Will A Rotator Cuff Tear Get Bigger Without Surgery

A recent research study showed that even a complete tear wasnt very likely to get bigger . In this study, 24 patients who had full thickness supraspinatus tears and who opted to forego surgery were tracked over time. In 2 of the 24 patients, the rotator cuff tear completely healed on its own.

In 9 of the 24 the tear was smaller. In another 9 out of the 24 patients the rotator cuff tear size didnt change. In only 6 of the 24 patients, the tear was found to be bigger. So in 75% of the patients, the tear was either healed, smaller, or didnt change.

All movement in the shoulders, arms and hands is controlled by the brain. From there, the brain is in contact with the rest of your body through billions of nerves that make up your nervous system.

Some nerves go straight to their destination point, but others mix with other nerves to form complicated nerve networks called a plexus. The brachial plexus is made up of nerves that come out of the middle and upper back that supply information to the shoulders, arm, elbows, wrists, hands and fingers.

The nerves that make up the brachial plexus may become irritated as they leave the spinal column. This can occur when the spinal bones in the neck and upper back are misaligned and damage the very nerves they are supposed to protect. Any injury or trauma can cause the bones to become misaligned. Things as serious as an accident or fall or simply sitting at a desk with incorrect posture can create the vertebrae to become misaligned. Symptoms from damage to the brachial plexus can differ depending on location of the trauma.

The carpal tunnel is a passageway that runs from your wrist to your hand. It contains nerves and tendons. Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when theres prolonged pressure on the median nerve inside your carpal tunnel.

What Is Rotator Cuff Injury

The rotator cuffs a set of four muscles/tendons in the shoulder. The four tendons are – the infraspinatus, the subscapularis, the teres minor, and the supraspinatus. Together these four stabilize our shoulder joints, helping us perform various arm movements. Mainly, it helps us lift and move our arms away from our bodies. The rotator cuff essentially connects the shoulder blade socket with the numerus . Together, they form the ball-and-socket joint that we call the shoulder.

This part of the skeletal system is prone to injuries. In fact, the rotator cuff is constantly prone to degeneration, inflammation, and trauma. Thatâs why rotator cuff injury is one of the most common sources of shoulder pain. When the four tendons tug away from the arm bone, they tear. These tears can only be confirmed by radiology testing. Treatment varies from individual to individual and depends on how severely damaged the four tendons of the rotator cuff are.

This condition can be caused by repetitive strains or acute injuries. There are two types of tears – incomplete or partial tears and full-thickness or complete tears. With partial tears, the tendons stay somewhat attached to the arm bone. Such patients can experience some mobility and motor functions. But, with complete tears, the tendons rip apart completely from the shoulder bone. Such patients require immediate physiotherapeutic attention.

How Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Can Be Misdiagnosed

Almost two years after the carpal tunnel surgery, something else happened that changed the entire diagnosis!

I injured my shoulder and had pain due to a torn rotator cuff. Not knowing what was causing the pain yet, my doctor sent me to an orthopedist. He explained that nerve compression in the neck could cause radiating symptoms into the shoulder, so he ordered an MRI of my cervical spine to make a proper diagnosis. Thats the top of the spine in the neck.

The MRI showed that I had three herniated discs! That is also known as prolapsed or slipped discs.2

That might have been caused by years of working at the computer, reading on the screen while leaning forward, and bending my head up. Not to mention crimping the phone between my neck and my shoulder when I talk to clients.

S To Fix A Knot Under Your Shoulder Blade

Rotator Cuff Injury  Symptoms & Causes

Have you ever had a knot under your shoulder blade? One that hindered your movements? You are not alone. Most painful knots under the shoulder blade are due to tension buildup within the soft tissues. In this blog, I address how to break up and mobilize this tissue. Ill also offer suggestions to prevent future incidents of pain.

Step 1: Release Trigger Points

Trigger points are those hard, unyielding knots in your muscles that are sensitive to touch. These stuck and tight tissues need to be broken up. You can do this yourself with a foam roller, massage ball or even a tennis ball. To demonstrate, look at the picture of me leaning against the wall. As you can see, I have the ball directly behind my shoulder blade on the sensitive spot. Depending on how tender the area is, you may want to start by standing with your back to the wall. Lying on the ball on the ground may be too intense, which could cause the muscles to actually tighten up more because of too much direct pressure. Thus, a slow, gentle approach is best.

Once you have the ball positioned on the knot, there are three techniques you can use:

  • Now, holding the ball on the knot, slowly move your armup, sideways, down and back, and any direction that creates a gentle pull on the tissues in and near the knot. As a result, the tight tissues will open and expand.
  • Step 2: Move Your Shoulder Blades

    Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common nerve entrapments of the upper extremity. It occurs when the median nerve is compressed in the wrist. However, it is not uncommon for compression of the median nerve to occur in several different sites in the forearm. Over the course of time, the general population has come to accept that hand and wrist pain, numbness, or tingling adds up to carpal tunnel syndrome. In fact, hundreds of people each year have wrist decompression surgery in hopes of relieving these symptoms. The problem with this thought process is that there are many causes of numbness, tingling, and/or pain in the hands and fingers.

    Many people who have undergone surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome continue to experience hand, wrist, and arm pain or tingling. There are some that get temporary relief but the problem recurs frequently with symptoms of higher intensity. Other patients develop symptoms similar to carpal tunnel syndrome following neck injury. They may not have had a wrist injury but still experience pain in the hand.

    Generally speaking, there are many options for the treatment of patients experiencing carpal tunnel like symptoms. Do your homework and work with healthcare providers that share your goals and expectations. As the patient, it is your right to choose a physical therapist with whom you feel most comfortable discussing all aspects of your care.

    The Reason For Surgery

    My doctor said that if I didnt have it fixed, each time my hand got numb, the nerves might die a little, and eventually, they may never recover.

    That convinced me, and I had surgery. It involved making a small incision and cutting the ligament that was putting pressure on the carpal tunnel.

    The surgery was done as an outpatient procedure in the hospital. But since I was put to sleep, they required that someone drive me home afterward.
