Ways To Lower Your Risk

Do Statins Cause Muscle Pain? || HealthspanMD

There really isnt a way to prevent side effects however, there are some steps you can take.

  • Notify all healthcare providers of any medications you are taking, including any over-the-counter products and herbal remedies. Sometimes, these products can interact with your cholesterol medication and increase your risk of experiencing certain side effects.
  • Keep your medical appointments. When first starting your cholesterol-lowering medication and later at periodic intervals, your doctor will want to monitor you for side effects and to make sure that the cholesterol drug is working properly. He or she will usually perform a physical exam, check your cholesterol levels and do other tests to ensure that you are healthy.
  • If you are having side effects, try to keep a log of these reactions and when you are experiencing them. Is the side effect occurring immediately after you take the drug? Is it happening only when you take it with your blood pressure medicine or another drug? Is the side effect constant or happening only during certain times of the day? This information will help your physician decide whether or not to modify your dose or switch you to another medication.
  • Be honest with your physician if you are experiencing side effects that you cannot tolerate. By letting him or her know, he or she can adjust or change your medication. This will help keep your cholesterol within a healthy rangewithout you being miserable in the process.

It Is Quite Understandable To Have Questions When You May Need To Take A New Medicine

Statins are the most widely used medicine to lower cholesterol and they have been around for a long time, but there have been a lot of news stories about them which can be confusing.

Statins have been around for over 30 years and have been prescribed to millions of people in the UK. They should only prescribed when there is a real clinical need. Stopping taking them can lead to serious problems.

Do statins work?

There are many scientific studies which support the use of statins in protecting against diseases of the heart and blood vessels .

The Cholesterol Treatment Trialists Collaboration , which included more than 170,000 people, showed the benefits for individuals who are prescribed statins. Statins were clearly shown to lower LDL cholesterol levels.

For every 1mmol/L drop in LDL cholesterol there was also an important drop in a patients 5-year risk of CVD.

The study showed the reductions in risk of all major cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes by 21%.

What side effects are there?

Most people experience no side effects when they take a statin and most take them every day without any problems. Side effects can occur with all medications, and the most commonly reported side effects of a statin are muscle aches and pains.

What Are The Different Types Of Fiber

Types of fiber can be categorized in several ways, for example, by their source. The most common natural sources of fiber include fruits and vegetables as well as wheat or oat bran. These fibers are most likely to cause flatulence. Fibers used medicinally to treat constipation include psyllium seed, synthetic cellulose , and calcium polycarbophil. Psyllium and methyl cellulose do not increase the production of gas however, they still may result in the sensation of bloating. This may be due to an effect of these fibers that slows the transit of gas through the intestine.

The different sources of fiber should be tried one by one. The fiber should be started at a low dose. The dose should be increased every 1-2weeks until either the desired effect on the stool is obtained or troublesome bloating orflatulence supercedes. If bloating or flatulence occurs, the dose of fiber can be reducedfor a few weeks, and then the higher dose can be re-instituted. If bloating or flatulence remains a problemand prevents the dose of fiber from being raised to a level thataffects the stool satisfactorily, it is time to try a different source of fiber.

How A Low Fiber Diet Helps Constipation

Despite what the USDA food pyramid may be telling you eating a particular kind of LOW fiber diet saved my life, and it might save yours.

In 2009, out of the blue I started experiencing weird bowel and GI issues. I noticed that I was bloated everyday, began having abdominal pain, and suddenly was finding myself chronically constipated .

As a person who ate healthy my entire life who ate lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats I was pretty perplexed I mean, my diet was perfect, so what was going on?

After consulting with nutritionists, doctors, GI specialists, and many alternative practitioners , I learned an interesting truth: particularly for those with bowel issues, much of what were taught about fiber is apparently un-true. Whats more, many of the claims about lowering disease or colon cancer risk are exaggerated.

that will show you exactly what to eat and what not to eat to improve IBS and constipation.

Is Stomach Pain Related To Pravastatin

Guest over a year ago

I started taking pravastatin about a month ago and even though I didnt experience any of the usual statin side effects like muscle or joint pain and tenderness, I still feel this medication is making my stomach issues worse, Im now at the point where Id like to just throw whats left of this med and continue with my life.

I had chronic gastritis issues which I had pretty well under control with ranitidine and watching what I eat. But ever since I started taking pravastatin my acid reflux is back, no matter what I eat and Im having almost constant stomach pain now. Any idea on how to deal with stomach pain on pravastatin?

if pravastatin is causing you this much problems, then the best thing you can do, especially if your cholesterol levels are still high, is to go back to your doctor and talk about alternatives to pravastatin.

There are several other statin medications which might suit you better and there are also natural alternatives such as red yeast rice which can help you lower your cholesterol together with better diet and physical activity.

Dr Sarah Jarvis Says:

Solutions for Muscle Aches Caused by Statins

Unfortunately, all drugs can cause side effects for some people, and statins are no exception.

In the short term, the most common side effects are related to your digestive system – bloating, diarrhoea, tummy pain, etc. These usually settle within a few weeks and can often be reduced by starting on a lower dose and increasing as the side effects settle.

For instance, with simvastatin, while the standard dose is 40 mg, I usually tell my patients to take half a tablet for a few weeks and then increase to a whole tablet once any side effects have gone. In the longer term, muscle and sometimes joint aches are probably the most troublesome side effect – they may affect up to one in ten people taking statins and they tend to be more common and more severe with higher doses. The maximum dose of atorvastatin is 80 mg and the minimum is 10 mg, so you are on a fairly high dose.

The biggest benefit from taking a statin comes from the initial dose – you don’t get a doubling of the reduction in your cholesterol by doubling the dose. In fact, every doubling of the dose of statin only reduces LDL cholesterol by a further 6%, compared to a reduction of up to 40% with the first 10 mg dose. If your side effects are having a significant impact on your life, something clearly needs to be done.

How To Counteract Too Much Fiber

What can you do if you overeat fiber?

If you have symptoms of consuming too much, then the most important ways to counteract them are

  • STOP fiber intake until the condition subsides: consuming more fiber when there is a large amount still undigested will worsen the problem.
  • Drink lots of water adequate hydration will help with the digestion process.
  • Do some light exercise such as walking: exercise and movement are known to help improve constipation and speed digestion up.

Statin Side Effects Can Often Be Overcome: Study

By Genevra Pittman, Reuters Health

4 Min Read

NEW YORK – Most people who stop taking cholesterol-lowering statins – because of side effects or for another reason – are able to restart the same drug or a similar one without lasting problems, a new study suggests.

Thats important because for people who need statins, quitting them for good increases the chance of serious heart problems, researchers said, so doctors and patients should think carefully before letting milder reactions lead them to give up on the drugs altogether.

Its really common that patients hear from their friends or read on the Internet that there are all these side effects and they say, Ill never take a statin again, said Dr. Alexander Turchin, who worked on the new study at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston.

But most side effects are not an absolute contraindication, he told Reuters Health. There might be a way around it, so its really worth giving it at least one more try.

About one-quarter of U.S. adults age 45 and older take statins to protect against heart attacks and strokes. The drugs are especially recommended for people with diabetes or a history of cardiovascular problems.

They run anywhere from $11 to more than $200 per month.

Side effects of statins include muscle pain, nausea and gas and liver dysfunction. Some studies suggest the rate of side effects may be as low as 5 to 10 percent, but others have found muscle problems alone among more than one in five statin users.

Start By Eating Lower

If youre already feeling some discomfort, avoid taking any further fiber-based laxatives or eating any high fiber foods until you feel some relief. Gastrointestinal irritants such as caffeine, fatty foods, and spicy foods can further aggravate your already distressed stomach. High fiber foods should also be avoided since they increase stool bulk. Try eating a bland and low-fiber diet until your digestive system has recovered. If youve been deliberately introducing high fiber foods for health reasons, discomfort is your bodys way of asking you to go a bit slower. It helps if you consume fiber-rich foods throughout the day instead of all at one meal.

Will Statins Increase My Risk For Diabetes Or Complicate My Existing Diabetes

This risk is true to some extent, but its wildly exaggerated. In fact, there are good data to show that people who have problems with their blood sugar or who have diabetes benefit most from statins. Even though their blood sugar may go up slightly, the added risk is significantly offset by the reduction in heart disease risk that a statin can provide. If youre already at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, or if you have prediabetes, you may monitor your blood glucose more closely after starting a statin. But exercise and weight loss have been shown to lower the risk of developing diabetes in those with borderline blood glucose levels, regardless of statin use.

Statin Drug And Food Interactions

Some foods and medications donât mix well with statins and can make side effects worse:

  • Grapefruit juice, which has chemical that can change the way your body breaks down statins
  • A drug for irregular heart rhythms called amiodarone
  • Gemfibrozil , a cholesterol drug
  • Protease inhibitors, a type of HIV medication that includes saquinavir and ritonavir
  • Some antibiotic and antifungal drugs, such as clarithromycin and itraconazole
  • Certain medications, such as cyclosporine, that lower your immune system activity

There are other medications that can cause problems if you take them with statins. You should tell your doctor about all over-the-counter or prescription drugs, herbal supplements, or vitamins that you use.

Too Much Fiber Doesnt Help With But Cause Constipation

In conclusion, these facts contradict the conventional wisdom on dietary fiber, digestion, and constipation.

However, this is not a new insight. After all, the general perception of a healthy diet still demonizes saturated fat or salt, for example, even though science has long proven otherwise.

As researchers have shown us, it isnt easy to get a big bulky mass through a narrow passage.

Since fiber, in particular, increases the volume of stool, it cant relieve constipation quite the opposite.

But this, too, probably remains a sticky myth for many more years.

Muscle Pain From Statins

If one ever experiences chest pain as a side effect from a statin, this drug would be affecting the muscles in the chest, rather than the heart itself.

Thus, any chest pain from a statin is not angina.

Patients usually describe their muscular symptoms as weakness, tiredness or soreness, says Dr. Quesada.

This pain is usually located in the extremities in places such as the shoulders or thighs.

The discomfort is not always related to activity, and it does not improve with rest.

It is unlikely for this pain to be present in the muscles covering the chest.

Statins and muscle pain: 6 TIPS to STOP PAIN !

Some Lipitor patients report various types of muscle injuries after taking the drug. Although the likelihood of muscle disease is minimal with statins alone, researchers determined the risk is substantially elevated among patients who take statins at the same time as other medications such as certain antibiotics, antifungals and treatments for HIV and hepatitis C.

Lipitor can cause serious muscle problems that can lead to kidney problems, including kidney failure, according to the drug label. You have a higher chance for muscle problems if you are taking certain other medicines with Lipitor.

Should I Stop Taking Statins If I Have Leg Pain

Many patients have heard of a possible connection between statins and leg pain. So, if they start a statin and suffer any kind of pain, they may want to stop the medication. On the one hand, that may be the safest approach. If muscle symptoms are building up, avoiding more severe symptoms is logical.

On the other hand, when symptoms are more mild, stopping the medication may not be the safest thing to do. First of all, it turns out that people who do not know of the possibility of pain, actually report less pain. This is an example of a nocebo effect. Also, long-term benefit of statins are very high for certain people. For example, in patients with peripheral artery disease. Stopping to take them, and neglecting to treat elevated cholesterol could have serious long-term effects. Finally, a certain percentage of patients in clinical trials who took placebo also developed muscle pains. This really muddies the waters, I think.

Another important point to make is that muscle pains with statins might be a sign of another medical condition. For example, hypothyroidism. This is why it is important to work with your physician to try and identify the cause of your symptoms.
