I am not a doctor but I can tell you from my experience that a ruptured disc at L5-S1 was pushing on a nerve which caused pain in my left leg through my butt cheek and pain all the way down to behind my left knee, then caused left side of my foot to being numb. Left untreated can cause nerve damage. I tried all of the over the counter meds I could find, but nothing helped. Have seen a doc or are you self diagnosing? You need a professional to help because problem could be from more than one area. I now take Oxycodone 10/325 3 times a day and get more relief than surgery ever gave me. I hope you find the answer to your problem. Good luck and take care.

Your question about muscle relaxer, I had less spasms with SOMA 350mg

I have seen three doctors they don’t want to understand the pain that I am having and that it is getting worsted daily. Incurred a back injury from coughing. Numb both legs from top of thighs to the bottom of both feet. The whole torso area feels as if its rapped with a band. Severe pain and burning. I can’t find any relief.

I like Flexeril for sciatica pain myself. I am prescribed to take it 1 tablet 2 times a day as needed, but I don’t take it unless I can’t get other methods to calm it down first. Heating pad, oxycodone 15mg laying down etc… Hope this helps. Some like Skelaxin too or Soma, but I prefer the Flexeril… Mary

Never Ignore Sciatic Nerve Pain

I didnt know what it was, of course now we know it was sciatica, but at that time I felt little symptoms just creeping up slowly from the tailbone to the buttocks, later on to the back of the thigh, later on to my knee, my calf down to my ankle, and then finally to the big toe.Never, never, never ignore sciatic nerve symptoms. Itll just keep crawling down your leg all the way down to your toe like it did to me.I never knew what was going to hit me and it was bad.

Some other symptoms came to light were that I was having problems with actually going to the bathroom, bowel movement issues. Of course, I had the foot pain, I had the toe pain, leg pain, and I even had groin pain. When its getting that bad you need to seek help, this is not going go away on its own, you need to be proactive.

When Is Surgery Considered

Spinal surgery is usually not recommended unless you have not improved with other treatment methods such as stretching and medication, your pain is worsening, you have severe weakness in the muscles in your lower extremities or you have lost bladder or bowel control.

How soon surgery would be considered depends on the cause of your sciatica. Surgery is typically considered within a year of ongoing symptoms. Pain that is severe and unrelenting and is preventing you from standing or working and youve been admitted to a hospital would require more aggressive treatment and a shorter timeline to surgery. Loss of bladder or bowel control could require emergency surgery if determined to be cauda equine syndrome.

The goal of spinal surgery for sciatic pain is to remove the pressure on the nerves that are being pinched and to make sure the spine is stable.

Surgical options to relieve sciatica include:

Microdiscectomy: This is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove fragments of a herniated disk that are pressing on a nerve.

  • Laminectomy: In this procedure, the lamina that is causing pressure on the sciatic nerve is removed.

Common Medication Treatment To Help Ease Painful Muscle Spasms May Be Included In Your Spine Care Plan

SIDE EFFECTS & SYMPTOM OF MUSCLE RELAXERS || BACK PAIN RELIEF || BACK INJURY || Life with Jackie

Muscle relaxants are medications that help reduce muscle spasms, which are involuntary muscle contractions caused by a spine-related problem, such as whiplash, fibromyalgia, or low back strain. Often, muscle spasms cause severe pain and may limit your mobility.

Your doctor may prescribe a muscle relaxant to ease muscle spasms, reduce pain, and help your muscles move better. When your muscles move better, it makes other spine pain treatments, such as physical therapy, stretching, and exercise, more effective.Spasms are localized and occur because of a musculoskeletal issue. Photo Source: 123RF.com.

Muscle relaxants treat two conditions: spasticity and spasm. Spasticity is marked by long-term muscle contraction caused by a brain or spinal cord injury. Spasms, on the other hand, are localized and occur because of a musculoskeletal issue.

Prescription muscle relaxants fall into 2 groups: antispastics and antispasmodics.

    • Antispastics are prescribed to treat spasticity caused by neurological disorders, such as cerebral palsy or spinal cord injury.
    • Antispasmodics are used to treat occasional muscle spasms.

While some antispasmodics may treat spasticity in addition to spasms, antispastics should not be used to treat spasms.

    Walkway in Dollywood, Seveirville, TN

I am a roller coaster rider I love roller coasters Ive always love them but wish I had a girl I was very picky about which one I would get on. I would ask the attendant if there were too many curves are too many drops and I will make my decision and throughout the entire time we were there thats what I would do I was seeking the attendant and I would ask ask ask.

Resting on a Black Bear bench at Dollywood

I was very content to just wait for my family as they finish their ride while I was sitting and patting myself on the back because I held out for something I like to do to protect myself. We did do a lot of walking but I also sat many times as to not overdo it. With this plan, I was able to walk the whole park and get on some safe rides. All in all, it went quite well and I was happy at the end of the day.

Have I Recovered From Sciatic Nerve Pain

Not 100%, but I am on the road there, I can feel it so please follow along with me so you dont have to take so many steps and waste so much time on things that might not work. Im still on that recovery track. But I see glimmers of light when I recently could walk around my yard and walk down the street without having to use my husbands arm as a crutch.

I have been truly blessed to have health insurance throughout this journey but I have been without insurance many times in my life before and I would love to use this information to help those people too. Of course, I cannot help everyone not every person is going to react the same to medication or therapies so please always keep that in mind and consult a doctor first.

But if you are like me I was willing to try anything to get rid of this horrible throbbing pain that I felt would never go away.

Please see my other blog posts regarding the therapies that I used and equipment that I purchased to get better or at least to this point in my recovery. Which means being able to walk upright and sit like a normal person!

Hope this blog will help anyone out there searching for ideas to deal with sciatic nerve pain.

Prescription Medications For Sciatica Pain Relief

If OTC medications do not provide relief from your sciatica symptoms, talk to your doctor about prescription medications.

    • They may be prescribed for a short period when OTC medications fail and before more invasive treatments, such as epidural steroid injections, are tried.
    • The use of these medications may be considered controversial among some doctors due to their potential side effects or lack of proven effectiveness.

The dosage is monitored and controlled depending on the type of drug used and the severity of symptoms.

Tips To Use Topical Medication To Relieve Sciatica Pain

Sciatica pain originates in your lower spine and travels down your sciatic nerve into your thigh and leg.

    • When you use topical medication, apply the cream/gel or lidocaine patch to your rear pelviswhere your sciatic nerve roots are located.
    • Treating this area, rather than your thigh or calf where the pain may be more, will help control and numb the pain at its origin and also calm the nearby nerves.

When you experience pain relief after using topical medication, try to perform simple lower back stretches. Stretches and targeted exercises can help prevent sciatica from recurring, by relieving the sciatic nerve compression, strengthening your tissues, and improving the flexibility in your lower back.

My Sciatic Pain Is Almost Unbearable What Can I Do

This article was published more than 8 years ago. Some information may no longer be current.

The question: I’m a 44-year-old male and I’ve suffered on and off from sciatica for many years. Lately, I’ve been experiencing a very painful episode and the muscle relaxant prescriptions I have don’t seem to help. What can I do to reduce the pain?

The answer: Sciatica is the term used to describe pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which exits from the lower vertebral bones and runs from the lower back, through the buttocks and down each leg. When the sciatic nerve is pinched, it can lead to symptoms of pain, burning or numbness.

Often during an episode of sciatica, the common response is to go on bed rest. While this is a natural reaction, prolonged bed rest has been found to potentially increase back pain. Movement allows nutrients to heal the spine and reduces muscle spasms while helping to increase flexibility and improve muscle tone. It’s important to avoid high-impact activities that trigger the pain, but continue with your regular tasks and light exercises. In a small number of cases, if the back pain is so severe that you can’t move, a short period of rest may be helpful but generally no longer than one to two days.

In addition to keeping active, there are a number of self-care options you can try.

Finally, in very rare cases, surgery can be considered. If this is the case, your doctor can refer you to an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spinal surgery.

How Long Did I Personally Use Tizanidine For

Muscle Relaxer Side Effects | What You Should Know

In my case and my particular problem, I used it for 3 weeks. Heres why: I went to so many chiropractors, osteopaths, homeopaths, general practitioners, neurosurgeon, neurologist and after seeing my 4th Chiropractor, he actually got to a point that he just had to say you need to have some kind of pain relief steroid injection or medication so I can be more effective and get you better relief and to recover already.

So after many months of severe sciatica and many therapies to go along with it I finally had someone that was pushing me to do something out of my comfort zone so back to my General practitioner I went and asked her to give me something and thats when she gave me the muscle relaxers and even then I only used it for a little while scared again of medications.

Now only using ibuprofen or Tylenol at this point I went to see my friend who is a trigger point therapist and he gave me the last push I needed: he said to me get your muscle relaxers and start taking them all the time so I can actually get to the muscle thats hurting you because your muscles are so tight there is no way I could get in there and do any pain relieving techniques for you. That was my point of a turnaround, when my friend that knows me well told me that to get going with my recovery I would have to take muscle relaxers and some pain relief medicines. Thats when I started with muscle relaxers and pain relief medication on a consistent every day 24 hours a day ritual.
