramping

If your diarrhea, stomach pain, or vomiting are severe or last for a long time, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible. Although they can be considered nuisance withdrawal symptoms by some drug users, they can be troubling enough to derail attempts at quitting, leading to an increased risk of overdose.

Stomach symptoms can be an indication of an underlying, treatable infection, and they can lead to life-threatening dehydration. In an emergency, you can go to an emergency room where an IV drip can be used to quickly replace fluids and electrolytes.

One of the most severe consequences of alcohol withdrawal, called delirium tremens , impacts about 3% to 5% of people who withdraw from heavy drinking. If left untreated, this condition can be fatal.

    Causes Of Withdrawal Symptoms

When drugs or alcohol are used constantly, the brain has to adjust to changes in the functioning of neurotransmitters, the chemicals in the brain that affect the nervous system. When these substances are stopped, it forces the brain and body to have to change again, creating unpleasant physical and mental withdrawal symptoms.

Diarrhea, stomach pain, and vomiting are often experienced by people going through withdrawal from opioids and other drugs. Although this can be a normal reaction by the body, the severity and discomfort you experience can be reduced by correct treatment. Therefore, it is a good idea to talk to your pharmacist or doctor for advice on over-the-counter medications.

However, it is important to be aware that there are other causes of diarrhea and to get the correct diagnosis and treatment. For example, a range of viral and bacterial infections can cause diarrhea, and may be a result of ingesting contaminated food, water, or drugs, or by some sexual activities. Diarrhea can also be a side effect of some drugs.

    Medical Treatments For Withdrawal Symptoms

Withdrawal from substances can be done at home or in a healthcare setting. Quitting substance use is often easier under medical supervision because medications can be used to make the transition easier and less uncomfortable. Different treatments are available for different substances.

    • Alcohol: If alcohol withdrawal symptoms are moderate to severe, you may need to be in a supervised clinical setting. Whether you seek treatment as an inpatient or outpatient, you may be given sedatives to help make the transition to complete withdrawal in a medically safe way. Treatment with B vitamins is also critical for someone who is withdrawing from alcohol, as it can prevent Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome , a set of neurological conditions that result from a thiamine deficiency.
    • Barbiturates: Because of the potential complications from stopping barbiturate use, withdrawal should always take place under medical supervision. You may be given phenobarbital to help make the transition.
    • Stimulants: Treatment for stimulant withdrawal will likely involve psychotherapy but may also include antidepressants or other mood-affecting medications.
