Can Sitting On Your Couch Cause Aches And Pains

What causes neck pain with headache? – Dr. Sanjay Panicker

Bethaney Wallace on 5th Feb 2014

Sitting on the couch or the idea of it is about as American as it can get. Whether relaxing after a long day at work, catching up with an old friend, or tuning into your favorite shows, its common to do so while sitting on the couch. And why not? Its comfortable, its cozy, and often a focal point of the room. Couches also point at TVs, they draw folks in for conversation, and its a popular way to tie a room together. Its simply a part of the way we live.

But what if that same beloved hobby, sitting on a favorite piece of furniture, is causing aches and pains? Believe it or not, your couch, the same one on which you spend so much time, can contribute to muscle pain. If not properly supporting your body, the couch can do far more harm than good. Like displacing your weight, or putting unnecessary pressure on the spine or hips. Though comfortable at the time, a worn-out couch can lead to pain, poor posture, and underlying medical causes. And the longer a sagging couch is used, the more severe its effects can become.

Theres also plenty to be said for the way you sit on the couch. Resting without neck support, slumping ones shoulders, or sitting lopsided for hours on end can do equal amounts of damage on their own. Even if the couch is proper condition. Which is why its important to consider posture and length of sitting time should pains or aches begin to take place.

Characteristics Of Visual Disturbances Reported By Subjects With Neck Pain

People, perhaps like yourself with visual disturbance will usually report on many problems that this condition is causing them. It is usually not limited to one aspect of vision.

In their 2014 paper: Characteristics of visual disturbances reported by subjects with neck pain, Researchers at The University of Queensland wrote in the journal Manual Therapy of the most difficult to treat and manage visual disturbances in their patients with neck pain.

  • The most prevalent symptoms that they found in the patients of the study were:
  • patient found that they had to concentrate to read and
  • patient found that they had sensitivity to light .
  • Lesser prevalent but still impacting many patients were:
  • double vision and
  • The most troublesome symptoms were
  • need to concentrate to read
  • visual fatigue
  • and sensitivity to light
  • Lets do some simple definitions before we proceed.

    • The vestibular system is the bodys sensory system that regulates balance and spatial orientation .
    • It sits in the inner ear and works by adjusting fluid levels that act as the balance mechanism.
    • In human beings, we set our awareness of our place in space by using the ground as the constant place of orientation. We can keep our balance when we walk because we understand the ground is the constant and our vestibular system makes constant involuntary adjustments to keep things steady.
  • The vestibulo-ocular reflex and the cervico-ocular reflex work in conjunction with the optokinetic reflex .
  • One more definition:

Treatment Of Neck And Arm Pain Left Side

Depending on the underlying cause of the pain in your neck and arm, the first line of treatment may include adjusting your activities and restricting your neck or arm for some time. For many causes of neck and arm pain, hand-to-hand therapy, prescription exercises, and therapeutic massage effectively reduce pain, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.

    1. Surgery

In those patients where non-functional measures are not successful, surgical interventions provide a good option. Surgical intervention for cervical radiculopathy can be through the front or back of the neck, or the front and back of your neck.

Several factors will be considered in determining the type of surgery performed. These will include the exact area of any compression on the spinal cord or nerve branches, the number of levels at which there is pressure, the general arrangement of the cervical spine and your general health condition.

    2. Physical therapy

Physical therapy is an important part of the rehabilitation process. Your physical therapist will evaluate your work, and then teach you about proper ergonomics and a gentle stretching and flexibility program. When the pain resolves, a little strengthening exercise will be started.

The primary benefit of physical therapy correction is to avoid secondary stiffness or swelling in your shoulder, elbow or elsewhere in the neck and upper extremities, which is seen in patients who have pain and weakness.

    3. Exercise

    4. Medication

The Real Cause Of Your Neck Pain Probably Has Very Little To Do With Bad Posture

If you suffer from neck pain, you’re not alone. Spinal pain is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and its occurrence has increased dramatically over the past 25 years.

While most episodes of neck pain are likely to get better within a few months, half to three-quarters of people who have neck pain will experience repeated episodes of pain.

It’s often said there are “good and bad postures” and that specific postures can contribute to spinal pain but this belief is not supported by scientific evidence. Indeed, research shows that poor sleep, reduced physical activity and increased stress appear to be more important factors.

So despite attempts by health professionals to correct your posture and the use of “ergonomic” chairs, desks, keyboards and other gadgets chances are so-called “lifestyle factors” such as getting enough sleep, making sure you exercise and keeping stress to a minimum seem to be more salient in relieving and preventing the pain in your neck.

Massage – Getting pain treatment through massage is another great way to get rid of pain. While this may be a luxury approach, a monthly massage can be affordable and effective. There are many types of massage options, so be sure to ask about targeting your areas of pain. With the rising accessibility of massage guns, you can also get a frequent and affordable targeted massage. You can get a very high-quality massage gun for a few hundred dollars.

Go to a Chiropractor – Finding a good chiropractor can be the key to relieving your pain. Chiropractors are trained in musculoskeletal manipulation and can identify the cause of your pain and specifically treat areas of pain with specialized procedures. They can also advise you on managing your pain in your day-to-day life and suggest other activities that may help.

Physical Therapy – Often treating patients that have suffered trauma or recovering from surgery, physical therapists and their staff are also more than qualified to help treat back pain. Overlapping with treatment from a chiropractor, seeking help from a physical therapist can be another highly effective option for treating back and neck pain caused by sitting.

Get Up And Move Twice An Hour

“If you work at a desk, stand and move around 1-3 minutes every half hour during the day,” said Novak. “Whenever you can stand, do so. Standing burns 20 percent more calories than sitting.”

Regular motion can be a simple stretch for just 10 seconds, recommended Steven Conway, spokesperson for the American Chiropractic Association.

    • Stand up
    • Take a big breath
    • Arch your chest forward and move your head so you are looking at the ceiling.

“This position is the exact opposite of the hunched over office bod position and will work to counter the extended forward positions office work,” said Conway.

” good posture, you can see the back is straight and supported by a proper chair,” said Wolff.

As you sit at your desk, aim for this posture:

    • The ears, shoulders and hips are properly inline.
    • The elbow is bent to 90 degrees, as to reduce stress on the arms and shoulders.
    • Head is upright allowing the neck to be stress free.
    • The eyes are level with the top one-third of the computer screen.

To avoid the spine slump, the center of your computer screen should be roughly at chin level.

” will feel much more comfortable throughout the day, leading to more energy, better mood and more productivity,” said Wolff.

    Acute Neck Pain Wry Neck

    Explanations For Pain When Seated

There are many possible and plausible explanations for seated neck ache. The cause of the symptoms is likely to be very case-specific and may relate to obvious or obscure aspects of the patients individualized symptomology.

Patients may have structural issues in the cervical spine which suffer an escalation of severity when placed into a seated position. This can occur with arthritis neck pain or herniated discs in most instances. However, abnormal spinal curvature or vertebral misalignment issues may also react negatively from sitting down.

Patients may have soft tissue pathologies responsible for neck ache when seated. These can be due to injury, muscle imbalance, repetitive strain or many other possible reasons. Soft tissues will generally cause the types of neck symptoms often seen in activity-related pain syndromes.

Conditioning, also known as programming, is a lesser considered causation of many activity-related pain conditions. Patients get symptoms when seated early on in their suffering and associate the position with pain. It is no surprise that the symptoms now commence whenever the activity is undertaken.

    Treatment for Neck Pain Sitting

Treatment for sitting neck pain ranges considerable in form and effectiveness. Some patients attack the problem head-on and simply refuse to sit. Sounds crazy, but it can work.

Not only that, working at a standing desk has many other health benefits like:

    • Avoiding weight gain
    • Blood sugar levels returning to normal faster after meals

If you decide to change to a standing desk, consider the following:

    • Ease yourself into it by working for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. Easing into it will allow your body to gradually get used to the new position.
    • Get an adjustable desk so that you can move it to a sitting position for tasks that are more easily and efficiently done while seated.
    • Pay attention to your posture, even while working at your standing desk. Working at a standing desk with bad posture may end up with you trading one problem for another.
