Humira and joint pain

Aug 17, 2012·

Here I am, 3 ½ weeks after my last Humira injection and Im doing okay. Just okay. The one thing I really miss about Humira was the energy it gave me. The fatigue that goes along with having any autoimmune disease is incredibly draining. I was so exhausted a few days ago I stayed in my pjs all day. I havent felt that wiped out in a long time.

So far the spondylitis in my lower spine has remained at bay, but my neck is another thing. I still wake up some mornings unable to turn my head, but thats really nothing new. I have to work through the pain and the kinks, but eventually it loosens up. My psoriatic arthritis is still the same; Im still achy and flakey and there have been several days Ive had specific joints be extremely sore.

My tummy isnt 100% recovered, but it feels SO MUCH BETTER. The IBS issues the Humira was causing were unbearable. Ill spare you all of the details, but I will tell you I looked like I was 4 or 5 months pregnant because of the bloating some days. It wasnt fun.

At this point in time, its my plan to try to remain Enbrel free for as long as I can. Im just taking it one day at a time.

Ill keep you posted.xoxo,

Fda Announces Enhanced Safety Surveillance For Humira

In a second 2011 safety communication, the FDA announced that it is requiring manufacturers of TNF blockers to perform enhanced safety surveillance for TNF blockers.

As part of the enhanced safety surveillance, manufacturers must conduct in-depth follow-up of reports of cancer cases and submit all reports of cancer in pediatric and young adult patients to the FDA within 15 days of becoming aware of the report. The manufacturers must also provide annual summaries and assessments.

This type of safety surveillance is important for our improved understanding of malignancies in pediatric and young adult patients treated with TNF blockers because it will allow FDA to more completely capture and analyze all reported malignancies based on more complete and consistent reports, the FDA said.

The agency says it will periodically re-evaluate the enhanced surveillance requirement through 2021.

Try A Different Form Or Dosing

Several people told us that switching to the injectable form of methotrexate seemed to help with nausea. For example, Matt B. told us on Instagram that taking 25 milligrams of methotrexate tablets for more than six years destroyed my stomach and bowels. After he switched to an injectable form of methotrexate, my stomach is back to normal after about a year. I have had nausea on both tablets and injection, but the injection is a little easier to handle.

Another strategy, which may apply only to certain medications, is to split the dose or increase the dose slowly. Dr. Domingues recommends splitting his patients leflunomide dose to relieve diarrhea, and he does this sometimes with methotrexate. So as opposed to taking your six methotrexate pills at the same time, we do three in the morning and three at night. This has not necessarily been shown to be efficacious for nausea, though, he notes.

Tnf And Your Immune System:

When your immune system detects something out of whack in your body it activates compounds designated tumor necrosis factors . Whether it is a bacterial infection or a viral invasion, TNF is created to fight off the foreign invaders. If you come down with the flu your body will make TNF as one of the first lines of defense to combat the virus .

If tumor and necrosis caught your attention you are also on target. Necrosis comes from the greek word nekrosis, which means becoming dead or the death of cells or tissues. In other words, tumor necrosis factor has anti-tumor activity and may play a key role in cancer detection and therapy .

Effectiveness For Plaque Psoriasis

Clinical studies have shown that Humira is effective for treating plaque psoriasis. These studies looked at adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

In one study, Humira was compared with a placebo . Among people who received 40 mg of Humira every other week, 71% reported that their psoriasis symptoms eased by at least 75%. This is in comparison with the placebo group, in which only 7% of people reported that their symptoms eased by 75% or more.

Humira For Plaque Psoriasis

The Food and Drug Administration approves prescription drugs such as Humira to treat certain conditions. Humira is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults thats chronic .

Plaque psoriasis is a condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body, causing inflammation . As a result, plaques form on the skin and are covered by silvery scales. The plaques are often painful and itchy. Symptoms of plaque psoriasis tend to worsen during times called flare-ups and improve during periods known as remission.

To use Humira, you must be eligible for or systemic therapy. Phototherapy uses light to treat plaque psoriasis. And systemic therapy refers to medications that work through your entire body to help stop plaques from forming. Humira is meant for people with plaque psoriasis that would benefit more from Humira than it would from other systemic therapies. The drug is also for people who cant use other systemic therapies.

In addition, Humira is approved for other conditions, which are discussed below in the section called Other uses for Humira.

Humira treats plaque psoriasis by blocking a protein called tumor necrosis factor . This decreases the activity of your immune system, leading to a reduction in the number and severity of skin plaques.

Soothe Your Stomach With Peppermint Or Ginger

There is some data that peppermint can help minimize an upset stomach, though most of the research has been done on people with irritable bowel syndrome . Still, researchers from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston found studies that showed peppermints beneficial effects on a queasy stomach. And several patients told us on Facebook and Instagram that along with other strategies like taking their meds at night, they ate peppermints, drank peppermint tea, or sniffed peppermint oils, which seemed to help their nausea.

Theres science behind the claims that ginger can quell nausea too. An Australian study in 2017 found that the root helped chemotherapy patients with treatment-induced nausea. An Iranian study found that eating ginger could help post-operative patients with their upset stomachs. But no one has done clinical studies that show what dose or type of ginger is most effective.

Shaz S. told us on Facebook that methotrexate made her really gassy, but now she drinks several cups of lemon and ginger every day and its no longer an issue. Another potential stomach soother: drinking ginger ale.

As always, even with something as benign as ginger or peppermint tea, be sure to mention it to your rheumatologist.

Lymphomas Leukemia And Melanoma

In June 2008, the FDA announced it was investigating 30 reports of cancer in children and young adults who were treated with TNF blockers for Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, Crohns disease or other diseases.

Reports of cancer were submitted to the FDAs Adverse Event Reporting System over 10 years, beginning in 1998 after the first TNF blocker hit the market through April 29, 2008. The cases involved children and young adults who took TNF blockers with methotrexate, azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine.

About half the cancers were lymphomas, including both Hodgkins and non-Hodgkins lymphoma; other cancers reported included leukemia, melanoma and solid organ cancers.

In a follow-up announcement in August 2009, the FDA said it had completed its analysis and concluded that there is an increased risk of lymphoma and other cancers associated with the use of TNF blockers in children and adolescents. The agency added the new safety information to the boxed warning for Humira and the other TNF blockers.

In addition, the FDA added new warnings about leukemia and new-onset psoriasis in patients treated with TNF blockers.

Is It Safe To Have Surgery While Im Taking Humira

rheumatism treatment does being overweight cause arthritis ...

Theres not a lot of research on whether its safe to have surgery while taking Humira.

One potential side effect of Humira is an increased risk of serious infections,* such as tuberculosis . This is because Humira can weaken your immune system. Having surgery also places you at a higher risk for infection. So theres concern that having surgery while taking Humira can raise your risk further.

In a review of clinical studies, people with RA who stopped taking drugs called tumor necrosis factor blockers for at least one dose before surgery had a lower risk of infection.

If you plan on having surgery while taking Humira, talk with your doctor. Theyll help determine the right treatment plan for you.

for serious infections. A boxed warning is the most serious warning from Food and Drug Administration . For more information, see FDA warnings at the beginning of this article.

Will I Have Withdrawal Symptoms If I Stop Using Humira

Humira itself isnt likely to cause withdrawal symptoms. However, if you stop using Humira, theres a strong possibility that symptoms of your condition will return or worsen.

For example, in clinical studies, 22% of people with hidradenitis suppurativa who stopped taking Humira had a flare-up of their HS symptoms after they ended their treatment.

If you have questions about ending your use of Humira, talk with your doctor. You shouldnt stop taking the drug on your own.
