Anatomy Of The Upper Back And Middle Back

Your upper and middle back starts from just below your neck and extends to about 5 inches below your shoulder blades.

Your thoracic spine gives your upper body strength and stability and helps you lift heavy objects. Your rib cage also protects many vital organs like your heart, kidneys, and lungs. According to Dr. William Blahd on WebMD, vertebrae in your middle back attach to your ribs which wrap around to your chest and are attached to your sternum.1

You have discs in between the vertebrae in your spine to absorb shocks and prevent the bones rubbing together. Also, many muscles between your ribs called intercostal muscles provide strength to your upper body and assist in breathing. There are also many nerve fibers that are attached to your spinal column.

An injury to the ligaments, ribs, nerves, or muscles in your middle back can affect your back and also radiate to other areas of your body. For example, back rib damage could also cause pain that wraps around your ribs to the front of your chest and breastbone. Or, the pain may radiate to your shoulder blade, neck, or even abdomen.

    Nature Of Shoulder Pain

    back of shoulder pain

Shoulder pain arising due to neck pain often has characteristic features, which when present, involvement of the neck should be suspected.

    • Pain in the neck region, radiating to the shoulders, arms and hands.
    • Burning, tingling sensation or shooting pain in shoulders and arms.
    • Shoulder and neck pain worsens on movement of neck.
    • Shoulder pain is relieved when neck is supported, rested or when lying down.
    • Using a neck brace, cold or warm compresses to the neck, provide relief to shoulder pain and reduce stiffness.

Some features that may be noted when shoulder pain is more local and may not be necessarily related to the neck include:

    • Dull aching shoulder pain, may be around arms but not the hands.
    • Shoulder pain worsens on movements of the shoulder and not of the neck.
    • Pain in shoulder is experienced after a fall or blow to the shoulder.
    • Shoulder pain is relieved after resting or supporting the arm.

The Association Between The Presence Of Pain And Body Composition

The unadjusted and adjusted analyses with logistic regression models for present pain are shown in Table;. In the unadjusted analysis with the univariate logistic regression model, lower age , female gender , higher total body fat ratio , lower total body water ratio and higher appendicular fat mass were significantly associated with the presence of neck and shoulder pain, and lower age was significantly associated with the presence of back pain, whereas no parameters were significantly associated with low back pain. However, in the age- and gender-adjusted analysis with the multivariate logistic regression model, only lower total body water ratio was significantly associated with the presence of neck and shoulder pain, whereas no significant association was observed between the presence of back pain or low back pain and body composition parameters.

    What Is A Pinched Nerve

Can Eye Glasses Cause Back, Neck, or Shoulder Pain?

A pinched nerve is a compressed nerve. Surrounding tissues that press on nerve roots can cause pain, numbness and tingling in different areas of your body. In many cases, the cause is a herniated disk slipping out between vertebrae in the spinal cord and pressing on the spinal nerve that goes down the leg.

Most pinched nerves originate in the neck , upper middle back or lower back . You can also experience pinched nerves in your hand, elbow and wrist .

Pinched nerves can affect several areas of your body:

    • A pinched nerve in the cervical spine can give you a stiff neck, and the pain and numbness can affect the shoulder and arm.
    • A pinched lumbar nerve in the lower back can cause pain in your back, hips, buttocks and legs.
    • Thoracic radiculopathy causes pain in your chest area. If you have severe chest pain, play it safe and call your healthcare provider.

A pinched nerve can be painful, but its usually treatable with rest, over-the-counter medication and physical therapy. Most people recover fully from a pinched nerve.

Back Pain After A Fall Or Injury: Fractures

Osteoporotic fractures of the vertebral body are the most commonly encountered fractures among primary care doctors.; These fractures are not always a result of great trauma and can, in some cases, cause few early symptoms.

    Any history of a fall, a lifting injury, a motor vehicle accident or any other trauma, when it is associated with immediate back pain, suggests a muscle or bone injury. If you are osteoporotic, this trauma may be minimal a sneeze, fall from a chair, or slip and fall in the home. Localized pain over the spinal column most commonly the thoracic spine is suggestive enough of compression fracture that x-ray is warranted.;

Localized pain over the involved vertebral level is usually present. Even patients with healthy bone can experience a compression fracture if the injury is significant enough. If you fall off of a roof, for instance, and end up with severe back pain in the middle of your lumbar spine, there’s a decent chance you could have a compression fracture, and you should get that x-rayed. Of course, please don’t do that!

    Avoid Lifting Heavy Items

Lifting heavy items can lead to injuries of your shoulder blades. Therefore, try not to lift heavy weights. It can trigger pain between your shoulder blades. Do not carry bags that are heavy on one side of the shoulder. It can put stress on that particular side of the muscles. Never bend and lift any heavy objects. Try to bend your knees before lifting. It will avoid putting too much pressure on your back. So, by taking precaution, you can avoid any injuries to your back shoulder.

Neck Trauma Can Be An Underlying Cause Of Leg Pain And Shoulder Pain

OUR health care system is very mechanistic. Shoulder Pain or leg is not always caused in the arm or leg but oftentimes it is coming from the neck. Each of these conditions can have their roots in postural adaptation that is caused by an upper cervical spine misalignment caused by a neck injury. In the following article we will outline common conditions that are under the heading of ,arm pain or leg pain and then discuss how an injury to your upper Cervical spine can be the underlying cause for each condition.

Common conditions that cause shoulder and arm pain:

While all of the syndromes listed above can cause arm pain and a plethora of other problems, current medical treatment does not try to uncover their cause but rather chooses to treat the end result of body dysfunction, the symptoms. Common methods of treatment are pain killers, physical therapy or surgeries. We have written several articles on each of these subjects in the past but thought it was important to cover each of these and explain how an upper Cervical injury can globally affect the body and lead to many of these conditions that have no known cause or cure in the medical literature.

How Pain Travels Along The Spine

Simple Stretches To Stop Neck Pain, Back Pain, Shoulder Pain, Leg Pain, & Foot Pain.

In order to answer this question, we need to talk a little bit about how pain signals travel up and down the spine. The spine is essentially a pathway through which our nerves travel. Nerves begin in the brain, travel down the spine, and then to all other areas of the body. When a herniated disc impedes on a nerve it can cause pain and other issues.

Pain in one area of the spine can be the result of an injury or condition that originates in another region of the spine. For example, a slipped disc in the neck, may lead to pain that radiates down through the arms, and chest. If the condition is severe enough, a herniated cervical disc can even lead to pain or weakness in the lower body.

Back pain and numbness in the extremities is nothing to be ignored. If left unchecked, these symptoms can lead to permanent nerve damage. Contact your doctor to set up an appointment if you have any of these symptoms.

Back And Rib Pain: Causes Of Upper To Middle Back And Rib Pain

Jenny Hills, Nutritionist and Medical Writer Health

Issues with your muscles, ligaments, or ribs in your back can often cause rib pain in the back. The middle and upper part of your spine is called the thoracic region and it helps to support your upper body. Irritation, inflammation, back rib injury, strained or pulled back muscles, or a herniated disc can all cause pain in ribs and back.

Back rib pain or middle back pain is less common than lower back pain. However, pain in your upper or middle back can cause a lot of discomfort in your day-to-day activities. Depending on the cause of mid-back pain, you may have dull aches and discomfort between your shoulder blades. Sometimes, the back pain can feel as sharp and jabbing discomfort that suddenly gets worse. Or, back muscle stiffness may make lifting your arms sore and painful.

There are many ways to get rid of back and rib pain without having to turn to painkillers. For example, hot or cold compresses can help to increase blood circulation and speed up the healing process. Or, you may have to improve your posture to ease nagging pain and prevent rib pain in your middle back. In many cases, stretching exercises strengthen and flex the strained muscles and ligaments in your middle back to relieve pain.
