What Is Chronic Atrophic Gastritis

Causes and managment of abdominal pain with black stools – Dr. Sanjay Panicker

Chronic atrophic gastritis is long-term inflammation of the stomach lining. It happens more frequently in older people but can happen in younger people, too. In many people, H. pylori causes atrophic gastritis. Other causes of atrophic gastritis include autoimmune disease , hypersecretion , and environment.

Chronic atrophic gastritis leads to the extensive destruction of parietal and chief cells which produce gastric acid and gastric enzymes, respectively. Gastric acid and gastric enzymes are needed for digestion. When enough of these cells are lost, digestion-related complications arise including cobalamin deficiency , iron-deficiency anemia and infections caused by the food we eat.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is the most serious of these problems and can cause neurological problems in those with pernicious anemia or autoimmune disease. In people who take PPIs for too long, cobalamin deficiency is rare however, susceptibility to bacterial infection increases. Of note, gastric acid kills bacteria in our food, and when there’s less gastric acid because of PPIs, bacteria remain virulent and can more easily infect.

Chronic atrophic gastritis is most worrisome because it predisposes a person to gastric cancer, which is deadly and carries a poor prognosis.

You’re Always Running To The Toilet

While most people do just fine on the medication, diarrhea is one of the most common side effects of omeprazole, Ravella says. Loose stools are never fun, but they should clear up on their own. If you’re constantly tethered to the toilet, or if you see blood in your stool, it’s time to give your doctor a call.

Take Omeprazole As Directed

Take the daily dose as prescribed at the time prescribed. Over-the-counter omeprazole should be taken in the morning before breakfast. For prescription omeprazole, the prescribing doctor or other healthcare professional will specify a time of day to take the medication. Dont increase or decrease the dose. Dont skip a dose for one or two days or take a double dose in place of a missed dose. The medicine must be taken daily over the full period to realize its full benefits.

Can Prilosec Cause Stomach Cancer

Doru Paul, MD, is triple board-certified in medical oncology, hematology, and internal medicine. He is an associate professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and attending physician in the Department of Hematology and Oncology at the New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Many physicians believe that long-term use of proton-pump inhibitors like Prevacid and Prilosec for gastroesophageal reflux disease can exacerbate atrophic gastritis in the body of the stomachespecially in people with H. pylori infection. Of note, infection with H. pylori can lead to stomach ulcers and even stomach cancer. In addition to interfering with absorption, chronic atrophic gastritis likely serves as a premalignant or precancerous lesion which predisposes a person to stomach cancer .

Assuming that long-term use of medications like Prevacid and Prilosec does, in fact, lead to atrophic gastritis in people with H. pylori infection, and thus increases the risk for stomach cancer what would be the mechanism of such exacerbation?

What Causes Excessive Stomach Acid And How To Get Rid Of It

Can omeprazole cause chest pain â performance today

Written byBel Marra HealthPublished onDecember 5, 2017

Excessive stomach acid can be uncomfortable to live with, and while in many cases it is a minor nuisance, it can lead to serious health problems when not treated.

Stomach acid is important to the digestive system. It helps us process food and it kills harmful bacteria. The stomach makes the hormone called gastrin, which creates hydrochloric acid. When these acid levels increase, it can lead to hyperacidity. Excess stomach acid can range from mild to severe.

Our diet, environment, and even stress can be contributing factors to excessive stomach acid. There are, in fact, relatively simple ways to reduce excess stomach acid or prevent it altogether.

No chris you arent mental,, Acid Reflux can definately cause this , it must be some sort of automatic response to acid being in a certain area or something

Dear All, I know how you all feel! I have had oesophagitus and major acid reflux since I was 19 and I am now 44. I have had cameras shoved down my throat more times than I care to mention only to be told that yes I have like grade bad oesophagitus. I am currently on nexium which controls it nicely most of the time although i sometimes have need to double the dose.

I am also awakened in the middle of the night fairly regularily, being unable to breathe nor speak & with terrible pain due to a major gush of pure acid coming up to my throat and burning it to a frazzle. My wife seems to have got used to me hopping around the house in the middle of the night, guzzling milk, water, chewing strange things like brockley stalks in an attempt to get rid of the intence inferno in my throat.

    Ways To Alleviate Gerd Symptoms

There are several things you can do to yourself to keep your GERD symptoms to a minimum. If you carry excess weight on your body, losing the weight should make a big difference in your symptoms. Stopping smoking has also been known to alleviate GERD symptoms.

    • Beverages that are caffeinated or alcoholic
    • Chocolate
    • Foods that are high in fat
    • Onions
    • Garlic
    • Pizza, salsa or other tomato-based foods

Its also recommended that you eat smaller meals five to six times a day instead of having three large meals each day. If possible, you should also try to eat your last meal three to four hours before you go to bed.

If you have a child who suffers from acid reflux, there are a few things you can try to help relieve the symptoms. When youre feeding your infant, burp them several times and keep them in an upright position for at least 30 minutes after theyre done eating.

As with adults, children should also have smaller meals more frequently and stay away from the list of acid reflux-triggering foods listed above.

    Can Acid Reflux Cause Gas

Health Problems : Stomach Ache Causes

On average, healthy individuals pass gas 13 to 21 times a day. This gas is expelled through the mouth or anus . Gas accumulates in the digestive tract through eating or bacterial fermentation.

As digestive bacteria break down food, little pockets of air are created in the process. Because the bacteria in each human body is different, some people may be more tolerant of digesting certain food compared to other people.

How Are Acid Reflux and Gas Related

Excessive gas and acid reflux may exist simultaneously. A patient experiencing excessive flatulence may also experience bloating from acid reflux. While acid reflux does not directly cause gas, doctors believe that the two may be interlinked.

This is because certain conditions that trigger acid reflux can also trigger gassiness. Individuals who eat spicy and citrusy foods may increase their acidity levels while also triggering gassiness. Alleviating gassiness could coincidentally improve acid reflux symptoms because the circumstances that create these conditions tend to be similar.

Weighing The Benefits Versus Potential Risks

Gastroesophageal reflux disease occurs when the upper portion of the digestive tract is not functioning properly, causing stomach contents to flow back into the esophagus. Recurring heartburn is the most common symptom others include the sensation of food or liquid coming up into the throat and a sour taste, as well as several less common symptoms. Recurring symptoms affect up to 29% of Canadians.

Proton pump inhibitors are a class of medications that have emerged as the most effective therapy for relieving symptoms, improving quality of life, and healing and preventing damage to the esophagus. Physicians also prescribe them for ulcer disease and functional dyspepsia. PPIs work by blocking an enzyme in the lining of the stomach that is necessary for acid secretion. Side effects that some patients report include headache, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and nausea. They usually resolve on their own and patients can usually carry on taking their PPI medication.1

Are There Rare Acid Reflux Symptoms

Although a common gastrointestinal condition, not all acid reflux symptoms are shared by patients. Some only experience heartburn and regurgitation, which are two distinct signs of acid reflux. Others may exhibit symptoms that stray from the usual list.

Listed below are some of the usual concerns on uncommon acid reflux symptoms. Keep in mind that the majority of these are caused by chronic acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease and may not be relevant to patients with temporary acid reflux.

If so, a separate issue not related to acid reflux may be the cause of the following symptoms:
