Arthritis Warning To Women Who Wear High Heels
Women who wear high heels or badly-fitting trainers could be putting themselves at risk of arthritis, experts are warning.
The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists said the UK could be facing an “arthritis crisis” due to increasing levels of obesity and poor footwear.
The most common form of the condition, osteoarthritis, causes pain and stiffness in the joints and affects at least eight million people in the UK.
The condition is more common in women.
A poll of 2,000 people for the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists found that a quarter of women wear high heels every day or “frequently”.
But experts warned high heels can alter the body’s posture and increase pressure on the foot, ankle and knee joints, increasing the risk of osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis is caused by stress to the cartilage and can result from injury or from general wear and tear on the joint.
The poll also found that 77% of both men and women do not wear shoes designed specifically for the sport they are doing.
This can cause injury and stress on the joints, increasing the risk of the debilitating condition.

“Your weight plays a major role in knee pain,” says Bush-Joseph. “If you walked around all day with a backpack that had a 10-pound weight in it, you would feel how achy your back, hips and knees are at the end of the day. That shows you the impact extra weight can have on your joints.”
With each step people take, two to four times their body weight is transmitted through the knee joint, according to Bush-Joseph. Thus, the more you weigh, the harder the impact is on your knee joint.

According to a recent study published in the Journal ofOrthopaedic Research, wearing 3.5-inch heels or higher could lead to prematurely aged knee joints and increase a womans risk of developing osteoarthritis.
High heels have been known to cause aches and pains, including lower back problems and muscle spasms. Extended wear of high heels leads to the continual bending of the toes into an unnatural position that can cause complications, from ingrown toenails to irreversible damage to leg tendons. This is particularly frightening news for the one in 10 women who wear high heels at least three days a week, according to the American Osteopathic Association , with a third of these women falling while wearing them.
A team of researchers from Stanford University Medical Center sought to examine the effects of high heel wear and increased weight on the knee during walking with 14 healthy female volunteers. To compare gait parameters between the shoes, added weight, and walking style of speed, the women wore different pairs of shoes: flats, 1.5-inch heels, and 3.5-inch heels. Heavy vests that increased their body weight by 20 percent were also tested on the women while they wore the assigned shoes.

Check the sole. Firm midsoles help reduce overpronation a type of gait common in people with low arches.
