What Do Large Breasts Indicate

Large Breasts Causing Upper Back Pain Chiropractic Treatment
  • Large breasts may indicate several changes. If your breasts got significantly bigger during your puberty, they may signal larger tissue to fat ratio in your breasts, especially if there was no significant increase in your body weight, or BMI during the same period. Heavy breasts may also point to an increase in the fat tissue percentage, especially if the increase in the size or the volume of your breasts happens during a period of weight gaining. In the third case, large breasts may be indicative of the hormonal changes that may be happening in your body as a part of the normal menstrual cycle. In this case, the breasts may feel plump, even swollen, and slightly painful to the touch. If this is the case, then the pain and discomfort are usually alleviated once the hormonal levels return to normal. Another reason you have heavy or saggy breasts is a history of pregnancies or breastfeeding. Whatever the case, it is possible to retrieve the breasts to their former size, be it by liposuction, breast lift, or removal of some of the breast tissue. Removing as little as 500gr of breast or fat tissue on both sides can have long-term results in posture correction and easing the pain.

What Problems Can Large Breasts Cause

  • Large breasts or macromastia may cause a variety of issues. Most problems reported by women with large breasts revolve around migraines, neck pain, shoulder pain, upper back pain, and lower back pain. Most of these pains are caused by the prolonged tension and the pulling effect of the large, heavy breasts. Overly large breasts, have been the source of these pains in a study on how breast reduction improves symptoms of macromastia and has a long-lasting effect. This study has shown that around 91% of women experienced a significant reduction in pain and strain after a Breast Reduction Mammaplasty surgery was performed. Dr. Mark Gittos can help assist with pain reduction and ease the discomfort caused by symptomatic macromastia.

Breast Reduction Surgery: A Remedy That Works

While physical therapy, ergonomic changes, and even pain medication are often a woman’s first line of defense, doctors agree that the only sure way to alleviate symptoms is with breast reduction surgery.

“Large breasts pose a clear and recognizable health problem and nothing works better than surgery: not losing weight, not physical therapy, not pain medication,” says Jewell.

And women seem to agree. In studies published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery a group of Swedish doctors wrote that women who had the surgery reported significant improvement in all areas of pain and discomfort.

According to the ASAPS, in 2004 more than 144,000 breast reduction surgeries were performed in the U.S. alone — an increase of more than 200% since 1997.

Why Do Large Breasts Cause Back Pain

Can Breast Reduction Surgery Improve My Quality of Life ...

As you might expect, more weight on the front of the body means the muscles at the back of the body have to work harder to keep you upright.

This extra work causes fatigue in those muscles, leading to pain.

When muscles are working hard for long periods, this has an effect on nearby joints.

Muscles in your spine cross over numerous joints, and when a muscle is working joints can be prevented from moving freely.

Joint stiffness is another common cause of pain associated with macromastia, particularly neck and back pain.

Some studies have reported that women with larger breasts have slightly different postures to those with smaller breasts.

In these studies researchers have found that women with larger breasts have a slightly accentuated forward curve at the base of their neck.

It is not clear whether this postural change alone is enough to cause pain, but it seems likely that it is a result of loading from breast tissue.

Ill-fitting bras can be a problem for women of all sizes and, fortunately, choice in this area seems to have improved in recent years.

What To Expect During Recovery From A Breast Reduction

After breast reduction, you might spend one night at the hospital to make sure everything is going well. Your surgeon might leave in a drain or two to drain out any leaky fluid or blood. These drains might be left with you for a few days when you leave the hospital. The change in size and shape of your breasts will be apparent immediately after surgery, however, it might take a couple of months to achieve full recovery. During the first few days after your surgery, you will naturally experience some pain around your breasts. This is usually controllable with oral painkillers that your surgeon will prescribe. You will also notice some bruising and swelling around your wounds. These are completely normal, and will slowly resolve slowly with time. You should take 10-14 days of home rest, during which you should avoid any strenuous activities.

What Are The Most Common Symptoms Related To Having Large Breasts

Large breasts, or macromastia, can be associated with a range of musculoskeletal symptoms.

Aside from bra-straps digging in, macromastia can contribute to neck pain, shoulder pain, and both upper and lower back pain. Headaches can also occur alongside neck pain.

Pain can be aching, burning, dull or sharp. Pain can move around, affecting your lower back on one day and your upper back on another day.

Sometimes the whole of your back/shoulders/neck can be affected at once. Usually pain is mostly symmetrical, affecting both the left and right hand sides of your body equally.

The intensity of symptoms can vary greatly from person to person, but also from day to day.

Day to day variations in symptoms reflect other influences on your pain, such as activity, stress levels and sleep.

Q: In Addition To Back Pain Can This Issue Cause Other Symptoms

Sara: The weight of the breasts pulling a woman forward can cause muscle strain.

And women with large breasts tend to have a more hunched-over appearance because of the forward pull.

Large Breasts: A Pain in the Neck – And Back and Shoulders When our body is out of alignment – like when it’s slouched or forward – the muscles have to work harder and our energy expenditure is higher. This can lead to tiredness or fatigue.

Do you have large breasts that are making it difficult to deal with certain aspects of your day-to-day life? Women with large breasts often find it difficult to perform certain tasks. While they may look great on the outside to some, the reality is, there is a high level of discomfort that comes from having overly large breasts. They can cause numerous problems like backaches, neck pain, shortness of breath, and problems with ones posture.

Large and heavy breasts prevent women from leading an active lifestyle, which is a necessity in itself to stay healthy. While physical therapy can help with all the pain associated with large breasts, rashes and infections under the breasts are unavoidable. Women start to feel stressed when nothing fits. Finding clothes that fit becomes difficult. And on top of that, the discomfort that comes with them can be unbearable.

Shoulder and breast pain can not only be uncomfortable, they can also be quite frightening. In most cases, such pain is caused by large breasts that are not properly supported. Another common cause is a pinched nerve, which is most successfully treated through surgery. In more severe cases, pain may be caused by a heart attack or other type of cardiovascular emergency. Those who believe they are suffering from a heart attack should seek medical assistance as soon as possible.

One of the most common causes of pain in the breasts and shoulders is, in fact, due to excessively large breasts. Women with large breasts are especially prone to pain when they wear bras that are not sized appropriately. In addition, those with weak back muscles may also experience pain because of their breasts. In most cases, those who suffer discomfort because of their large breasts can use proper posture and increase muscle mass in the back and core in order to increase support. Those who still suffer from shoulder and back pain may require reduction surgery in order to completely treat the condition.

Negative Symptoms Caused By Large Breasts

Overly large breasts come with a lot of baggage. The breasts themselves can be painful because of the excess weight. The weight of large breasts can cause neck, shoulder, and back pain. The heat and moisture trapped under the breast can cause chronic rashes and skin infections.

The excess weight of the breasts results in poor posture. Poor posture compresses the nerves pathway which causes numbness in the fingers, hands, and arms. Women with large breasts find it difficult to exercise or perform daily chores, which has its own set of negative consequences. Women may also experience shortness of breath and persistent migraines.

Q: Is Breast Reduction An Option Women Should Consider

Sara: Although breast reduction may be an option for some women with large breasts who are experiencing back pain, it is an invasive treatment which means it comes with risks. It can also be costly.

I recommend starting with more conservative measures like losing weight, increasing core strength, and increasing muscle strength in your back.

If you have tried these conservative measures and are still experiencing pain, its a good idea to discuss your symptoms with your primary care provider to see if treatment options such as a breast reduction are right for you.

Why Do My Ribs Hurt Under My Breast

  • Large and heavy breasts put extra strain on the torso. The torsal muscles have to work extra hard to compensate for an increase in the size and the weight of your chest. Furthermore, the increased weight will likely cause some stretching of the tissues holding the breasts, so that you may also experience pain above your breasts, as the supporting tissues are being stretched. Many women experience these issues. If you are one of them, you may consider a Reduction Mammoplasty to alleviate the discomfort. Usually, with age, the symptoms can worsen as the years take their toll and pull the breasts even further down. Dr. Mark Gittos offers consultations and assessing your specific situation. He also offers several plastic surgery procedures which can reduce the size of your breasts and the discomfort, all customised to your particular needs. Consult him to find out which procedure would be the best for you and which one will yield the long-term results you desire.

Your Bra Straps Cut Into Your Shoulders

First things first: make sure youre not wearing a bra thats too small for you. Most underwear retailers will be able to provide guidance on this. If youre wearing the right bra and you find the weight of your breasts is causing your bra straps to dig into your shoulders every day, then you may be a candidate for a reduction.

Breast uplift surgery is an alternative that can alter the shape and volume of your breasts, helping to fight gravity and stop your bra leaving deep grooves in the skin of your back.

Hi Eliaimee, I don’t know if this will help you any but…today I brought my cat and dog to the vet. I have a bag type kitty carrier…I had it slung over my shoulder with a pretty annoyed cat in it. Dog leash in other hand. Got a spike of pain in my chest and pain on my right shoulder and breast while driving. Of course, my heart went crazy. Anyways…now my left shoulder, armpit is a little sore now…so I totally pulled something.

Of course please do not use my kitty in bag story in lieu of real medical advice!

Eligibility Criteria For Nhs Breast Reduction

Do Large Breasts Really Cause Back Pain?

The availability of breast reduction surgery on the NHS varies, depending on the eligibility criteria decided by your local clinical commissioning group .

Some CCGs do not fund breast reduction surgery at all, and others fund it selectively if you fulfil certain criteria.

Generally speaking, you might be considered for breast reduction on the NHS if you have problems caused by having very large breasts, such as:

  • backache
  • rashes and skin infections under the breasts
  • grooves on the shoulders from bra straps
  • psychological distress, such as low self-esteem or depression
  • an inability to exercise or take part in sports

CCGs also tend to have additional criteria that may include the size of your breasts, your weight, your age, whether you smoke, and whether other options have been tried, but have not helped.

You can find out what the eligibility criteria are in your area from your GP or by contacting your local CCG.
