Can Invisalign Cause Shoulder Pain

Don't Miss

Reverse Pull Face Masks

Similar to upper jaw expanders, these face masks are sometimes used to correct an underbite. They also look like headgear braces, which are worn overnight. Metal braces are fixed to the upper back teeth, and they will be attached to the face mask. Your face mask is then wrapped around the head to pull your upper jaw back.

Available Teeth Crowding Treatment Options

Removable Invisalign aligners

The Invisalign system is a popular option if you’re looking to fix overcrowded teeth without braces using the world’s most advanced clear aligners. To find out if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign crowded teeth treatment, take our .

Traditional braces

Metal or ceramic brackets and wire fixed to upper and lower teeth can be used for fixing crowded teeth.

Porcelain veneers

Cosmetic dentistry such as porcelain veneers for crowded teeth may help improve aesthetics in mild overcrowding teeth cases.

A custom-made wire or clear plastic device can realign crowded teeth in some cases.

In extreme crowded teeth cases, your doctor may need to create extra space using palatal expansion or tooth extraction. More often than not, teeth removal happens in conjunction with a crowded teeth treatment such as the Invisalign system.

Removable appliance/plate

A custom-made wire or clear plastic device can realign crowded teeth in some cases.

Five Tips To Lessen Your Chance Of Developing Tmj

Orthodontics

  • Use a headset instead of holding the telephone between your shoulder and ear.
  • Practice good posture, especially at work, where its easy to forget about keeping your shoulders back while you hunch over a computer.
  • Dont open your jaw too widely.
  • If you smoke, quit.
  • See your dentist regularly for good oral hygiene, which lessens the chance of getting a jaw disorder.

Orthodontics And Clear Aligner Therapy

Traditional braces have been used for correction of teeth; however, many adults and teenagers prefer to wear clear aligners.  The fact that these devices are removable is an advantage, making eating and cleaning much easier. Another plus is that the aligners do not affect appearance. The treatment process is digital, making it quicker and predictable.

If teeth are worn out due to grinding, it is also important to rebuild them through crowns. Tooth grinding can require custom-fit mouthguards to help reposition the jaws, protect the teeth from wear and relieve muscle tension.

Are you aware that the body is interconnected and misalignment in one area can affect other areas? If you have constant pain and discomfort in the neck and shoulders, your bite can be the cause.

Talk to your orthodontist today.

The Connection Between Bad Bite Neck And Shoulder Pain

The bite provides a point of stabilization for the cervical spine. When the bite is not stable, it changes the alignment of the first and second vertebrae through the membranes that cover the brain and the spinal cord . Compression of the cervical spine manifests as neck pain; it can also radiate to shoulders and move down through the spine.

Several situations can cause bad bite and misalignment of teeth, jaws and jaw joints. Loss of the back teeth, irregular bite, worn out teeth, crowding, tilting, open bite and cross bite are a few examples that can cause bite issues.

Is Treating Sleep Apnea With Dentistry As Effective As Cpap

While Continuous Positive Airway Pressure is considered the gold standard of care for severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea , dental therapy has been recognized by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as first line of treatment for primary snoring, mild and moderate OSA, and severe OSA if CPAP is not an option. Studies have demonstrated that CPAP has almost 100% efficacy if worn by patients, but the degree of compliance is much lower than OAT. Therefore OAT compares favorably with CPAP for total treatment effectiveness.

Are The Treatments Or The Wearing Of The Appliance Painful

No. Most patients report that treatment is relatively painless.  The appliance is custom designed to your mouth and is readjusted often to ensure continued comfort. After the initial adjustment period, some patients tell us they forget they are even wearing the appliance.

  • Uncomfortable bite
  • An uneven bite, because one or more teeth are making premature contact

TMJ disorders can also cause a clicking sound or grating sensation when you open your mouth or chew. But if theres no pain or limitation of movement associated with your jaw clicking, you probably dont have a TMJ disorder

A thorough examination may involve:

  • A dental examination to show if you have poor bite alignment
  • An MRI  of the jaw area
  • Feeling the joint and connecting muscles for tenderness
  • Pressing around the head for areas that are sensitive or painful
  • Sliding the teeth from side to side
  • Watching, feeling, and listening to the jaw open and shut
  • X-rays to show abnormalities

Is It True That Wisdom Teeth Can Cause Headaches And Neck Pain

In short, absolutely. As wisdom teeth slowly grow into maturation, they can have some potentially significantand painfuleffects on the rest of your body. With decreased room to grow, wisdom teeth create natural tension. This slowly building tension can spread from your gums, into your jaw, and across other areas of your body.

Problems That Invisalign Corrects

You may suffer from low self-esteem, tooth decay, poor oral health, weak speech, and even nutritional problems if your teeth arent properly aligned. Although metal braces are a popular way to create a straight smile, they can be unattractive and uncomfortable. Plus, there are many advantages to correcting a crooked smile.

Straight teeth offer confidence and happiness and help prevent oral health problems. Clear invisible aligners, called Invisalign®, are widely available and not just for kids. Doris Giraldo, DDS, of New Dimension Dentistry in Midtown East, Manhattan, offers Invisalign® clear aligners as an alternative to braces.

Vertigo Can Be Caused By Jaw Joint Disorder

    January 31, 2017

If you experience dizziness , this off-balance sensation can place you in an unsure frame of mind, not to mention put your safety at risk.

The latin origin of the word vertigo is a whirling round. Vertigo is observed in a number of diseases and causes dizziness and a loss of balance. It can also cause confusion, nausea, lightheadedness, and the feeling of being pulled downward.

Although the cause is often unknown in many cases, problems involving the inner ear are a common cause of vertigo. In addition to a head injury, migraines and lengthy period of bedrest, other contributing factors include:        Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo         Menieres disease         Vestibular neuritis         Labyrinthitis         TMJ disorder

The inner ear is the common culprit in the majority of vertigo cases. However, the position and fluid motion of your jaw joints and bite alignment are often-overlooked as contributing factors.  Research has found that disorders of the temporo-mandibular joint can lead to balance disparities as well as cause nausea and vision problems.

Recent research has found that vertigo and TMJ Disorder have a deeper correlation than once thought. In these cases, bite misalignment is resolved to reduce tension in connected jaw muscles. This can often eliminate the symptom of dizziness.

    What Is A Occlusal Splint

An occlusal splint is a diagnostic and treatment appliance of clear acrylic plastic which fits over the upper teeth. The side of the palate, insides, and just the tops of the teeth are covered. Various clasps at the back of the mouth assist retention. A precise model of the upper and lower teeth is made from accurate impressions. A registration of jaw relationships at the desired treatment position is secured. The required laboratory work takes from 10 days to 2 weeks.. Eye tooth extensions insure that jaw separation occurs in side to side movements. For the first day or so after the fitting appointment, your appliance may seem to fit tightly, but the teeth move slightly to an accommodation position. Maximum benefits are provided by maximum wearing. If it is not convenient, the appliance may be removed for eating.

    Treat Mouth Sores Right Away

Sometimes as your mouth gets adjusted to the feel of the aligners, your tongue and cheeks may get irritated and even develop mouth sores. You can use dental wax to protect some of the cuts and sores, but if that isnt helping enough, ask your orthodontist to smooth out any rough edges with a nail file. You should also keep on hand a peroxide-based mouthwash to help with the healing process and to prevent any infections.

    Candidates For Invisalign Clear Braces

If your tension headaches do not subside, its possible that Invisalign is not the best option for you. Invisalign is designed to correct mild malocclusions, including:

    · Crowded teeth

    · Underbite

    · Crossbite

Invisalign is also a good option for adults whove had mild relapses following traditional braces.

If you have more moderate to severe bite problems, a different orthodontic treatment may be better suited to your needs. Your dentist should examine your mouth to determine if Invisalign is right for you.

How Do They Cause This Pain

Headaches come as a result of tension and irregular pressure in your jaw. As wisdom teeth grow in, they may cause your other teeth to shift in order to make room. Sometimes this results in what dentists call a gum pouch. This is a small, painful pouch that results from an infection caused by a wisdom tooth trying to come through.

As a result, your jaw position and your bite may be forced to change in an attempt to avoid unnecessary pain. While adjusting your jaw position may save you from biting down on a swollen and painful gum pocket, you may be unknowingly causing further harm. Changing your bite pattern could shift your jaw joints into an unnatural position.

Those shifted jaw joints may become swollen and painful, and could get pushed against your ear muscles every time those joints are flexed. This is what causes a headachedirect and unnatural pressure against ear muscles due to a shifted jaw position and bite pattern.

Increased tension in your jaw can certainly spread to your neck, causing neck pain as well. That pressure can quickly spread from the back of your jaw to your lower neck, increasing overall pain, and perhaps inflaming headache symptoms, as well. Headaches and neck pain can be sure signs that a wisdom tooth has been infected, and needs removal.

    The Invisalign Clear Aligner System

If this describes you, youll be happy to know another option exists – the Invisalign clear aligner system! Invisalign is our most popular alternative to traditional braces, and it allows us to give you the same beautiful results, but without the brackets, metal, and wires. Instead, Invisalign uses a series of clear, custom-made plastic aligners to straighten your smile. We create these removable aligners by generating a precise 3D image of the teeth using x-rays and digital impressions. Although the aligners themselves look like simple plastic trays, they are constructed of a special thermoplastic resin thats strong enough to move your teeth into alignment.

When worn as directed, Invisalign clear aligners have proven to be just as effective as traditional braces at successfully treating a number of common dental issues, including:

The Benefits Of An Aligned Bite

As we mentioned before, the concept of orthodontic treatment is not new. Throughout history, people have sought ways to correct the alignment of their teeth not just because straight smiles have undeniable visual appeal, but also because theyre easier to protect from infection and disorders that stem from an improper bite, such as TMD .

If you have teeth that are crowded, healthy habits like flossing can be more difficult. There are ways to work around crooked teeth, but the risk of bacteria being able to evade your floss and toothbrush to infect your gums or cause decay is still elevated. Additionally, if the way your teeth connect isnt ideal for your jaw, you may experience TMJ dysfunction, which can cause painful symptoms like chronic headaches and migraines, myofascial pain that extends to your neck, shoulders, and even your back, and excessive wear on your teeth.

A healthy bite helps you chew food, speak, and smile without discomfort. If you werent born with one, we can help your bite shift with a treatment thats improved the smiles and lives of over 5 million people and counting!

    Physical Trauma Or Broken Jaw

Physical assault in the face, vehicular collisions, sports injuries, and accidental falls can cause fractures or dislocations in the jawbone. If youve encountered any of these mishaps, you might have a broken jaw that will become uneven or misaligned in the future.

Some of the symptoms of a broken jaw may include:

    • Facial pain
    • Pain in the front of the ear that gets worse with movement
    • Bruising and swelling of the face
    • Bleeding from the mouth
    • Difficulty chewing and opening the mouth widely
    • Jaw stiffness

Medical Orthodontics Can Improve Sinus Problems

Apart from improving the appearance of your smile, orthodontic treatment can also improve your general health, since there is a direct relationship between jaws, teeth and airway.

A bad bite can influence different areas and conditions in the body, hence, correction of bite problems through orthodontic treatment can alleviate pain and other symptoms of chronic conditions, including sinus problems. Narrow arches can be expanded, teeth and jaws can achieve better alignment to create more space in the mouth, in the nasal cavity and in the sinuses, alleviating sinus problems.

If there are teeth that are too close to the sinus, they can be shifted down to improve sinus conditions.

People tend to think that orthodontics is only for teenagers, but this is not the case. The option to correct teeth through clear aligner therapy is well suited for adults, since it does not affect everyday life. Using a computer software, custom-made plastic trays are 3D printed and each set is used for about 3 weeks, after which it is replaced by a new set. Thus, teeth are gently brought into better alignment.

If you suffer from chronic sinusitis, ask your dentist about possible dental causes and get your bite checked.

    Neck And Shoulder Pain

For many people, muscle tension is an everyday problem, especially in the neck and shoulder. These areas are very important for the whole body, since they help carry the weight of the head.

Dental issues and postural problems are among the most common causes for chronic pain, tension and tightness in the shoulder and neck areas, which can also spread to the back, hips and legs.

Okay So What Can I Do About The Pain

The good news is that the pain will subside with time, as you get used to this new reality. It might flare back up whenever you switch to a new set of retainers, but within a few days you’ll be doing just fine.

Until then, use my tips for dealing with the pain of clear aligners and invisible braces.

    Protect Your Tongue

During your first week of treatment, you may experience pain from Invisalign cutting your tongue. These mouth sores are not fun, so be proactive in preventing them. Learn how to use dental wax on some of the rougher edges, which can be a real easy fix especially if you’re on the go. If dental wax doesn’t cut it, an emery board or nail file can be used to smooth out any really rough patches, or ask your Orthodontist to file it down for you.

Still, all this maintenance won’t prevent every sore, so I recommend keeping a bottle of peroxide-based mouthwash in your medicine cabinet. It is specially formulated to heal minor oral irritations during orthodontic treatment, and provides Invisalign pain relief with a refreshing, foamy effect that really hits the spot

    Embrace the pain

Think about how and why your muscles ache after a good workout or activity. It’s painful, but there’s a certain pride in having earned it. I hope you’ll feel the same way about your clear aligner treatment, because it’s worth it to achieve your ideal smile.

    Ringing Ears Or Hearing Loss

This can be caused by tension in associated structures due to clenching and grinding and has been shown to be relieved when the joints are decompressed and the bite is supported.

Some studies show a link with up to 80% of TMD cases resulting in ear symptoms like excessive ear wax, hearing loss or sounds of fullness or ringing in the ears. Most TMD patients who complain of ear related symptoms often find relief in therapeutic treatment.

Why Does Improper Jaw Function Affect Other Parts Of The Body

When the jaw does not function properly, muscle spasms and trigger points occur. This tension travels like a chain reaction through other parts of the body, most commonly to the neck and shoulders. When these trigger points are released, one of the first things that people feel is deep relaxation throughout the face and jaw, as well as the neck and shoulders.

Can I Bite Through Invisalign If I Grind My Teeth At Night

    About Orthodontics Holmdel Dentist

» Can I Bite Through Invisalign if I Grind My Teeth at Night?

There are a number of reasons you may grind your teeth at night. Stress, anxiety, caffeine, alcohol, and sleep disorders may all lead to teeth grinding. If you grind your teeth at night and are undergoing Invisalign treatment, you may be wondering whether youll be able to bite through Invisalign aligners.

This depends on how hard you bite. If you bite very hard, you may be able to bite through your aligners at night. Fortunately, you will likely adapt to your aligners and your urge to bite will subside over time.

Also, your aligners should be able to stand up to the pressure of biting. Since you only wear each set of aligners for a two week period, you wont have a great deal of time to cause extensive damage to them through biting. As Raleigh Family Dentist office Wells Family Dental Group explains, it is better to address an issue early rather than letting it get worse.

If we find that your teeth are not moving properly due to biting, we may instruct you to bite on a plastic foam cylinder to ensure your teeth are fully engaged in the aligner and expedite your treatment. In the event your biting turns into a serious problem, Dr. Gladwell will work with you to come up with a solution.

What Are The Effects On Speech

When orthodontic patients wear their teeth aligners, many experience problems with speech. This occurs mainly because the edges of the teeth aligners press against the lips and the tongue interfering with speech. Many patients experience this effect during the beginning of their treatment. However, as the patients progress to subsequent treatment trays, they realize that the trays do not interfere with speech as much as they used to in the beginning.

What Does Getting An Inlay Involve

An inlay procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate impressions that will be used to create your custom inlay and a temporary restoration.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will remove any decay and/or old filling materials. The space will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared, shaping the surface to properly fit an inlay restoration. A temporary filling will be applied to protect the tooth while your inlay is made by a dental laboratory.

At your second appointment your new inlay will be carefully and precisely cemented into place. A few adjustments may be necessary to ensure a proper fit and that your bite is comfortable.

You will receive care instruction at the conclusion of your treatment. Good oral hygiene practices, a proper diet, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new inlay.
