What Are The Common Acid Reflux Symptoms

Thyroid Problems-Neck/Back Pain-Sciatica-Acid Reflux-Anxiety-Depression-Sinus Infections All Gone

Heartburn, regurgitation, and dyspepsia are a few of the most common acid reflux symptoms.

Heartburn. Also called acid indigestion, heartburn is a burning pain or discomfort that can move up from your stomach to the middle of your abdomen and chest. The pain can also move into your throat. Despite its name, heartburn doesn’t affect your heart.

Regurgitation. Another common symptom of acid reflux is regurgitation — or the sensation of acid backing up into your throat or mouth. Regurgitation can produce a sour or bitter taste, and you may experience “wet burps.”

Dyspepsia. Many people with acid reflux disease also have a syndrome called dyspepsia. Dyspepsia is a general term for stomach discomfort. Symptoms of dyspepsia include:

Symptoms of acid reflux may be a sign that stomach acid has inflamed your esophagus. When that happens, stomach acid can damage the lining of your esophagus and cause bleeding. Over time, it can also change the cells of esphagus and cause cancer .

Although acid reflux is extremely common and rarely serious, don’t ignore your acid reflux symptoms. Making a few lifestyle changes and using over-the-counter antacids are often all you need to control acid reflux symptoms.

Can Acid Reflux Cause Chest Pain

Chest pain is one of the most common symptoms of acid reflux. Chest pain related to reflux is also called noncardiac chest pain . Chest pain occurs during reflux episodes because the heart and the esophagus share a nerve network. Acid reflux, specifically GERD, causes up to 66% of reported NCCPs.

Evaluating Your Chest Pain

Since chest pain from acid reflux and more serious conditions such as heart attack are hard to distinguish, its important to know how to evaluate your chest pain. Chest pain from acid reflux often affects the sternum or the area below it called the epigastrium. Pain from acid reflux is often characterized as a sharp pain, which gets worse with coughing.;

Meanwhile, chest pain from non-acid reflux sources could be described as a deep, searing pain. Heart-related chest pain often radiates to other parts of the body including the back, neck, shoulders, and arms.;

The symptoms that accompany chest pain are also key in evaluating the nature of the pain. Gastro-related chest pain is often accompanied by burping or flatulence, trouble swallowing, bile regurgitation, and a burning sensation in the throat or stomach.;

Cardiac-related chest pain is often accompanied by numbness in the left arm or shoulder, shortness of breath, dizziness, and high body temperatures.;

Nausea And Gastroparesis Caused By Cervical Spine Instability

In this video Ross Hauser, MD describes the problems and symptoms of nausea and gastroparesis caused by cervical spine instability.

Summary transcriptions and explanatory notes:

  • We are seeing many nauseated patients.
  • A lot of these patients have seen gastroenterologists, they have had endoscopy performed and the result have revealed nothing.
  • Some of these patients will ultimately get a diagnosis of gastroparesis which simply means that their stomach is not working.

At 0:54 of this video, Dr. Hauser refers to Vagus nerve compression and how this could cause gastroparesis.

Food and Drug Administration requested that all forms of prescription and over-the-counter ranitidine be removed from the U.S. market. This recommendation was made because unacceptable levels of NDMA, a probable carcinogen , were found in some ranitidine products. If youre prescribed ranitidine, talk with your doctor about safe alternative options before stopping the drug. If youre taking OTC ranitidine, stop taking the drug and talk with your healthcare provider about alternative options. Instead of taking unused ranitidine products to a drug take-back site, dispose of them according to the products instructions or by following the FDAs

Can Acid Reflux Cause Headaches And Dizziness

Can Acid Reflux Cause Left Sided Chest Pain? » Scary Symptoms

Weve already covered the link between GERD and headaches, but did you know that dizziness can occur with both, too? Migraines or severe headaches have been linked to dizziness for a long time, but there is new evidence that GERD can contribute to this problem.

Acid reflux and GERD occur when stomach acid bubbles up from the opening between the stomach and the esophagus. When the acid reaches the esophagus, it causes irritation or a burning sensation. In some cases, this backflow of stomach acids can even reach the eustachian tubes in your throat.

They connect to your inner ear. The ear plays a large role in balance, and disruptions to the pressure in your ear especially with stomach acid can cause dizziness.

GERD and acid reflux have also been linked to shortness of breath because of irritation and swelling in the airway. Shortness of breath, or dyspnea, is a major contributor to dizziness and loss of consciousness.

link between gut health sometimes called your gut microbiota and your overall health. Ideally, every system in the body is balanced. When one is not, there can be a cascade of effects in areas that you wouldnt think are linked.

When you suffer from recurring acid reflux, sleeping can be difficult because acid moves up your throat easier when you are lying down. Headache pain and acid reflux can affect your sleep, and can lead to symptoms of chronic fatigue.

Vagus Nerve And Digestion

When a patient comes into our clinic for cervical spine instability issues and they describe digestive problems, the digestive difficulties are usually one of many symptoms, as I described above. One of the causes of this myriad of symptoms may be found in compression of the vagus nerve. We have two vagus nerves. The one on the left side of the neck and the one on the right side of the neck. Among the many functions of the vagus nerve is that it provides 75% of the total input for the parasympathetic nervous system, aptly called the rest and digestsystem. The vagus nerve is responsible for managing our intestinal activity as well as managing the sphincter muscles in the gastrointestinal tract.

An interesting study came out of Switzerland in 2018. What makes this study interesting is that it was lead by researchers in the University Hospital of Psychiatry, University of Bern. Specifically the Division of Molecular Psychiatry. Molecular Psychiatry seeks to uncover biological mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders and their treatment. We see many patients with cervical spine instability who have been recommended to psychiatry. Here the research team presents the biological aspect, not the psychiatric aspect, of gastrointestinal disorders as related to the vagus nerve.

Above we see that the vagus nerve is shown responsible for fighting digestive tract inflammation.

In another 2018 study, this time from France published in the Frontiers in Neuroscience.

So How Do We Treat A Patient Like This And How Do We Determine If These Problems Are From A Vagus Nerve Compression In The Neck

Dr. Hutcheson and Dr. Hauser explain in the following video.

1:25 of the video: Dr. Hutcheson: So many of these ailments can be coming from a structural defect in the neck. For example, someone very close to me in my family has a lot of clearing of the throat and theyre always clearing their throat especially after eating. I always thought they needed a barium swallow study and the tests we just spoke about to see why swallowing was such a problem. Maybe I thought there was a narrowing of the esophagus but the doctors involved thought everything was okay and they recommended palliative treatment. But I always thought there must be more going on and that needs to be treated with more than symptom suppression.

Assessing the cervical curve and how this may impact vagus nerve function and problems of swallowing and digestion.

We perform imaging to assess for the integrity of the cervical curve so as you can see here when the curve is normal we have a normal backward curved or lordosis, your head is sitting on top of your shoulders. In this position, the vagus nerve is properly positioned.

  • When there is cervical spine instability, and there is a change to the natural curve of the neck, the vagus nerve is stretched and this stretching creates an unnatural tension on the nerve and this tension disrupts normal nerve signaling.

Can Allergies Cause Vertigo

GERD, migraines, fainting, brain fog, and other gradually increasing symptoms in an EDS case

Vertigo is a sense of rotation like the world is spinning. Is caused by balance disorders and many health conditions like medications, a dysfunction in the inner ear, or from the brain. There are many different causes of vertigo, but the most common is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo . In this article, we will research two less common causes and the links and connections between Allergies, and vertigo.

The Link Between Allergies and Vertigo:

For sure there is a link between Allergies and Dizziness, but what about vertigo? There are a number of conditions that can cause you to feel dizzy or nauseous. For sure GERD and allergies are some of them. The strong connection between LPR, Allergies, and postnasal drip are real. All those symptoms often affect your middle ear and the back of your throat.

Ear pain is often a symptom of an ear infection or sinus infection. Middle ear pressure changes, such as from allergies can cause swelling of the Eustachian tube or the presence of fluid in the middle ear. So YES, Allergies can cause vertigo!

When Do Acid Reflux Symptoms Occur

Acid reflux symptoms most often occur:

  • After eating a heavy meal
  • When bending over or lifting an object
  • When lying down, especially on your back

People who have frequent acid reflux symptoms most often experience them at night. Nighttime GERD also produces the most pain. However, the level of pain does not always indicate the degree of damage to your esophagus.

More than half of all pregnant women experience heartburn during pregnancy. Increased hormones and pressure from a growing fetus can combine to produce this acid reflux symptom. In most cases, heartburn improves or completely goes away after delivery.

Muscle Strain And Active Injury

One of the most common causes of pain between your shoulder blades is increased stress and strain on the muscle group in that area. Strenuous or intense activities like exercising, heavy lifting, sudden movement, and other activities can also trigger this pain.

Active injuries like spine fractures, slipped discs, or other trauma can also trigger chest pain. While problems like these often heal once the underlying condition has been treated, there are rare instances where the pain persists after the healing process. In these cases, physical therapy or surgery may be considered as a more permanent treatment option.

What Signs And Symptoms Are More Likely To Occur With A Heart Attack Than With Heartburn

The textbook version of a heart attack consists of a sudden ‘crushing’ pain in the chest with breathing difficulties as a result of exertion.

The fact is, many heart attacks do not happen this way because the symptoms can vary between people.

But the typical heart attack warning signals are… A feeling of pressure or tightness in the chest and that can spread to the left arm, the neck, jaw or back.

  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea

If you experience any of these symptoms get to ER immediately!

If there is any kind of recurring or chronic back and chest pain get checked by a doctor to rule out heart disease.;

What Are We Seeing In This Image

Acid Reflux & Neck Pain

The vagus nerve supplies input to the stomach that helps manage your stomach muscles. If this input is compromised, in other words, the vagus nerve is sending bad or confusing messages to your stomach, your stomach may not push food out into your small intestines. This means food remains in your stomach longer than it should. This leads to the common symptoms of bloating, fullness, nausea, and finally when your stomach has had enough, the initiation of the vomiting response. In this illustration, dysfunction of the pyloric sphincter between the stomach and the small intestines is isolated as a problem of vagus nerve compression or injury.

Cervical vagopathy poor vagus function

Dr. Hauser describes the term cervical vagopathy. This relates to poor vagus function and it is seen as a precursor to illness and makes recovery from diseases difficult. Low vagus nerve function has four main manifestations on the human body that increase the risk for almost all human diseases: chronic inflammation, elevated oxidative stress, sympathetic dominance action system, and coagulopathy which can lead to joint inflammation, joint swelling, and joint pain. Next the treatment of this problem with Prolotherapy.

Treating Cervical Ligaments With Prolotherapy Published Research From Caring Medical

Prolotherapy is an injection technique that stimulates the repair of unstable, torn or damaged ligaments. When the cervical ligaments are unstable, they allow for excessive movement of the vertebrae, which can stress tendons, atrophy muscles, pinch on nerves, such as the vagus nerve,; and cause other symptoms associated with cervical instability including problems of digestion among others.

In 2014, we published a comprehensive review of the problems related to weakened damaged cervical neck ligaments in;The Open Orthopaedics Journal. We are honored that this research has been used in at least 6 other medical research papers by different authors exploring our treatments and findings and cited, according to Google Scholar, in more than 40 articles.

Symptoms Of Breast Cancer Metastasizing To The Shoulder

Breast cancer typically develops when glandular tissue of the breast becomes mutated. The cells begin to divide rapidly, giving rise to unlimited daughter cells, evading cellular death and accumulating genetic mutations that help further drive cancer development. Over time, breast cancer cells gain the ability to invade other cells and tissues throughout the body. In some cases, breast cancer spreads to tissues within and around the shoulder, leading to a number of symptoms.

If you are experiencing serious medical symptoms, seek emergency treatment immediately.

Use Antacids & Ppi’s Sparingly

Antacids and Proton Pump Inhibitors are popular acid reflux medications to help relieve indigestion and heartburn.

Antacids work by either neutralizing stomach acid or forming a raft on top of the stomach contents to stop the acid flowing into the esophagus.

Popular brands are Gaviscon and Rennies.

People with severe GERD symptoms often resort to stronger drugs such as PPI’s. Instead of neutralizing stomach acid, PPI’s reduce the production of stomach acid.

According to the World Health Organisation more than $10 Billion is spent on acid reflux medications each year!

Like antacids, PPI’s can be bought over the counter. However, stronger PPI’s require a doctors prescription.;

PPI’s Antacids are generally safe when taken correctly. The problem is most people don’t.

Because the relief is fast acting many people develop a dependency and thats when the problems start.

Remember, these drugs only relieve the symptoms they don’t address the cause and an over-reliance on them may mask a serious problem or create one.;

Nexium, the most popular PPI is one of the top selling drugs in history with over $72 billion in Sales in the US since its inception in 1992.

Growing evidence shows reducing levels of stomach acid makes it harder for the digestive to break down hard to digest foods.;

If you’re heartburn or back pain persist after 14 days go to your doctors and get checked out;;

3 weeks ago, I went to see a new doctor in a new practice.I finally figured out that doctors from one hospital have access to your medical records, and after several years, they all know you. They get used to you. While you still go there in search of answers, they dont see you as someone whos in pain anymore. They see you more like, part of the environment, part of the furniture, as they say in french.

So, this one was an ear nose & throat specialist in private practice, not a regular hospital.Actually, I have seen an ear nose & throat doctor like 3 years ago, she examined my throat and despite my complaints, did not feel the need to investigate any further.But this new oneshe almost immediately told me to do a CT Scan of the neck & throat area, + a gastroscopy.

The CT scan would show if there were any issues with my throat or front part of the neck, the gastroscopy procedure, well , she told me there was the possibility that my problems are due to;gastroesophageal reflux disease;, or;silent reflux.

She suspected that after I told her that my pain symptoms were worse when waking up in the morning, and it turns out that silent reflux and GERD often happen at night, because the body position helps acidity make its way back from the stomach to the throat and promote inflammation that is likely to cause many of the problems that I was complaining about.
