As Dr. Corin Storkey of Seleno Health explains For the people of Junin in Peru maca has been used as a medicinal remedy to prevent and treat health conditions for over 2000 years If you ask any of the Incan descendants how to prepare maca they all answer the same way It must be cooked or boiled to extract the medicine. So why in our western culture are we suddenly changing 2000 years of tradition and deciding to consume raw maca powder?

Traditionally maca has been cooked, boiled, baked, roasted or fermented and eaten as part of a meal alongside other Andean food, but not eaten raw. Raw maca contains enzymes which inhibit the digestion and assimilation of the foodwhich explains the stomach cramps and digestive issues.

No matter how nutritious a food is, if the body is unable to break it down and absorb it, you probably wont be able to reap the benefits. I like to understand traditional ways of food preparation as they are usually based on generations of knowledge. For example, in China soy was not consumed until they were able to ferment it. This understanding of traditional practices help contextualise food and maximise its benefits.

What Is Wrong With Eating Raw Maca Vs Gelatinized Maca

  • Raw maca accumulates mould that produces toxic aflatoxins. Aflatoxins are cancer causing molecules that attack our gut biome and can remain in the raw powder of maca unless it is cooked. Eating raw maca is risky and can cause serious harm to your health and upset your gut biome . In essence it can do more harm than good.
  • Raw maca root contains high levels of starch . Starch can often be hard to digest if eaten raw and may give some people symptoms such as bloating, gas, distention and abdominal discomfort.
  • Maca has always been traditionally cooked or heated and studies show that the health benefits of maca powder are not diminished by these processes, if anything they are enhanced. The active components responsible for most of the medicinal benefits of Maca are heat activated. So if you are eating raw maca you may not be getting the health benefits you desire.
  • Our own analysis demonstrated that a commercially available sample of raw maca in New Zealand had 2x higher bacterial concentrations and 8x higher mould concentrations compared to our activated sample. Raw maca is a health risk that does not need to be taken.
  • The texture and flavour of activated maca powder is more sweet, caramel and palatable. Raw maca has a more tart taste and often forms grainy starch sediments in solution when its not cooked, creating an unpleasant texture and flavour. If you want maca for your smoothies activated maca has it all and a much nicer taste.

Can The Stomach Change Size

The size of the stomach may vary throughout the day. It stretches and distends after meals. Gradually this food is digested and then emptied from the stomach into the duodenum of the small intestine. This causes the stomach to shrink. Overeating can therefore cause the stomach to be stretched to an extent where it can be uncomfortable, even painful and sometimes there can be a risk of a rupture if the stomach wall is weakened.

Long periods of hunger or fasting can cause the stomach to return to its normal size when empty. However, this does not actually shrink the stomach as is often thought. The more likely cause of a shrunken stomach is due to diseases which can cause a feeling that the stomach has become smaller, growths within the stomach that reduces its capacity or compression from outside of the stomach that limits its ability to distend.

The Benefits Of Maca Powder For Your Hormones

Last updated on by Alisa Vitti

What is Maca?

Maca root powder might be the latest superfood to fill up your Facebook feed, but its benefits are not exactly news. This ancient natural remedy happens to be very well researched and that research has revealed its hormone-balancing, hormonal symptom-soothing properties. Maca root powder is an adaptogen, which means it supports your whole endocrine system to produce the right amounts of hormones you need. Maca can help your body adapt to stressful life situations that might otherwise deplete your bodys hormone production and cause symptoms.

Maca root powder is a wonderful resource to have at hand, especially at certain critical times in your life when its properties can be the most beneficial. That said, maca is not for everyone and anyone, all of the time. Digging deeper and knowing more about this powerful supplement will help you to get the most out of it.

Does Maca cure hormone imbalance?

Although you may have heard some say that maca can solve all your period problems and regulate your cycles, I dont recommend seeing it as a miracle cure for all hormonal ills. I have never seen one product resolve a womans PMS, PCOS, cramps, acne, irrregular cycles or infertility issues on its own. Just adding in a supplement or one food, however super, unfortunately rarely works to help a woman overcome hormonal symptoms.

When should a woman use Maca?

  • Low energy levels
  • PMS symptoms

When you shouldnt take Maca

Avoid Maca If You Have Other Hormone

Maca Root for Autoimmune Disease

Maca extract may also act like estrogen in the body . That means its better to avoid this supplement if you have a hormone-sensitive condition such as breast cancer, endometriosis, uterine cancer, or uterine fibroids .

The treatment or management of many of these conditions requires patients to work with their healthcare providers to closely monitor and control estrogen levels. Maca could make these conditions and their symptoms worse by affecting hormone levels.

But that doesnt mean that all women should avoid the supplement or could be affected by it, even if this sounds scary. In fact, for healthy postmenopausal women, one small study has found that maca can improve sexual dysfunction and alleviate psychological symptoms like anxiety and depressionwithout affecting serum estradiol levels .

Theres anecdotal evidence that it may also help with hot flashes, but no research as of yet to back up those claims. It also helped their blood pressure.

  • Pregnant and nursing women.
  • Patients suffering with hormonal disorders, liver and kidney diseases.
  • People taking pain killers, anti-coagulants, blood thinners and birth control pills.
  • Children.

Safe dosage of Maca

There is actually no scientifically proven dosage limit. Taking 500 mg of maca thrice a day is generally considered safe. To prevent side effects it is recommended to take a week off and then continue using the herb.

Stop using maca supplements if any of the maca side effects are observed and consult the physician immediately to prevent complications. Care should be taken to read the labels while purchasing the supplements as certain pills contain 1000 mg per dosage.

Maca Is Likely Safe For Most People

All in all, very few people need to avoid maca. Its generally well-tolerated, and the earthy, nutty flavor of maca powder blends well with steamed milk or smoothies.

In fact, it isnt difficult to find rave reviews, and many people believe it tastes a bit like butterscotch. Although theres only anecdotal evidence, maca may cause a jittery feeling in some people that interferes with their sleep.

If you plan on trying the herbal supplement, it may be best to work into a morning smoothie or shake to allow plenty of time before bed.

Maca is a potent nutritional supplement that boasts the following healing and health secrets:

Maca Root: Are There Side Effects Or Precautions

Here at VegKitchen, we’re big fans of maca root, and want to make sure to cover all our bases. Maca, a root that belongs to the radish family, is most commonly available in powder form and considered a superfood rather than a supplement. Learn more about the benefits of maca, and get even more info by exploring our frequently asked questions about maca root.

In its long history of use, maca has shown no adverse side effects or toxicity, nor have there been cases of overdose. Maca’s general safety has been confirmed by the National Institute of Health in a study. You can read more about the subject at The Maca Team.

As with all good things, maca should be used in moderation, balanced with other natural foods. For example, it’s great in Quinoa-Maca Breakfast Bowls, shown just below.

General precautions

Stomach upset:Some maca users have reported stomach upset, heartburn, and indigestion, though this isnt a common occurrence. Though unpleasant, these effects arent harmful and will pass. If maca disagrees with you to such an extent, listen to your body and dont use it! There are other superfoods to explore, for instance, hempseed, which might be more agreeable to you.

Jitters:If youre just starting to use it, or use too much at once for your body weight, maca can make you feel jittery or wired, almost like caffeine might .Since maca is energizing, this is quite possible. If this happens, simply reduce the amount you’re taking.

How Does Maca Work In The Brain

Maca boosts brain health and function in several ways. But two in particular stand out.

  • Maca boosts anandamide. The Maca compound macamide is structurally similar to anandamide, a neurotransmitter that binds to cannabinoidreceptors in your brain.
  • Anandamide is known as the bliss molecule and its name comes from the Sanskrit ananda meaning joy, bliss or delight.

Studies have also revealed that Maca acts as fatty acid amide hydrolase inhibitor.FAAH is known to break down anandamide.

Researchers think that Maca provides its pharmacological effects by prolonging the presence of anandamide in your brain. And possibly binding to cannabinoid receptors.

Which may account for Macas ability to boost libido, regulate hormones, regulate metabolism, improve memory and act as an antidepressant.

  • Maca reduces anxiety & depression. Maca is well-known for boosting libido, sexual function, and reducing anxiety & depression in both men and women. But studies show Maca does this without having a direct effect on hormones.
  • Researchers at Victoria University in Australia conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 29 postmenopausal women.

No differences were found in serum concentrations of hormones from the baseline. But there was a significant reduction in scores for anxiety and depression.

The study concluded that Maca at 3.3 g per day reduced anxiety and depression independent of hormone levels.

    Choosing The Right Maca

For more tips about maca quality, I also asked Dr. Shawn Tassone, a Mind/Body specialist with special interest in Bioidentical Hormone Replacement and Integrative Medicine. Heres their advice on what to consider about how maca is made:

The manufacturing process is a key factor for the quality of maca. Dr. Meissner and others at La Molina University in Peru have perfected the gelatinization process, removing the fiber and starches that make it hard to digest for a small number of people. This means the bioavailability of the root is maximized and as a result, your body benefits from certain active constituents.

However, like most things, there are pros and cons to using heat in the processing as gelatinization does. Maca is a food a root and like other foods, when cooked, it loses certain enzymes and other heat-sensitive components. For example, the glucosinolates mentioned earlier are an important component of maca that help support breast health and the detoxification of estrogen. Glucosinolates are easily damaged by heat. So, depending on what constituents of maca you are looking to maximize, you might find that a raw version is a better fit.

    Gelatinized Maca Vs Raw Maca

    Dietary Supplements

Raw maca is like a sponge for mould and the longer it sits in humid conditions the more mould it attracts. The problem with the type of mould that loves maca is that it produces highly toxic chemicals called aflatoxins. Aflatoxins are carcinogenic and can have a serious long-term negative health effect on your body and gut bacteria, even in tiny doses. The only way to kill this mould and protect from the formation of toxins is by cooking maca to sanitise it, as the Inca have done for centuries. The safest form of maca to have is commercially called gelatinized maca or activated maca, which has gone through a high pressure steam to kill the mould and sanitise it. In addition gelatinized maca has a more sweet, caramel flavour and tastes much better than earthy raw maca. So when it comes to gelatinized maca vs raw maca, gelatinized maca has some clear benefits.

Mold growing on raw maca produces cancer causing aflatoxins, which is why it must be cooked

Are There Any Side Effects Of Maca

Maca is generally safe when consumed as a food. It is well tolerated by most healthy people and may be safe when taken as a supplement in amounts up to 3 grams a day for up to 4 months.

If, however, you are pregnant or breastfeeding or have underlying health conditions, you should talk to your doctor before taking maca supplements. Maca should be avoided by people with thyroid conditions because maca may cause thyroid gland enlargement .

Because maca can alter hormone levels, it should also be avoided by people with hormone-sensitive conditions, such as breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis. Maca has been reported to cause heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding and raised testosterone levels in some women.

Some people have reported side effects such as mood disturbances, altered menstrual cycles, cramp, gastritis, and sleep disturbances after maca consumption.

    Avoid If Pregnant Or Breastfeeding

Maca may help in several different ways while youre actively trying to get pregnant: cyclists taking it for stamina noticed a marked increase in sexual desire. And the root is able to improve sperm count and quality in adult healthy men without affecting testosterone levels in one clinical trial .

But while the supplement may set a couple up with the right conditions to get pregnant, women shouldnt take maca extract or root powder once they are expecting. And maca should be avoided throughout the breastfeeding process as well.

Even with the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in Peru circa 1533, maca became a regular among the Spanish nobility when the invaded Incas paid tribute to the Spaniards by sending them enormous quantities of this herb.
