Top 4 Symptoms Your Stiff Neck May Be Causing

Sinus Problems or Myofascial Pain? The Truth About Your Neck, Shoulder and Facial Pain

Your stiff neck might be causing you a variety of symptoms other than neck pain. These can include one or more of the following:

  • Headaches
  • Pins & needles in your arm &/or hand
  • Face, Jaw or Sinus Pain
  • Headaches Headaches are a very common symptom of neck stiffness. The upper neck joints are usually stiff and can refer pain through your nerves to your head causing headaches and neck related migraine. Poor posture & ergonomics, weak & poorly controlled neck & upper back muscles, inflammation in the neck joints or soft tissue strain can all lead to headaches. At City Physio we can identify, through thorough assessment, which specific areas are contributing to your headaches and target our treatment to those specific regions or dysfunctions to alleviate your headache pain and your stiff neck.
  • Arm pain Arm pain may be coming from a dysfunction in your neck. The arm pain comes about when your nerve or nerves coming out of the bony gap between your neck joints is compromised. The neck joints may have degenerative changes, be stiff, have bony spurs, a disc bulge or disc degeneration in the neck or inflammation of surrounding soft tissues or joints. Any one or more of these issues in your neck can lead to arm pain.
  • Your City Physiotherapy Physiotherapist will target their treatment to ensure that all possible causes of our arm pain are eliminated.

Proper Eustachian Tube function vs. dysfunction. In this illustration, the proper opening of the Eustachian Tube is shown to require the action of the tensor veli palatini and the levator veli palatini muscles innervated by the vagus and trigeminal nerves. When these muscles do not operate normally, fluid builds up in the middle ear potentially causing the problems of ear discomfort, ear fullness, pressure, pain, dizziness, and even partial or complete hearing loss.

Does A Sinus Infection Cause Shortness Of Breath

A sinus infection can cause shortness of breath because it can limit the respiratory system.

Symptoms for sinus infection are typically:

    • Headache
    • Manifest as congestion in lungs from pocketing of fluids
    • Increased mucous production which may also irritate lungs

The problem with breathing through the mouth is that this makes your nasal passages less congested, which means you have more space to breathe through your nose .

Sinus infections can commonly produce symptoms such as nasal congestion, sore throat, fever, and headache but do not typically lead to shortness of breath.

If you are experiencing shortness of breath, please see a doctor.

Many people assume that sinus infections cause these symptoms but this is not typically the case. Sinusitis can lead to other problems such as headaches and fever, so if you experience any of those symptoms as well then it would be appropriate for your physician to run tests to rule out an infection in order to get treatment started quickly.

Sinusitis often causes a sore throat, which in turn can make it difficult for people to swallow saliva, and as a result, they are more likely to drool at night when theyre trying to fall asleep.

Drooling can cause a persons neck or chest muscles to tire, resulting in difficulty breathing while they sleep. Sinuses will also be clogged if there is too much mucus buildup within them due to the inflammation caused by the infection.

    What Is The Scm Muscle

The sternocleidomastoid muscle is located at the base of your skull on either side of your neck, behind your ears.

On both sides of your neck, each muscle runs down the front of your neck and splits to attach to the top of your sternum and collarbone. The functions of this long, thick muscle are:

    • rotating your head from side to side
    • turning your neck to bring your ear to your shoulder
    • bending your neck forward to bring your chin to your chest
    • aiding in breathing and respiration

It also helps in chewing and swallowing and stabilizes your head when you drop it backward.

    B/ Deteriorating neurological signs

Worsening numbness, weakness and tingling or inability to normally use your bladder or bowel are classed as deteriorating neurological signs.

If any of the above worsen then medical advice is needed ASAP. Especially if you lose bladder or bowel function, it can be a medical emergency. Seek urgent medical care.

C/ Symptoms not improving over time despite good conservative management

In general, if you have had symptoms persisting greater than 6- 12 weeks despite help from your GP or Physio then it can be warranted to get an XR to help rule out any red flags or other structural issues.

Have a talk to your GP or Physio and discuss a plan for investigating your back pain further. Often these tests are all clear, which is great! It will mean that your back pain will just take a little more time to improve with the right guidance and advice from your medical team.

    How Is Thyroid Pain Treated

To treat thyroid pain, youll need to treat the thyroid condition. Thyroid cancers are usually very treatable and can usually be taken care of with surgery alone. In fact, this surgery is regularly done on an outpatient basis.

If you have acute thyroiditis, it can be treated with antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatory medicine, CEENTA ENT doctorMichael Sicard, MD, said. Surgery is sometimes required to remove the infected part of the thyroid, too. Chronic thyroiditis will need lifelong thyroid treatments.

If you have thyroid pain, dont hesitate to see a doctor. Theyll work to ensure your thyroid is healthy and help ease your discomfort.

What Are The Symptoms Of Subacute Thyroiditis

Unlike other forms of thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis causes pain in the thyroid gland. In some cases, this pain might also spread to other parts of your neck, ears, or jaw. Your thyroid may be swollen and tender to the touch. The American Thyroid Association estimates that the pain commonly lasts between 1 and 3 months.

Other symptoms of subacute thyroiditis include:

    • fever
    • heavy menstrual periods
    • depression

The first stage of subacute thyroiditis usually lasts for less than three months. The second stage may last for an additional nine to 15 months.

    Can Tmj Cause Sinus Problems

    While TMJ wont cause sinus problems, the symptoms of existing sinus problems can make TMJD worse. Nasal congestion and bruxism can trigger snoring and restless sleep. Sinusitis can cause breathing problems because of congestion, leading you to breathe with your mouth open. This pulls the jaw out of its natural resting position, which can stress the jaw and contribute to bruxism, or teeth grinding. Sinus issues like allergies can also cause sneezing, an action that can cause your jaw to click or pop, or even dislocate entirely.;

Repairing The Ligaments And Curve For A Long

    Shoulder Pain Symptoms & Conditions

The goal of our treatment is to repair and strengthen the cervical ligaments and get your head back in alignment with the shoulders in a normal posture.

What are we seeing in this image?

In this illustration, we see the before and after of neck curve corrections. Ligament laxity or looseness or damage, whether the cause is from trauma, genetic as in cases of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, ultimately causes a kyphotic force on the cervical spine, stretching the posterior ligament complex of the neck. As can be seen in the x-rays of this image, patients with a whiplash injury, Joint Hypermobility Syndrome, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome can have their cervical curve restored with Prolotherapy Injections and the use of head and chest weights.

Other Headaches That Cause Neck Pain

“Neck pain can be its own headache, called a cervicogenic headache,” says Dr. Ahmed. According to the National Headache Society, cervicogenic headaches come from a source in your neck. The pain starts in the spine of your neck, called your cervical spine, and travels up to your head. The problem in your cervical spine could be due to pressure on a nerve or blood vessel from a cervical vertebra, one of the bones in your neck. Headaches can be traced to neck trauma or arthritis of the cervical spine.

Cervicogenic headaches can be severe. They usually cause pain and a stiff neck, and typically the pain gets worse when you move your neck. Pain can shoot into your shoulders, arms, face, head and eyes. Pain can mimic a migraine and be only on one side. Treatment of these headaches depends on the cause, but it may include physical therapy, nerve block injections, pain medication and sometimes surgery.

“A severe headache with neck pain could be a migraine or cervicogenic headache,” Dr. Ahmed says. “The most important thing to do is get the right diagnosis so you can get the right treatment.”

Can Heartburn Cause Pain Between The Shoulder Blades

When stomach acid makes its way back into the esophagus, it can cause an intense burning in the chest. In some cases, a dull, aching pain can also radiate down from the neck and in between the shoulder blades. You can alleviate symptoms of acid reflux by avoiding spicy, fatty, or acidic foods, such as garlic, onions, tomatoes. Coffee and tea also have a high acid content that can trigger heartburn.

Sleeping on an incline can help reduce acid reflux at night so your sleep is not interrupted. You can do this by using a wedge pillow or an adjustable bed frame.

Symptoms Of Breast Cancer Metastasizing To The Shoulder

Breast cancer typically develops when glandular tissue of the breast becomes mutated. The cells begin to divide rapidly, giving rise to unlimited daughter cells, evading cellular death and accumulating genetic mutations that help further drive cancer development. Over time, breast cancer cells gain the ability to invade other cells and tissues throughout the body. In some cases, breast cancer spreads to tissues within and around the shoulder, leading to a number of symptoms.

If you are experiencing serious medical symptoms, seek emergency treatment immediately.

Nasal Cavity And Paranasal Sinus Cancer Symptoms

Can neck problems cause sinus problems? Dr Drew Hall

The nose opens into the nasal cavity, which is divided into two passages. This cavity curves down at the back to join the throat. Paranasal sinuses are sinuses near the nose. They are hollow, air-filled spaces in the bones around the nose.

These types of cancers are often found only because of the symptoms they cause. Possible symptoms include:

    • Nasal congestion that doesnt go away; a blockage on one side of the nose; a post-nasal drip; nosebleeds; pus that drains out of the nose; a loss of smell
    • Pain or pressure in one of the ears; hearing loss
    • Pain above or below the eyes; watery or bulging eyes; a change in vision

A growth or mass in the face, nose, or top of mouth may be another symptom of cancer in the nasal cavity or sinusesas well as numbness or pain in the face, numbness in the teeth, or even loosening of the teeth. Headaches, trouble opening your mouth and enlarged lymph nodesin the neck may also signal possible cancer.

In The Study Of The Sinus Infection Neck Pain:

Which including more than 5,000 people, the association of sinus infection neck pain with the risk of neck cancer was found at 58 percent, especially pharyngeal cancer?

The findings also support the need for cervical cancer in people with Sinus infection Neck Pain, the researchers said.

Sinus Infection Neck Pain leads to a headache in the head, and pain behind the ear is associated with otitis media.

This inflammation in the sinuses lead to obstruction of the nose, headache, and inability to breathe well, especially during sleep, and leads to congestion of the throat; Breathing can only be done by mouth.

    Other Pancoast Tumor Symptoms

As a Pancoast tumor continues to spread, so can the pain. Patients with an advanced Pancoast tumor may feel intense, constant or radiating pain in their arms, around their chest wall, between their shoulder blades or traveling into their upper back. Patients whose tumor has spread into the scalene muscles may also feel pain in their armpit.

In addition to disruptive pain in various areas of the upper body, a Pancoast tumor may cause the following symptoms to develop:

    • Swelling in the upper arm
    • Chest tightness
    • Weakness or loss of coordination in the hand muscles
    • Numbness or tingling sensations in the hand
    • Loss of muscle tissue in the arm or hand
    • Fatigue
    • Unexplained weight loss

If a Pancoast tumor compresses or irritates a nerve in the sympathetic nervous system, which regulates many of the bodys involuntary actions, a patient may experience flushing and/or excessive facial sweating. Physicians occasionally refer to these complications as Pancoast syndrome. These symptoms typically only affect one side of the facethe same side where the tumor is causing the compressionand can develop long before cancerous cells invade nearby tissues.

Some patients also experience a tingling or prickly feeling in their hands. This symptom, sometimes referred to as paresthesias, is also a result of nerve compression. In advanced cases, this compression can lead to permanent sensation loss.

    Cervical Fusion Surgery

The below information and images have been taken from .

Spinal fusion is a surgery that permanently joins together one or more bony vertebrae of the spine.

Fusing the bones together prevents movement at that level, gives back the normal disc space between the bones, and helps prevent future damage to the spinal nerves and cord.

Spinal fusion is usually a last resort and done only if all other treatments have been explored.

It will not fix your back problem or provide complete pain relief.

It will stop the motion in the painful area of your spine allowing you to increase your function and return to a more normal lifestylethough one that may not be totally pain-free.

Neck pain usually responds well to physical therapy and exercise, so make sure you have done your bit towards a successful rehabilitation before considering surgery.

What you do before and after surgery can help get you back on your feet sooner. Its important to have realistic expectations and prepare properly for your recovery.

    What is spinal fusion?

At each level of the spine, there is a disc space in the front and paired facet joints in the back.

Working together, these structures define a motion segment.
