If Youve Been Experiencing Chest Pain Its Remotely Possible That The Cause Could Be Coming From Your Neck

Why Texting Can Cause Herniated Discs, Sciatica, Pinched Nerves and Neck Pain And How To Prevent It

However, its far more likely to be coming from either acid reflux, a musculoskeletal problem in the chest region, or a problem with your heart.

Chest pain actually has a wide variety of many causes including bronchitis, pneumonia and muscle spasms from the workout the day before.

Heart problems that cause chest pain include clogged or spasming arteries, rhythm disturbances and valvular narrowing.

How Is Arm Pain Treated

Electromyography and nerve conduction velocity tests are useful to determine which nerve is affected, and how severely it is damaged or irritated. The test will often clarify specifically where a nerve is being compressed whether it is a spinal nerve in the neck or a peripheral nerve in the shoulder, elbow, forearm, or wrist.

For patients whose symptoms are not alleviated through other treatments such as physical therapy or injections, surgery to remove or repair the damaged portion of nerve may be necessary.

Avoiding Injury: Tennis Pickleball & Racquetball

Though these types of sports have different rules, the risksfor injury are very similar. Most injuries stem from issues in one of three categories:Equipment, Mechanics or Overuse. Check out these tips from Dr. Kent Timmto stayoff the bench and avoid injury!

EQUIPMENT

  • Improper footwear 30% of leg injuries in racquet sportsstem from the wrong shoes. Track shoes, basketball shoes or general sneakersare not made for racquet sports. Get fitted for proper shoes for your sport of choice!
  • Racquet grip size No matter your chosen sport, a racquetthat is two big or two small will throw off a number of mechanics throughout yourbody and can lead to injury. Research sizing that is best suited to you beforepurchasing a racquet
  • String tension For sports like tennis that use a racquetwith strings, you may be surprised to hear that the tension level affects yourperformance! String tension affects the force applied to your hand, wrist, armand shoulder, so string tension that is too strong or two weak can lead toinjury

MECHANICS

  • Adapt for your sport different playing surfaces, differentrules and different equipment mean you have to adapt your body mechanics to thesport you are playing. If youre used to playing tennis, racquetball will feel verydifferent and will require a change in body mechanics
  • Get help a certified coach or sports physical therapist canhelp improve stroke mechanics and footwork

What Treatments Are Available

Healing begins with self-care and nonsurgical strategies . The goal is to correct the problem, restore function, and prevent re-injury.

Self care: Neck pain often resolves with rest, ice or heat, massage, pain relievers, and gentle stretches. Reduce muscle inflammation and pain using an ice pack for 20 minutes several times a day during the first 48 to 72 hours. Thereafter, a warm shower or heating pad on low setting may be added to relax the muscles. A short period of bed rest is okay, but more than a couple of days does more harm than good. If self-care treatments aren’t working within the first couple of days, see your doctor.

Medications: Many people get pain relief with over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen. A muscle relaxant may be prescribed for spasms. If pain is severe, an analgesic may be prescribed that can be taken with the NSAID or muscle relaxant.

Steroids can reduce the swelling and inflammation of the nerves. They are taken orally as a Medrol dose pack tapered over a five-day period or by an injection directly into the pain source . Steroids may provide immediate pain relief within 24-hours.

Surgery: Surgery is rarely needed unless you have muscle weakness, a proven disc herniation, cervical cord compression, problems with balance and coordination, or severe pain that does not resolve after a reasonable course of nonsurgical treatment.

Is There A Disc Or Disk In The Jaw Joint

Herniated disc

Your jaw joints have paddings or cushions called Articular Discs or Articular Disks. The Articular discs or the jaw joints are oval-shaped plates made of fibrous connective tissues found between the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone and the mandibular or jaw joints condyle.

An articular disc or articular disk connects to the Pterygoideus muscle, articular capsule, and the jaw joints retrodiscal tissues. An articular disk or disc is much thicker towards the rims or edges where it connects to the articular discs soft tissues of the jaw joint.

They separate the jaw joint the spacer provides cushioning or shock aberrances as needed during chewing or talking. Articular discs of the jaw joints are fibrocartilagenous structures that run anteroposteriorly and superoinferiorly

Articular discs of the jaw joints are the most common causes of TMJ pain. The good news is that we can treat it. This unique arrangement enables it to provide the shock assurances needed during daily functions. However, when subjected to trauma or increased stress, they can get damaged. The exact mechanisms of injury to the jaw discs are not fully understood.

A damaged or injured fibrocartilage fiber leads to internal disorders known as a derangement. Internal derangement of the articular disc is the leading cause of a slipped disc in the jaw.

Avoid Lifting Heavy Items

Lifting heavy items can lead to injuries of your shoulder blades. Therefore, try not to lift heavy weights. It can trigger pain between your shoulder blades. Do not carry bags that are heavy on one side of the shoulder. It can put stress on that particular side of the muscles. Never bend and lift any heavy objects. Try to bend your knees before lifting. It will avoid putting too much pressure on your back. So, by taking precaution, you can avoid any injuries to your back shoulder.

Pinched Nerve From Degeneration And Bone Spurs

In middle aged and older people, the degenerativedisc disease can cause bone spurs to form around the nerve roots. This usuallyoccurs inside the foramen — the opening in the cervical spine where the nerveroot leaves the spine to travel into the arm. If these bone spurs get big enoughthey may begin to rub on the nerve root and irritate the nerve root. This causesthe same symptoms as a herniated disc. The irritation causes pain to run downthe arm, numbness to occur in the areas the nerve provides sensation to andweakness in the muscles that the nerve supplies.

Pinched Nerve From A Herniated Disc

Cervical Herniated Disc Pain Causing Depression, Anxiety – Treatment

Bending the neck forward and backward, and twisting left and right, placesmany kinds of pressure on the vertebrae and disc. The disc responds to the pressurefrom the vertebrae by acting as a shock absorber. Bending the neck forward compressesthe disc between the vertebrae. This increased pressure on the disc may causethe disc to bulge toward the spinal canal and the nerve roots.

Injury to the disc may occur when neck motion puts too much pressure on thedisc. One of the most painful injuries that can occur is a herniateddisc. In this injury, the tear in the annulus portion of the intervertebraldisc is so bad that part of the nucleus pulposus squeezes out of the centerof the disc. The annulus can tear or rupture anywhere around the disc. If ittears on the side next to the spinal canal, when the nucleus pulposus squeezesout, it can press against the spinal nerves. Pressure against the nerve rootfrom a herniated disc can cause pain, numbness, and weakness along the nerve. There is also evidence that the chemicals released from the ruptured disc mayirritate the nerve root, leading to some of the symptoms of a herniated disc– especially pain.

Cervical Herniated Disc Diagnosis

Your spine doctor will consider your medical history and symptoms and give you a physical examination, during which the doctor will look for limitations of movement in the spine, problems with balance, and signs of pain, as well as any loss of extremity reflexes, muscle weakness, sensory loss, or abnormal reflexes that may suggest spinal cord involvement.

After a physical examination, your doctor can use a variety of tests to get a closer look, including X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, CT myelogram, or bone scans.

Causes Of Degenerative Disc Disease In The Neck

Simple wear and tear is the usual culprit responsible for cervical degenerative disc disease. Some will suffer more than others due to lifestyle factors and genetic variations which predispose them to more extensive damage on acute and chronic trauma. As the discs between intervertebral bodies begin to degenerate, the whole cervical spine becomes less flexible leading to neck pain and stiffness in the neck and back. Those who practice yoga regularly and long-term are less likely to suffer from severe disc degeneration in the cervical spine compared to those who do not, most likely as result of improved flexibility and strength of the muscles supporting the spine . The effect of long-term yoga practice on the lumbar spine was not considered significant by Jeng , but there was some evidence of benefit in most of the study group.

How Can I Tell If Its Back Pain Or Sciatica

Sciatica

Sciatica is a specific type of back pain that is reported as being highly uncomfortable. However, it is also fortunately very simple to diagnose. People with sciatica experience pain along their sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in your body.

The sciatic nerve begins at your lower back and then splits at the base of your spine to extend further down to your buttocks, legs, and finally to the bottom of each foot. The sciatic nerve can become compressed or irritated, which causes a shooting, stinging, or burning sensation in your lower back, buttocks, legs, or feet.

Back pain

Back pain can be caused by an array of different conditions. For example, you may experience back pain due to poor posture, a motor vehicle accident, or a lifting injury. The treatment plan that your Lawrence, KS physical therapist sets up for you, will depend on how you developed the back pain, in addition to its exact location and your past medical history.

Back pain can be described as acute, meaning it is short-term, or chronic, meaning it is long-term .

A Surprising Link: The Dental Back Pain Connection

The Infamous Disc Herniation A Cause of Major Back Pain

If you suffer from chronic back pain but cannot determine the reason, the underlying cause could be surprising: a dental issue.

This unexpected connection is an example of referred pain, or pain in an area of the body other than where it originates. have shown that referred pain is due to the way the bodys nerve fibers converge on and send signals up and down the spinal column. These signals make it so that dysfunction or pain towards the top of the spinal column, such as a toothache, can influence the structures below, such as the upper and low back, and vice versa.

Referred pain can also result from the ways in which our muscles interact with and support each other. A common example is the link between the jaw disorder, or temporomandibular joint disorder, and chronic back pain. TMJ occurs when the hinge that connects the jawbone to the skull dysfunctions, causing pain in the jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement.

Patients with TMJ often complain of backaches, because when the jaw is out of alignment, it causes the neighboring muscles to exert extra effort. The muscles in the neck, shoulders and back work to correct the misalignment, and when these muscles tire, the surrounding areas can experience chronic pain.

Unexpected Symptoms Of A Herniated Disc

The bones that form the spinealso known as vertebraeare cushioned by discs. These discs act as shock absorbents for the spine. A herniated disc occurs when a fragment of the disc nucleusa gel-like substance that cushions the boneis pushed out of the outer layer of the disc and into the spinal canal through a tear or rupture. This displacement causes the disc to press on spinal nerves which can cause intense pain. However, the signs of a herniated disc can also vary from person to person, with men being twice as likely to experience a herniated disc than women.

Most cases of herniated disc occur in the lower back, but this condition also frequently occurs in the neck. Some patients may find this confusing as the symptoms dont match up to the cause of the pain. So what are the symptoms of a herniated disc?

Surprisingly, the most common symptoms of a herniated disc tend to be pain in the arm or leg. If the herniated disc is in the lower back, pain will typically be most intense in the buttocks, thigh, and calf. Shoulder and arm pain are typically felt when the herniated disc is in the neck.

In addition to feeling pain in the arm or leg, there are other signs of a herniated disc that are often overlooked because they might not be outright painful. What could a herniated disc feel like?

Spinal Disc Prolapse C6

Along with C5/C6, this level is the most commonly implicated in a variety of pain syndromes and some often illogical neurological symptomatic expressions. C6/C7 is a small and delicate intervertebral level which is virtually guaranteed to look beat up on x-ray and MRI films, especially as a patient ages. The region is prone to not only disc herniations, but also a loss of normal lordotic spinal curvature and a build up of osteophyte material enacted by the osteoarthritic processes.

However, even with its predisposition to all these common diagnostic scapegoats, pain in the neck, arms and upper back is blamed on herniated discs at C6/C7 far more often than it ever truly occurs. Remember, in order for pain to result, no matter how severe the herniation looks, the disc material must compress a nerve tissue directly or irritate it through chemical radiculitis.

Herniated Disc C6-C7 Experiences

I was shocked to see my own horrific looking herniation at this level after undergoing a cervical MRI in 2008. My C6/C7 is pressing deeply into the actual spinal cord, creating a disturbing image on the diagnostic film. The effect was the typical nocebo and enacted symptoms in me that I never had prior to discovery. Luckily, I understand this negative conditioning process and used the alternative medical techniques of knowledge therapy to regain control of my life, despite still having some degree of fear concerning this drastic disc pathology.

Treatments For Herniated Disc

If you are diagnosed with a herniated disc, you can try the following five treatments, in order from the least to most invasive.

  • Physical therapy: Physical therapists can help you improve your posture, strengthen the core of your body, and maintain a healthy weight. They will give you specific exercises to lengthen the spine to take pressure off the vertebrae.
  • Chiropractic care: Chiropractic care can help to adjust and align an injured spine. Chiropractors often work with physical therapists to help strengthen the muscles along the spine.
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs : NSAIDs can help decrease inflammation and pain, especially as you begin physical therapy.
  • Epidural steroid injections or nerve blocks: These types of injections can be used as a diagnostic tool as well as a way to ease pain. It does not fix the structural causes of the herniated disc but can be helpful in rehabilitation.
  • Surgery: If patients continue to experience pain after treatment, or symptoms worsen, surgery may be the only remaining option. A discectomy may be performed to remove the herniated disc material that is irritating the spinal nerves. In very rare cases, the entire intervertebral disc needs to be removed. In these cases, fusion of the vertebrae with metal hardware can help provide stability to the spine.
