Pain And Weight Gain Are Closely Related

Pain Stop Weight Gain Affects Pain | #PainStopClinics

Pain and weight gain are closely related. Carrying excess weight causes a number of health-related issues. Additional pressure on your joints and difficulties with your heart are just a few of these problems. There are few benefits to increasing your numbers on the scale. Gaining weight slowly may allow your body to adjust to the excess strain but gaining it quickly is a shock to all your bodys systems. Joint Pain Weight-bearing joints, such as ankles, knees and hips, are used to supporting a certain load. If your weight increases quickly, say 20 lbs. over a few months, it will cause the joints quite an increase in stress.

Today, one in nine people has back trouble that compromises everyday living, interrupts steady work and tosses a monkey wrench into satisfying relationships . Furthermore, 80% of adults and a growing number of kids get back pain once in a while. Overweight kids are twice as likely as Slim Jims to have early signs of disc disease putting them on track for serious back problems down the road. Why Does Hypothyroidism Cause Joint Pain

    Thyroid hormones impact tissue development

Hypothyroidism can cause musculoskeletal symptoms ranging from general muscle and joint aches to true muscle disease or arthritis. Thyroid hormones play an essential role in the development of many tissues – including the reproduction and growth of bone and cartilage, at the cellular level. Most reported cases of joint pain and symptoms in adult hypothyroid patients involve the knees and hands.

    More than one autoimmune condition

Another possible explanation for symptoms of joint pain with hypothyroidism could be polyautoimmunity, which is the presence of more than one autoimmune disease in a single patient. People with autoimmune thyroid disease are sometimes diagnosed with other autoimmune conditions, too. While the coexistence of autoimmune diseases is not well understood, genetics may play a large role.

Research finds that rheumatoid arthritis is a common coexisting autoimmune disease in people with Hashimoto’s. There appears to be a connection between underactive thyroid and autoimmune conditions that affect your joints, such as rheumatoid arthritis .

    Other possible causes

Joint pain is common in many health conditions. Often, it is caused by some form of injury or trauma to the joint or muscles surrounding the joint. Even being sedentary can take a toll on your joints.

Sciatica pain is a symptom of an underlying medical problem, and weight loss can ease the pain.

Rib Pain Can Be Minor Or Serious

    Pin on Massage~ Scapula pain

What are the causes of rib pain? Oftentimes, pain under the rib cage is not serious and may be associated with minor conditions like indigestion, gas troubles, or strained muscles.

Other times, the cause of rib pain is more serious, such as appendicitis, pancreatitis, lung cancer, a pulmonary embolism, gallbladder problems, fibromyalgia, or heart attacks and other heart problems.

Treatment for rib cage pain will depend on the cause. It is a good idea to inform your doctor of your rib pain to help determine the cause of the problem with specific testing. In general, an anti-inflammatory, plant-based diet can help improve digestion and reduce inflammation associated with rib cage pain.

    Weight Gain Means More Pain

Losing weight can be very difficult when you suffer from chronic pain. Making a few slight changes to your routine, however, may help prevent your condition from worsening.

If you have a chronic pain condition, and youre overweight, you are likely to experience greater pain, more often, than someone who is at a healthier weight. The more you gain, the more your pain may worsen. The good news is: even if pain is slowing you down and contributing to weight gain, there are ways to maintain your current weight and prevent your pain from deteriorating.

Science has shown that pain levels increase as weight increases. Researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the State University of New York at Buffalo looked at the weight and self-reported pain records of more than 5,000 adults age 60 and older. They found that knee, hip, and back pain significantly increases with increased weight as measured by body mass index . Another study, based on a Gallup Organization survey of more than 1 million Americans of all ages, had similar results. Overweight study participants reported 20% higher rates of pain those in the lower level of obesity ranges reported 68% higher rates and those in the most obese groups reported 254% higher rates of pain. The connection between weight and pain was the same for men and women and became stronger with age.

    Common Causes Of Rib Pain

Many cases of rib pain are not serious and resolve with either no or minimal treatment. Other times, rib pain is thought to be a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.

One of the most common causes of rib cage pain is a chest injury or a direct blow to the chest due to traffic collisions, falls, or sports-related contact. This can lead to bruised ribs, broken ribs, pulled muscles, and fractured ribs.

Fractured ribs are cracks or breaks in bones designed to protect the upper body. A fractured rib is also known as a break in cartilage that connects the ribs to the breastbone.

Lets take a look at the many other causes of rib pain.

    Cortisone Injections Around The Shoulder

Rotator cuff exercises to relieve shoulder pain caused by weightlifting

Cortisone injections make up a very important part of the treatment of shoulder injuries. In combination with an active rehabilitation program they may significantly reduced the need for surgery in shoulder impingement syndrome.

Cortisone is a potent anti-inflammatory medication. It was only discovered as recently as 1950 , and has been available in an injectable form since 1951. It acts on both acute and chronic phases of inflammation to reduce both tissue swelling and subsequent scar formation.

Cortisone injections are useful in the treatment of various musculoskeletal conditions, particularly those of acute inflammation , and degenerative joint and tendon conditions.

In the shoulder they are particularly useful in the management of:

    • Rotator cuff disease
    • Adhesive capsulitis
    • Glenohumeral osteoarthritis
    • Acromioclavicular joint disease

Cortisone injections should only be performed in the setting of an appropriate diagnosis based on taking an accurate history, performing a clinical examination and commonly performing investigations. These should include an x-ray as mandatory and may also include an ultrasound or an MRI scan, depending on the indications. They will generally be used after failure of a 4-6 week trial of relative rest, anti-inflammatory modalities and medications and an exercise based physiotherapy program.

The Top 5 Pain Conditions that Benefit from Weight Loss

Unless you live under a rock, you’re probably aware that being obese is not a good thing. It can cause a number of health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. However, what you might not know is that being obese can also cause several kinds of chronic pain. In fact, people who are overweight have a 20 percent higher chance of experiencing chronic pain. Here are the five pain conditions that can result from obesity.

      Low Back Pain

Your spine is the part of your body that holds everything together. One of its primary responsibilities is to carry the weight of the body. If you are overweight, this puts a huge strain on the spine. Over time, this can lead to structural damage or misalignment of the spine. In particular, the lower back is the part of the spine that is most sensitive to this stress. Being overweight also leads to bad posture, which adds even more stress on the low back.

Some painful conditions that can be caused by obesity include sciatica, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis. Additionally, if the spine gets pushed out of alignment, it might put pressure on nearby nerves, causing pain that could radiate through the limbs.

      Shoulder Pain

      Neck Pain

Because weight gain typically happens gradually, you might not even realize that your posture is the problem until it is too late.

Losing Or Gaining Weight After Joint Replacement Affects Long Term Outcomes Study Shows

      Hospital for Special Surgery
While many overweight patients intend to lose weight after joint replacement, a study finds that although some are able to achieve this goal, equal numbers of patients actually gain weight after hip or knee replacement. Patients who lose weight have better joint replacement outcomes in terms of function and activity level two years down the road.

While many overweight patients have the best intentions to lose weight after joint replacement, a study at Hospital for Special Surgery finds that although some are able to achieve this goal, equal numbers of patients actually gain weight after hip or knee replacement. Researchers also determined that patients who lose weight do better in terms of function and activity level two years down the road.

“Our findings represent the first report to present evidence that weight loss is associated with improved clinical outcomes, while weight gain is associated with inferior outcomes, although these results are really not surprising,” said Geoffrey Westrich, MD, senior investigator and director of research, Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement at Hospital for Special Surgery.

More than one million knee and hip replacements are performed in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. .

A total of 3,036 knee and 3,893 hip replacement surgeries were reviewed. Findings:

Common Medications That Cause Joint Pain From Cholesterol Drugs To Asthma Inhalers

Joint pain, back aches, and other musculoskeletal complaints are among the most prevalent health issues out there. When it comes to joint pain specifically , arthritis is the most common cause. But before you blame your achy joints on arthritis, did you know that everyday medications can cause joint pain too? Here are 10 common offenders.

To reduce the risk of bias, author and publication details were removed prior to data extraction. Where available the relevant data , odds ratios , relative risks , confidence intervals and p values) were recorded for each study. Where available, multivariable OR were extracted in preference to unadjusted OR . For studies reporting means and standard deviations, effect sizes and CIs were calculated. According to Cohen , effect sizes were interpreted as 0.2, small 0.5, medium and 0.8, large. Widespread pain was defined as 5 painful joints, which is modeled on the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology . Multi-site pain was defined as > 1 but < 5 painful joints. For those studies investigating multi-site or widespread pain, the differences were calculated between the no pain group and the multi-site / widespread pain group. Meta-analysis was performed where more than one study reported on the same parameter, grouped by widespread or single-site pain location. Only the gender-specific sample size was used when entering gender-stratified data into the meta-analysis.

Why Weight Gain Can Increase Back Pain

If youve noticed a correlation between weight gain and increased development of back pain, youre not alone in your discovery. As a patient gains weight, they tend to develop more aches and pains in various parts of their bodies, especially their lower backs. Ive always wondered why this is the case, and what exactly the correlation is between the two. Now that Ive read a great post by Chiro Nexus that examines the association between weight and back pain, Id like to share what I learned with you, so our understanding of this issue becomes a little clearer.

As it turns out, the main factor behind the back pain and aches that obese and overweight patients tend to experience lies in the height of a patients spinal discs.

In patients who are clinically obese, there is an actual loss of height in the spinal discs that occurs in certain areas of thelumbar spine, also known as the lower back, area of the body. When a discs height has been reduced, you can be sure that this means that there has actually been deterioration within the cushion of the spinal column. This can allow a disc to bulge or protrude in a manner that creates stiffness, pain, and immobility in the area. There is often a correlation between obesity and reduced spinal disc height, which more than explains the issues faced by many overweight patients today.

Obesity And Lack Of Exercise Linked To Chronic Pain

      By Eric Schultz, Reuters Health

      4 Min Read

NEW YORK – It may not be surprising, but people who exercise at least one hour per week have a lower risk of troublesome back, neck, and shoulder pain, a new study shows.

The new evidence supports the possibility that obesity and physical inactivity play a role in a persons risk of developing chronic pain in those areas, said study co-author Dr. Paul Mork, of Norwegian University of Science and Technology in an email to Reuters Health.

Mork and colleagues followed more than 30,000 adults who participated in a large Norwegian health study. They recorded participants body mass index – a measure of weight related to height – at the start of the study, as well as how often they exercised, and then tracked them over the next 11 years.

The authors divided the participants into four categories based on how often they exercised, and four categories based on their BMI. They also looked at how many people in each category developed chronic neck, shoulder, and lower back pain.

Overall, 1 of every 10 people in the study developed lower back pain, and nearly 2 of every 10 developed shoulder or neck pain.

After taking into account participants age, BMI, whether or not they smoked, and whether they did manual labor at work,

You Think Obesity Only Damages Legs Think Again Shoulders Are Suffering Too

Obesity is linked to many different health problems, some of them are related to bones and joints. When you think about obese person, you automatically imagine his legs suffering greatly from all the weight they have to carry. However, did you know that obesity causes problems with upper limbs as well?

Scientists from the University of Helsinki conducted a study and found that obesity is linked to upper limb pain and upper extremity soft tissue disorders. Tendon disorders in upper limbs can cause extreme pain and disability to a degree. Scientists are not sure about the causes of these conditions, but now they have a clue. Researchers from the University of Helsinki say that obesity and diabetes can be linked to the prevalence of tendon disorders in the upper limbs.

Scientists performed experiments with animals and some tests with human tissue. They found evidence of inflammation in tendons, suggesting that pro-inflammatory cytokines play a role in upper extremity soft tissue disorders. But then scientists started thinking maybe fatty tissue is somehow involved in it? After all, it is secreting cytokines and adipokines, which have not been studies that much. Of course, obesity plays a major role in determining levels of cytokines and adipokines, but do obese people have more problems with upper limbs than usual?
