Mr G complained that a doctor at the Trust prescribed him an excessive dose of vitamin D. He said that he consequently suffered symptoms from the toxicity of this medication, which led to deterioration in his mental health. He had to give up his job and this consequently had severe financial implications for him.

Symptoms And Diagnostic Testing

During the early stages of osteomalacia, patients may have no symptoms, although some signs may be seen on x-rays or other diagnostic tests .2 As the condition worsens, symptoms develop . Blood and urine tests often detect abnormal levels of vitamin D and the minerals calcium and phosphorus in cases of osteomalacia caused by vitamin D deficiency or by phosphorus loss.2 A serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level should be taken in any individual with limited or no sun exposure, decreased vitamin D intake, or unexplained muscle weakness or pain.1 Levels of 25D represent body stores of vitamin D and correlate with signs and symptoms of vitamin D deficiency.8 In healthy individuals, levels are 25 to 40 ng/mL vitamin D insufficiency is distinguished from vitamin D deficiency .1,8

How To Take Calcium With Colecalciferol

  • Before you start this treatment, read the manufacturer’s printed information leaflet from inside your pack. It will give you more information about calcium and colecalciferol, and will also provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you may experience.
  • Take calcium with colecalciferol tablets/sachets exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you to. It is usual to take one or two doses each day, preferably after meals. If you are taking one dose a day, try to take your doses at the same time of day each day – this will help you to avoid missing any doses. If you are taking two doses a day, take one in the morning and the other in the evening.
  • Some tablets should be swallowed whole without being chewed other tablets must be chewed before being swallowed. Preparations of calcium and colecalciferol supplied in sachets and soluble tablets need to be dissolved in a glassful of water before they are taken. Read the label on the preparation carefully to find out what you should do, and if you are still unsure, ask your pharmacist for advice.
  • If you do forget to take a dose, do not worry, just take your next dose when it is due. Do not take two doses together to make up for a forgotten dose.

Effect Of Vitamin D Toxicity

Consuming abnormally large amounts of vitamin D might lead to stomach cramps and pain. One of the major side effects of vitamin D toxicity is an upset of your body’s natural fluid balance, and this imbalance can affect your digestive tract. Many patients with vitamin D toxicity develop constipation and dehydration, both of which can cause abdominal discomfort and bloating, which can lead to stabbing pain in your abdomen and stomach cramps. If you develop stomach cramps after taking a vitamin supplement containing vitamin D, stop taking the supplement and visit your doctor.

Blood Tests And Monitoring

Most people don’t have their vitamin D level checked and can start colecalciferol safely without having a blood test. Your doctor will assess your risk of being vitamin D deficient , and may prescribe colecalciferol if you are at higher risk. It is also not necessary have vitamin D levels checked while you are taking colecalciferol, as it can be safely given without this monitoring.

Standing apart from the various other essential nutrients, vitamin D was spotlighted recently as having special therapeutic potential. This has important implications for the management of chronic musculoskeletal pain and fatigue syndromes.

During this past June 2008, news-media headlines heralded recent clinical research that revealed benefits of vitamin D for preventing type 1 diabetes,1 promoting survival from certain cancers,2 and decreasing the risks of coronary heart disease.3 Overlooked, however, was the traditional role of vitamin D in promoting musculoskeletal health and the considerable evidence demonstrating advantages of vitamin D therapy in helping to alleviate chronic muscle, bone and joint aches, and pains of various types.

Although further research would be helpful, current best evidence demonstrates that supplemental vitamin D can help many patients who have been unresponsive to other therapies for pain. Vitamin D therapy is easy for patients to self-administer, well-tolerated, and very economical.

Associations Of Vitamin D And Pain

Vitamin D in Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain. From the perspective of vitamin D involvement in musculoskeletal pain, the process is presumed to begin with a lack of circulating calcium due to inadequate vitamin D, and this sets in motion a cascade of bio-chemical reactions negatively affecting bone metabolism and health. Even mild hypocalcemia results in an elevation of parathyroid hormone that can diminish bone density and/or more severely affect bone architecture .35,36

The effect relating more closely to musculoskeletal aches and pains is that increased PTH levels also impair proper bone mineralization causing a spongy matrix to form under periosteal membranes covering the skeleton. This gelatin-like matrix can absorb fluid, expand, and cause outward pressure on periosteal tissues, which generates pain since these tissues are highly innervated with sensory pain fibers.27,44,59

This dysfunction of bone metabolism is proposed in the literature as an explanation of why many patients with vitamin D inadequacies may complain of dull, persistent, generalized musculoskeletal aches, pains, and weakness.20 Therefore, experts recommend that vitamin D deficiency and its potential for associated osteomalacia should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain, muscle weakness or fatigue, fibromyalgia, or chronic fatigue syndrome.27

In the September 25 issue, we talked about how vitamin D possibly can help ward off COVID- 19 virus and lessen its severity if you do get it, according to a Healthline newsletter article by Franziska Spritzler. The report prompted more questions about the signs of a vitamin D deficiency. Again, we referred to Healthline for an article by Spritzler, a registered dietician, about the problems such a deficiency can cause.

Here are eight signs and effects of a Vitamin deficiency, as summarized by her.

1. Getting sick oftenIf you often become sick, especially with colds or the flu, low vitamin D levels may be a contributing factor. Studies have shown a link between a deficiency and respiratory tract infections like colds, bronchitis and pneumonia.

2. FatigueA vitamin D deciency is one often overlooked cause of fatigue, although there are others. Taking supplements may help improve energy levels.

3. Bone and back painVitamin D helps maintain bone health in several ways, so low levels may cause pain in your back lower back and bones. For one, vitamin D improves your bodys absorption of calcium. In one study, people with vitamin D deficiency were nearly twice as likely to experience bone pain.

7. Hair LossHair loss or alopecia is often attributed to stress, certainly a common cause, but severe hair loss may also be caused low vitamin D levels.

Whats The Best Way To Make Up For A Vitamin D Shortfall

An average adult needs 100-200 IU of Vitamin D daily. While doctors do recommend supplements and injections to boost Vitamin D levels in the body, its important to know that spending time in the sun is the best way to beat the shortfall. Spend a minimum of 15 minutes outdoors in the morning, from 8 am until noon. Exercise or walk during this time, wearing light coloured clothes, to gain full benefit of sun exposure.

While the number of foods that contain Vitamin D are few, remember that without the help of fat, it cannot be absorbed or utilised in the body. So following the right diet is important. These are some foods you can choose from daily:

  • A 200-300 ml glass of milk
  • Two 50 g pieces of oily fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines
  • 30 g serving of whole soya beans or dried beans like rajma, chana
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 30 g serving of mushrooms

These simple guidelines will ensure your Vitamin D levels remain in check and will keep those scary symptoms at bay.

Should Everyone Stop Vitamin D

Could vitamin D supplements treat IBS?

It’s important to put this new study into context. It didn’t look at babies and children under 5, so does nothing to undermine the current Public Health England guidance that they, along with pregnant women, should take a daily supplement. People who are at risk of vitamin D deficiency because they cover up for religious reasons or don’t get outside at all should also continue to take supplementation.

In addition, this study was only looking at the impact of vitamin D on bone health. In recent years, we’ve discovered that vitamin D regulates at least 1,000 genes in the body – affecting blood vessels, immune system, muscle strength and more. Tiredness and muscle pains are the most common symptoms, but low levels have been linked to an increased risk of depression, heart disease and even multiple sclerosis.

As yet, there haven’t been any large scale studies looking at whether taking a vitamin D supplement, if you’re at risk of deficiency, protects against any of these. But vitamin D at the recommended levels doesn’t appear to have any adverse side effects: so if Vitamin D supplements does offer any protection at all, the risk: benefit ratio is likely to come down in favour of taking them.

Can You Overdose On Gummy Vitamins

It is possible to take too many gummy vitamins, but often this does not warrant medical attention.

Excess Vitamin D And Calcium

Some of the side effects of vitamin D toxicity are due to and/or exacerbated by the fact too much vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia, or when blood levels of calcium are too high. That’s because vitamin D facilitates the absorption of calcium.

If you experience any side effects of vitamin D toxicity, McNeely recommends stopping your supplement and avoiding calcium-rich foods like dairy, which can contribute to hypercalcemia. In most cases, that’s all the treatment that is needed. Yet, some with hypercalcemia might also need IV hydration.

Once treatment is initiated, most people should start to feel better, but it may take awhile. For example, a 2011 case report of two people who took 1,000 times the recommended daily dose of vitamin D found that they had elevated calcium levels for a year, even after stopping supplementation and were experiencing symptoms. Though, after a year, their symptoms resolved and they had no long-term health consequences.

How Is Vitamin D Deficiency Treated

The goals of treatment and prevention are the sameto reach, and then maintain, an adequate level of vitamin D in the body. While you might consider eating more foods that contain vitamin D and getting a little bit of sunlight, you will likely be told to take vitamin D supplements.

Vitamin D comes in two forms: D2 and D3. D2, also called ergocalciferol, comes from plants. D3, also called cholecalciferol, comes from animals. You need a prescription to get D2. D3, however, is available over the counter. It is more easily absorbed than D2 and lasts longer in the body dose-for-dose. Work with your doctor to find out if you need to take a vitamin supplement and how much to take if it is needed.

Youre Overloading On Irritating Vitamins

That’s 75 milligrams of vitamin C, 15 milligrams of vitamin E, and 18 milligrams of iron, according to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements, so make sure to stick within the guidelines unless a doctor told you to do otherwise. The caveat: Sonpal points out that some people will experience issues regardless, due to individual sensitivities.

Definition Of Functional Chronic Constipation

All selected patients were inquired, before, for any possible secondary causes of functional chronic constipation, including alarm features, lifestyle factors and medical treatments and we also identified the response to previous treatment about constipation symptoms, by interviewing patients. Then, they were considered affected by functional chronic constipation only when they showed a frequency of evacuation less than twice a week with increased stool consistency. All the selected patients underwent blood tests, colonoscopy, nutritional assessment , stool frequency diary, LBT, GBT, wireless motility testing, radiopaque markers studies, and when required, tests for pelvic floor dysfunction, and psychological tests exploring patient√Ęs quality of life.

Accordingly, when not eligible, patients were excluded :1): 152 consecutive subjects affected by functional chronic constipation with intestinal motility disorders met the eligibility criteria, along with 150 healthy subjects. Patients and controls in each group were first randomly sampled from the pool of available individuals and, then matched for age, sex and BMI, using MatchIt. This analysis resulted in 86 patients and 86 matched controls that were enrolled for the study. Our patients did not receive any pharmacological treatment before all evaluations.
