The spinal cord in adults runs through a hollow protective bony cavity through the vertebral column. It drives from the foramen magnum of the skull to the lower margin of the first lumbar vertebrae. These spinal nerves, numbering about thirty-one, conduct motor innervations to the peripheral muscles. They also carry sensory inflows from peripheral organs like the skin to the brain.
