    • Keep it there for 15 minutes, then remove
    • Allow the skin to cool to a natural temperature, then repeat the process
    • Always look out for any signs of heat burn on your skin and remove immediately if you see or feel anything.

    You might want to try alternating between heat and ice on the lower back if your main sciatica symptom is back pain.

    If you applied ice alone to your lower back, you might get some effective pain relief, but I found that my clients complained of worsening stiffness when they treat their back with just ice.     As a general rule, it is best to apply heat therapy to your rear pelvisthe area where your sciatic nerve roots originate. You feel sciatic nerve pain, numbness, and/or weakness when one or more of these nerve roots become inflamed, irritated, or compressed. The symptoms then travel down your leg along the path of the long sciatic nerve.

    Heat Things Up Or Cool Them Down

    Hot and cold may be opposites, but both can help keep you comfortable. Cold treatment is usually best for an injury that just happened. After about 72 hours, doctors usually suggest switching to heat. Use an ice pack that’s wrapped in a towel or try a heating pad for about 15-20 minutes at a time. Be careful not to burn your skin. 

    Stretches Can Help With Pain From Sciatica

    Gentle stretches for the low back may help relieve the pain and compression. Additionally, stretching tight hamstrings can also make a big difference as tight hamstrings + a tight piriformis can cause some serious sciatic constriction, resulting in pain. When stretching, we recommend moving slowly, avoid fast movements or bouncing and hold the stretch for around 30 seconds to a minute. Stretches can be repeated throughout the day, but if the pain worsens it is crucial that you stop.
