All Creatures Great And Small
Many people might be surprised to learn that acupuncture is also sometimes used on animals. As with people, not all animals respond to the treatment. Likewise, many animals dislike needles so much that it’s not an option. But for some cooperative animals, it works well, saya Henneman: You will see profound relaxation at the time of treatment, or some will have a little check-out moment, and then all of a sudden, they are very energetic.”
When she first started using acupuncture, Henneman says she got a lot of grief from local horse vets. Now, its common for veterinary schools to have an acupuncture specialist on staff.
As with the technique in humans, theres much discussion over where to place the needles, and whether location really matters. If youre familiar with the charts from traditional Chinese medicine showing an outline of the human body with needles jutting out along anatomical markers, veterinary acupuncture uses similar ancient charts.
The technique has its skeptics in both human and animal practices. Needle placement is only one of the contentious issues. Researchers still havent connected the dots between mechanical stimulation of the needle and response to treatment.
How Do I Stop My Hands From Going Numb When I Sleep
Try a new sleeping position, particularly on your side. Avoid laying on your arms under your pillow, which can compress nerves. Make sure your wrists remain unflexed, since flexing can lead to tingling. If you often sleep on your back with your arms overhead, try keeping them next to you to reduce nerve pinching.
What Is Carpal Tunnel And Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
A disorder characterized by tingling, numbness, and pain in the arm and hand, Carpal tunnel syndrome is a widespread condition that affects millions of people around the world each year. The state takes place when any main nerve to your hand, known as a median nerve, gets compressed or squeezed.
As in most cases, carpal tunnel syndrome tends to worsen over time. Therefore, timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment are vital. Initially, symptoms managed with simple methods such as refraining from certain activities or using a typical wrist splint.
However, in case the compression on the persons median nerve persists, it can result in permanent nerve damage and an increase in the severity of the symptoms. For preventing permanent nerve damage, surgery is the final resort. The operation aims to release the pressure on the persons median nerve.

Acupuncture And Related Treatments For Symptoms Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Do acupuncture and related treatments improve symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome in adults?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that may cause pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand. It develops when the median nerve, which stretches from the arm into the hand, is compressed as it passes through a structure called the carpal tunnel in the wrist. A person’s job could be a factor in developing CTS and it can be an additional problem in people with other diseases, such as inflammatory arthritis. CTS can be treated by hand exercises, splinting, pain medicines, and injections. Severe CTS may be treated with surgery. People with CTS sometimes choose acupuncture and related treatments to manage the symptoms of CTS. Acupuncture uses needles to puncture the skin and stimulate acupuncture points on the body. These acupuncture points lie along the meridian, which is thought of as a pathway of energy through the body. Acupuncture-related treatments use different methods to stimulate the acupuncture points. For example, laser acupuncture uses lasers instead of needles.

Decrease Time Spent On A Computer Keyboard
If symptoms worsen when youre using a computer keyboard, take frequent breaks or stop using keyboard entirely if possible.
As an alternative, you can consider placing a soft object such as a small roll pillow or a soft towel under your forearms for reducing the continual pressure being exerted on your wrists by the keyboard while typing.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can be a painful condition that calls for surgery as the last option if the patient fails to respond to conservative treatment and medications.
Numerous proponents of traditional Chinese treatment procedures claim that you should give acupuncture for carpal syndrome a try before resorting to medications, or an invasive sort of treatment such as surgery. D
uring the last couple of decades, there has been a steady increase in the number of patients opting for alternative therapies such as yoga, acupressure, and acupuncture for carpal tunnel syndrome.
Not just for carpal tunnel, acupuncture is widely recommended in several types of research and study guidelines for the treatment and prevention of different chronic pain conditions. However, you should consult an acupuncturist, chiropractor, or physiotherapist for proper examination and treatment of the syndrome and practice these acupuncture techniques under their close supervision.

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when theres pressure anywhere along on the nerve pathways from your neck to your hand. The biggest myth about carpal tunnel is that there is something wrong with my wrist. More times than not, the source of the pain isnt actually in your wrist.
In reality, often the problem comes from poor posture that creates muscle tension in the neck and shoulders. These tight and painful muscles cut off the circulation to the median nerve. The median nerve runs from the inside of your forearm and through a narrow passage into the wrist. This nerve brings sensation and movement to your hands and fingers.
As you can see, if this nerve is compressed anywhere along its path by muscle tension, inflammation, injury to the wrist, or arthritis, you will begin to notice symptoms. Unfortunately, carpal tunnel syndrome diagnoses are on the rise as we spend more and more time each day typing on our laptops. If your workstation is not ergonomically set up, the resulting inflammation in the median nerve can lead to pain.
Left untreated, these mild symptoms can worsen. In serious cases, you could experience severe pain and may even be unable to move your hand at all. Because of the nature of carpal tunnel, simply taking medications for pain doesnt help the problem. Even if you relieve your pain, you might still feel numbness, tingling, or weakness from the nerve compression.
Acupuncture Can Ease Wrist Pain Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Read in app
Acupuncture can relieve wrist pain, and researchers have tracked the brain and nervous system changes that may help explain why.
Scientists randomized 80 people with mild or moderate carpal tunnel syndrome pain caused by nerve compression at the wrist to one of three groups. The first received acupuncture at the wrist and ankle. The second got acupuncture at the wrist alone. And the third received sham acupuncture, using fake needles near the affected wrist, as a placebo. Using functional M.R.I. and nerve conduction tests before and after the procedures, they measured the effect on brain and nerves.
All three groups found relief from pain, but both of the true acupuncture groups showed measurable physiological improvements in pain centers in the brain and nerves, while sham acupuncture did not produce such changes. Improvement in brain measures predicted greater pain relief three months after the tests, a long-term effect that placebo did not provide. The study is in Brain.
Whats really interesting here is that were evaluating acupuncture using objective outcomes, said the senior author, Vitaly Napadow, a researcher at Harvard. Sham acupuncture was good at relieving pain temporarily, he said, but true acupuncture had objective physiological and enduring effects.

Can Acupuncture Cure Carpal Tunnel Pain
Researchers say acupuncture therapy could be useful in treating symptoms and causes of carpal tunnel and other chronic pain ailments.
Acupuncture may be more effective in treating some chronic pain ailments than previously thought.
Researchers in a study in the journal Brain concluded that acupuncture helped relieve pain for people with carpal tunnel syndrome.
The researchers said the acupuncture helped reduce symptoms by remapping the brain.
They added the therapy also provided some healing effects at the source of the pain in the patients wrists.
Vitaly Napadow, PhD, director of the Center for Integrative Pain Neuroimaging, and senior author of the research paper, said his group hopes to do more research on acupunctures effectiveness on carpal tunnel and other chronic pain ailments.
One of the benefits of acupuncture is its so minimally invasive and has such a low-risk profile, Napadow told Healthline.
In this study, 80 people with an average age of 49 were tested.
The volunteers, 65 of whom were women, were divided into three groups.
One group was treated with verum electro-acupuncture at the wrist.
Another group was given the acupuncture therapy in an ankle on the opposite side of their affected wrist.
The third group was given sham acupuncture treatments as a control.
They were each given 16 treatments over eight weeks. The participants were evaluated after the treatments and then reevaluated three months later.

How Does Acupuncture Work
Acupuncture is one of the many practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine , which evolved thousands of years ago. TCM practitioners use various psychological or physical approaches, such as acupuncture and tai chi. Acupuncture is a technique that involves inserting fine pins or needles through the skin. These needles target specific areas called acupuncture points. Acupuncture practitioners, called acupuncturists, perform this technique.

What Acupuncture Is And What It Is Not
Everyone has expectations and cynicism when it comes to medical treatments. A lot of people favor conventional biomedicine because its scientifically proven to work and it works fast.
However, acupuncture has been around for a very long time, with a long history in the east of its clinical efficacy.
Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years. Although there are myths and so-called studies that supposedly shed light on what a sham acupuncture is, the fact remains that this form of traditional Chinese medicine works.
And as far as safety is concerned, there are hundreds of thousands more people who die yearly from medical malpractice than from an acupuncture session gone wrong. Acupuncture benefits outweigh common side effects such as dizziness, fatigue, and soreness.
Here are some conditions that commonly respond very well to acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine treatments.
Does Massage Help With Carpal Tunnel
Massage therapy is an effective way to help relieve CTS-related symptoms and can be used as a preventative measure. Massage therapy can help treat CTS by reducing inflammation, pain, and numbness in the carpal tunnel. This happens by lengthening the muscles and fascia in the neck, shoulders, arms, wrists, and hand.

# 2 Acupuncture For Infertility
Fertility is an issue that many women have to deal with. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , about 6% of married women aged 15-44 in the US find it difficult to get pregnant or carry a baby to full term.
When women have trouble conceiving, the usual route is to take medications such as Clomiphene citrate , gonadotropins, and metformin. But sometimes, the meds dont result in pregnancy.
IVF is often the last resort, but this costs thousands of dollars and does not always guarantee that a woman can conceive once she goes through the process.
Fertility acupuncture as an alternative treatment offers more promising results when it comes to conception. In one study, patients who received acupuncture treatments conceived faster than those who received traditional treatments and went through lifestyle modification only.22.”Those receiving the acupuncture conceived within an average of 5.5 weeks compared to 10.67 weeks for the lifestyle only group.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4868913/×
In a different study, women with polycystic ovary syndrome experienced higher ovulation frequency than the control group.33.”During the study period, ovulation frequency was higher in the acupuncture group than in the attention control group .” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4116535/× Acupuncture helps increase blood flow to the endometrium, readying the uterus for pregnancy.

Electroacupuncture Helps Ease Carpal Tunnel: Study
But experts say finding is preliminary, didn’t include a control ‘sham’ treatment
TUESDAY, June 7, 2016 — Preliminary research raises the possibility that an electrical form of acupuncture could become a useful treatment for the common wrist overuse condition known as carpal tunnel syndrome.
In the study, electroacupuncture helped carpal tunnel patients with long-lasting mild and moderate symptoms when it was used with splints overnight.
“For these patients, electroacupuncture produces benefits in symptoms, disability, function and dexterity,” said study author Vincent Chung. He is a registered Chinese medicine practitioner and assistant professor with The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when a nerve becomes pinched in the wrist, and it causes symptoms like pain, numbness and tingling. Typing and diseases like arthritis can bring on the condition.
It affects an estimated 3 percent of U.S. workers aged 18 to 64, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Older people and women appear to be most vulnerable.
“This is a chronic condition, frequently made worse by continuing job-related injury,” said Dr. John Longhurst, a professor of medicine with the University of California, Irvine.
“Surgery is the final option used after conservative medical treatment is insufficient,” he said, but the condition can recur.
How might electroacupuncture work?
The findings were published June 6 in the CMAJ .
Will Acupuncture Help
Acupuncture is often a successful treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. It aims to decrease the local swelling and inflammation in the carpal tunnel itself, while relaxing the muscles of the forearm. There are several different acupuncture treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome, including local needling, the use of electrical stimulation, moxibustion and distal needling . The technique and treatment chosen by an acupuncturist depends on a persons body type and related circumstances .
Depending on the severity of the symptoms, a person typically receives biweekly acupuncture treatments and often notices an improvement in the first two weeks of treatment. Success with acupuncture depends greatly on a persons ability to decrease or stop any repetitive motion that may exacerbate the condition while undergoing treatment. This allows the pressure on the median nerve to be eliminated without reintroducing it. Otherwise acupuncture will decrease the symptoms but not adequately treat the source. While individual circumstances influence the length of treatment, acupuncture does successfully treat mild to severe symptoms and has no negative or lingering side-effects.
