How Can A Chiropractor Help With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a ârepetitive stress injuryâ, which is abbreviated . Chiropractic is beneficial for patients seeking noninvasive relief from this ailment that has become all too prevalent with the increased use of computers.
How Does It Occur?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by repetitive motion, such as typing, or completing repetitive motions with the hands like assembly line work. These actions may cause pain and injury over time.
The earlier that CTS is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome
Diagnosis includes physical examination and possibly x-rays.
Chiropractic Care for CTS
Typically, chiropractic care, for CTS is to address the problematic wrist and elbow, as well as adjustments of the upper spine. It may be advised to rest the affected arm, apply cold to reduce inflammation, perform recommended exercises, or wear a splint and or brace to immobilize the area.
Some common treatments we use for carpal tunnel syndrome include:Chiropractic care of the wrist, arm, and upper spine: Misalignment in the spine does contribute to symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Massage Can Help With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome And Rsi
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a type of RSI that is more common now than ever before. RSIs are caused by overuse and repetition such as typing, using a computer mouse, driving, video games, lifting heavy objects, and even sports and exercise if done incorrectly.
The pain from RSIs typically occurs in the upper part of the body. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome generally hurts in the wrists and forearms, but the problem actually originates from the shoulder area.
According to the Mayo Clinic:
Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the median nerve. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway surrounded by bones and ligaments on the palm side of your hand. When the median nerve is compressed, the symptoms can include numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and arm.
What Are The Treatment For Cts
The usual treatments for CTS are non-surgical options such as wrist splints that hold your hand in a neutral position, mild pain medication and medications to reduce inflammation andsteroid injections into your carpal tunnel area to reduce inflammation. The surgical option is one of the most common surgeries performed in the U.S and involves cutting the band of tissue in the wrist that crosses the Median nerve so as to lessen the pressure on the nerve. While a surgical remedy for CTS is common, with 463,637 carpal tunnel releases performed annually, it is not without its drawbacks. Post-CTS surgery, 10-30% of patients have reported wrist strength complications while 10-15% of CTS surgery patients change jobs after the operation.

The Cost Of Carpal Tunnel Treatment
Fixing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome requires relieving the pressure on the median nerve at the wrist. The prescribed care for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is usually one of the following treatments:
- Wrist splints
- They can immobilize the wrist and ease some pressure on the tendons which may allow the swelling and inflammation to go down on its own.
- However the splints do nothing to soften and lengthen the irritated muscles and tendons which are usually the source of the problem.
- Splints may range in price from $15 to $120.

Key Points Of Carpal Tunnel Massage
If you or a therapist performs this carpal tunnel massage, ensure it’s properly applied. Many people make the mistake of trying to massage themselves. Doing so is not very effective. In fact, the motions required make it impossible to do it properly on yourself.
You need the two thumbs to perform myofascial release carpal tunnel massage. Therefore, you need a partner or a therapist. All physical therapists know how to do this. Alternatively, you can use theCarpalRxwhich is calibrated to perform myofascial release massage automatically.
Establish a regimen. You must get a carpal tunnel massage daily and for at least 3-4 weeks if you have carpal tunnel syndrome. For example, carve out time to get a 15 minute treatment from a partner, therapist or the CarpalRx.
Be patient. A proper carpal tunnel massage is not an overnight cure for carpal tunnel syndrome. Therefore, faithfully follow your daily regimen for several weeks to see good results. Remember, it took years for you to acquire carpal tunnel syndrome. So nothing will cure the symptoms overnight.
Hand And Wrist Stretches
A physical therapist, occupational therapist, or certified hand therapist can teach you exercises which you can learn to do on your own. Nerve and tendon gliding exercises have been shown to be helpful in carpal tunnel syndrome. Simple exercises I have found helpful are stretches which involve the fingers and wrist, pulling them back into extension and holding the stretch for 20 seconds, then relaxing. This can be repeated for up to 5 minutes per session, 2-3 times per day. This stretch shouldnt be painful or done with excessive force. Therapists can also do therapeutic ultrasound and iontophoresis treatments which can help reduce symptoms.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Is All About Tendon Swelling
As tendons stress, they get damaged and repaired. The body senses theres injury happening. Under such conditions, the body has a natural defense against further harm calledinflammation. Therefore, the rip and repair cycle that goes on between the tendon and sheath is the reason for tendon inflammation and swelling.
Normally, inflammation is a good thing. It means the body is diverting blood to the concerned area in order to provide nutrients. Its also carrying away broken and damaged cell components from the area.
Inflammation and swelling also makes the region tender or painful to the touch. Thats so that you leave it alone while it heals.
But the problem in carpal tunnel syndrome is that the inflammation and swelling happens inside a very confined space. This space is called the carpal tunnel . Its actually a passageway formed mostly by a cradle of wrist bones. The roof of the passageway is formed by a tough ligament .
Its important to understand that the tunnel is rigid and does not stretch apart or expand. In fact, the ligament is what a surgeon cuts during carpal tunnel release surgeryto relieve the swelling pressure underneath.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Massage Therapy Does Wonders
January 8, 2021 By FBN
If youve ever experienced ongoing pain, numbness or tingling in your wrists or hands, you might have a condition known as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage about the width of the thumb that runs from the forearm to the palm of the hand via the wrist and houses nine tendons and one median nerve. When the tunnel becomes inflamed, the result is chronic pain.
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, or CTS, is caused by the compression of the median nerve encased inside the carpal tunnel, which then leads to inflammation in and around the tunnel, pain and numbness.
CTS can be caused by a variety of situations, with the most common being repetitive use of the hands and wrist, such as typing for long periods of time or other tasks that result from overuse of the tendons, ligaments and muscles in the forearm, wrist and hands. Other physical conditions that can cause the median nerve to get pinched in the tunnel might be swelling in the area caused by a wrist fracture or being overweight autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis thyroid problems menopause or pregnancy and chronic diseases such as diabetes.
CTS can also be caused when the median nerve is entrapped or pinched in another location above or below the wrist area.

Tips For Using Ice Therapy
To get the full benefits of ice therapy, its important to apply it to the wrist properly. Keep these tips in mind for the best results:
- Apply for no more than 15 to 20 minutes at a time, followed by a half hour break between sessions.
- Avoid direct contact between skin and your ice pack. Try wrapping it in a towel first.
- Apply ice therapy as soon as possible after experiencing wrist pain.
- Never use cold therapy while sleeping, immediately before physical activity, or near an open wound.
Is It Really Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Many people are diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome when they actually have Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is also caused by nerve entrapment with the same symptoms of pain, numbness and tingling in the hand, thumb, wrist and forearm. However the nerve impingement is higher up in the neck and or in the shoulder region.
Whether you seek treatment from a medical or holistic doctor, surgeon, chiropractor, physical therapist or massage therapist, the provider should be aware of and have the ability to treat both conditions.

- Periodically Throughout the Day
At the outset, its difficult to tell how long it will take before the effects of massage will be felt. Carpal tunnel relief can be found in as little as one session or as many as 5 to 10. For the best results, practice carpal tunnel massage throughout the day. If you work on a computer for extended periods, take periodic breaks and try performing light massages.
- Before Going to Bed
Its common for carpal tunnel symptoms to occur at night. Try performing a few minutes of massage prior to going to sleep to help keep nightly symptoms at bay.
- How to Relieve Carpal Tunnel at Night
Stretches and exercises for carpal tunnel may be more effective and easier to perform if you begin by massaging your hands, wrists and forearms. These techniques will help to loosen and warm up tight muscles, making your ligaments more flexible and pliable.
All of these massage techniques are designed for daily use, though they should be stopped immediately if they result in pain or other negative symptoms. If symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome persist, talk to your physician about next steps.

How Myofascial Release Massage Releases Tendons
In the simplest form of carpal tunnel massage using myofascial release, the therapist uses TWO thumbs simultaneously.
First, they press both thumbs deep into the tissue. Then they rotate their thumbs in counter-rotating directions over the tissue. At the same time, the rotations move from side to side. Doing so provides a shearing force to the tissues below .
The result of this motion is that tendons and their sheaths move in opposing directions. Therapists describe this as a kneading motion. In effect, the motion pulls at the adhesions in three dimensions. Doing so insures the adhesions break apart.
As explained above, the ripped collagen encourages the body to replace the damaged, improper collagen with “correct” collagen.
In time, the rip and repair cycle fades because the body properly repairs the damaged collagen.
This collagen replacement is a key factor in healing. And carpal tunnel massage using myofascial release is the quickest and most efficient way to achieve healing. However, you can also do so with prolonged rest. But that takes months.
In fact, for rest to be successful, you cannot use your fingers and hands even for minor tasks. In other words, you would need to refrain from anything more than slight moments. And you would have to refrain for two months for complete success. For most people thats nearly impossible.
