Strained Neck Muscles Can Cause Arm Pain
Neck Muscles can get strained from over work, stretching beyond the normal range of motion or other conditions. Strained neck muscles can cause pain and muscle spasms can cause severe pain in the neck.
Muscles perform the function of supporting the spine and any risk to the spine may result in guarding by muscles, making them stiff. Muscles extending to the arms can be painful and sore. Nerves too can get trapped or compressed causing pain, numbness and burning in the arms.

Heres A Surprise Cause Of Low Back Pain Rounded Shoulders
More than 80 percent of Americans will experience low back pain at some time in their lives. Total costs of the condition are estimated at more than $100 billion annually, with two-thirds of that due to decreased wages and productivity. This is a huge price for a society to pay for a condition that can be avoided. On an individual level, this is a painful condition that can be prevented with a little attention and care.
A recent study from the American College of Physicians found that lower back pain is one the most common reasons that people go to the doctor. It is also the accepted basis for taking over the counter anti-inflammatory medication. Now, new guidelines from this study are recommending exercise, yoga, or massage as a better form of treatment than medication.
This is a huge shift in thinking, and a most welcome one. For years, the go-to solution for back pain has been a quick fix pill, which brings only temporary relief. This intensive study, which combined data from 150 studies, suggests that holistic approaches to the body are a better solution.;As we look to alleviate our back pain with exercise and massage, it brings up a most pertinent question. What is causing our lower back pain?
So, if rounded shoulders are causing your lower back painwhat can you do to unwind your stiff and tight shoulders and get them back on your back where they belong?

Neck Trauma Can Be An Underlying Cause Of Leg Pain And Shoulder Pain
OUR health care system is very mechanistic. Shoulder Pain or leg is not always caused in the arm or leg but oftentimes it is coming from the neck. Each of these conditions can have their roots in postural adaptation that is caused by an upper cervical spine misalignment caused by a neck injury. In the following article we will outline common conditions that are under the heading of ,arm pain or leg pain and then discuss how an injury to your upper Cervical spine can be the underlying cause for each condition.
Common conditions that cause shoulder and arm pain:
While all of the syndromes listed above can cause arm pain and a plethora of other problems, current medical treatment does not try to uncover their cause but rather chooses to treat the end result of body dysfunction, the symptoms. Common methods of treatment are pain killers, physical therapy or surgeries. We have written several articles on each of these subjects in the past but thought it was important to cover each of these and explain how an upper Cervical injury can globally affect the body and lead to many of these conditions that have no known cause or cure in the medical literature.
When The Shoulder Is The Suspect

Shoulder pain is most often caused by an injury to the rotator cuff, a group of tendons and muscles that stabilize the joint. The rotator cuff develops wear and tear with age, and can be easily injured. When this happens, we compensate by using different muscles to pick things up or reach for them. This may cause both shoulder and neck pain, says Dr. Ricchetti. You may have a rotator cuff injury or other shoulder problem if pain:
- Develops in the shoulder itself or on the outside of your upper arm.
- Is dull and aching.
- Improves when you rest your arm.

Conditions That May Cause Radiculopathy
Cervical radiculopathy is commonly caused by one or more of the following conditions:
- Cervical degenerative disc disease. When the intervertebral discs lose hydration with age, they can start to flatten out and the foramina may narrow where the spinal nerves exit the spinal canal.
Cervical radiculopathy can cause signs and/or symptoms anywhere from the neck down through the arms and into the fingers. The exact location of pain, tingling, numbness, and/or weakness depends on which cervical nerve root is compressed. For example, compression of the C7 nerve may lead to symptoms that are experienced more in the triceps and/or into the middle part of the hand.1
Cervical radiculopathy signs and symptoms are typically one-sided, such as going down one arm. It is also possible for nerves to be compressed on both sides of the neck and have bilateral symptoms of cervical radiculopathy.
Development Of Upper Back And Chest Pain
The chest and upper back are in close proximity to each other with both sharing many ribs that help protect the same vital internal organs. Some of the underlying biomechanics that can contribute to both upper back and chest pain include:
- Muscle dysfunction. Muscle inflammation or strain in the chest and/or upper back region can cause muscle tightness and/or spasms. When one muscle becomes painful or stiff, other nearby muscles may also become painful in response, such as if they need to work harder. Additionally, tendons, ligaments, or the muscleâs connective tissues may become overstretched or inflamed and refer pain to the chest and upper back.
- Problem with internal organs. Various problems or conditions can develop in the heart or lungs, which may send pain to both the chest and upper back.
Many other factors may be involved with developing chest and upper back pain. Sometimes upper back and chest pain may also have more than one cause or separate causes.

Avoid Lifting Heavy Items
Lifting heavy items can lead to injuries of your shoulder blades. Therefore, try not to lift heavy weights. It can trigger pain between your shoulder blades. Do not carry bags that are heavy on one side of the shoulder. It can put stress on that particular side of the muscles. Never bend and lift any heavy objects. Try to bend your knees before lifting. It will avoid putting too much pressure on your back. So, by taking precaution, you can avoid any injuries to your back shoulder.

Other Conditions That Can Cause Arm Pain Which Is Related To Neck Pain
Other conditions affecting the neck and the region between the neck and the shoulders can contribute to neck and arm pain. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tennis Elbow or other musculoskeletal conditions can cause neck and arm pain. Other conditions like thoracic outlet syndrome, tumors or certain infections affecting the base of brain and neck can cause arm pain.
Neck and arm pain can be treated with rest, cold or heat packs, antiinflammatories and muscle relaxants, physical therapy and muscle strengthening exercises.

Possible Sources Of Radiating Neck Pain
Similar to how the sciatic nerve can cause radiating lower back pain, the radicular nerve in your neck can cause radiating pain referred to as cervical radiculopathy. Motor and sensory functions are controlled by eight nerve roots running from the neck along your shoulders, arms, and hands. Problems with any of these nerve roots may result in hand pain that can range from mild and intermittent to sharp and persistent.

Ways To Relieve Pain From A Shoulder Problem
If these measures fail to bring relief, you may need an MRI of your shoulder. If that shows a torn rotator cuff, then shoulder surgery may be necessary, says Dr. Ricchetti. If the physical exam and imaging indicate arthritis or a nerve-related pain in your neck, he recommends referral to a spine specialist. Spine specialists will conduct a thorough neurological examination, and do imaging and other tests. They will also begin with conservative care.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Vs Cervical Radiculopathy

Carpal tunnel syndrome is not the only condition that can cause numbness and tingling in the hands and wrists. These symptoms can also be caused by problems in the cervical spine.

Conditions such as a herniated or degenerated disc, cervical stenosis, or cervical osteoarthritis can trigger impingement on the C6 or C7 nerve roots, which originate in the cervical spine and innervate almost the same areas of the hand as the median nerve.

Because theyre both conditions caused by nerve impingement, both carpal tunnel syndrome and cervical radiculopathy cause similar symptoms: dull pain, tingling, and/or numbness, with occasional shooting pains along the nerve path.
A comprehensive neurological evaluation can help identify whether the symptoms are being caused by carpal tunnel syndrome or a cervical spine condition. In fact, sometimes the two conditions are seen together, as nerve compression at the neck can make the nerves lower down more vulnerable. Clinical evaluation, electrodiagnostic testing EMG, and possibly neck imaging can help put together the pieces of the puzzle.

What Can Cause Sharp Pain In Your Neck And Shoulder When Breathing
A couple of conditions can cause pain in the neck and/or shoulder when you take a deep breath, including:
- Pleurisy : Symptoms include sudden chest pain that may be felt only while coughing or breathing deeply, fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
- Pericarditis : Symptoms include rapid-onset stabbing chest pain, possibly pain in the shoulder, fever, weakness, and trouble breathing. It gets worse if you lie down or breathe deeply.
Pleurisy and pericarditis aren’t usually medical emergencies but you should treat any chest pain or breathing difficulty as an emergency until you know for sure what’s causing it.

What Do I Need To Know About Neck Anatomy
You dont need to memorize the physiology and anatomy of your neck to improve its function and reduce pain, but its helpful to have a general understanding of your cervical spine.
Neck mobility is matchless. Although you wont get any Exorcist-style head spinning, it is capable of moving the head in many directions: 90° of flexion , 90° of extension , 180° of rotation , and almost 120° of tilt to either shoulder.
But all that mobility comes at the cost of complexity. First youve got your seven vertebrae , each cushioned by an intervertebral disc and connected by facet joints. There are also 32 muscles, plus the tendons that attach them to bones, that help move and stabilize the neck, as well as a number of ligaments attaching bones to each other. Thats a lot of action in a comparatively small area.;;
What Beginners Must Know About Guitar Related Hand And Wrist Pain
The most common guitar related hand and wrist pain comes from incorrect posture or positioning.; This is crucial when playing any instrument.;;
The piano is a perfect example of how much can go wrong by poor positioning.; Think about where your legs, arms, wrists, and neck are when youre sitting at the piano.
Most likely youre going to be sitting in this position for a while, so its important that you have proper body mechanics.;
When playing piano, your knees and elbows should be at about 90 degrees of flexion with your wrists in a neutral/straight position.; Its also important that your neck isnt flexed forward to read the music.
Guitar is a little different, because of the shape of the instrument, strap preference and standing/sitting position.
However, your body mechanics should follow the same general principles.;

The Upper Cervical Difference
While a general chiropractor may try popping your elbow or wrist to relieve the pain, remember that this will help only if the nerve compression you are exeprincing in these areas is the only source of nerve compression. While most chiropractors adjust the neck, the precision with which upper cervical chiropractors operate may make the difference. Measurements can pinpoint misalignments to hundredths of a degree. Such a small misalignment could be creating the chain reaction in the body that is leading to chronic nerve pain. Before doing anything drastic or invasive, locate an upper cervical practitioner near you for a no-obligation consultation to see if this is a viable therapy for you.

Can Neck Pain Cause A Headache On One Side
Along with causing headache neck pain at times can be observed on only one side of the neck like right side neck pain or left side neck pain with a headache. This kind of pain on the particular side may be the offshoot of many underlying conditions like injuries, blood vessel problems, and inflammatory diseases. Tension headaches and migraines can also lead to pain on one side of the head.

What Causes Outer Wrist Pain When Twisting
Ulnar wrist pain is on the outer wrist, the same side as the “pinky” finger. It may be caused by arthritis, nerve injuries, or a wrist fracture. Other common causes include:
- Ulnar impaction syndrome: A condition in which the ulna bone is longer than the radius bone, causing it to push on other bones
- Triangular fibrocartilage complex injury: An injury to the cartilage and ligaments that connect the ulna bone to other parts of the wrist
- Ganglion cyst: A small fluid-filled sac that develops on the wrist joint
Check with your doctor if you’re experiencing outer wrist pain to get prompt diagnosis and treatment.
Symptoms Of Cervical Radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathys primary symptom is pain that radiates from the neck down to the shoulders, arms, hands, and possibly all the way to the fingers.
This pain is an example of sensory dysfunction. Sensory function is related to feeling. In addition to neck pain, numbness and tingling in your neck and upper body are sensory symptoms associated with cervical radiculopathy.
In addition to sensory symptoms, cervical radiculopathy may also cause motor dysfunction. Motor dysfunction is related to muscles and movement. Weakness and changes in reflexes in your neck and upper body are examples of motor symptoms of cervical radiculopathy.

What Causes Shoulder Elbow And Wrist Pain
Shoulder and Elbow Pain are quite common complaints. Usually this type of pain is also very debilitating and affects us in our daily routine.
Shoulders, Elbow or wrist pain are most commonly caused by overuse. In fact, repetitive movements for athletes, or repetitive jobs are usually the main issue. Some common arm pain symptoms could include: nerve pain, tingling in hands, muscle aches and in some cases the pain can even extend to the upper back and neck.
These complaints are usually originating from an impingement of the nerves that travel from the neck into the arm. Chiropractic is a very effective, non-invasive treatment for such problems.
