Brown rice can have high arsenic levels, and that can cause neuropathy, too, says Latov. Arsenic can slow down nerve signals and result in pain or other sensory problems. Most rice, whether brown or white, has some level of arsenic in it, but because arsenic tends to accumulate in the outer layers of rice, the brown variety has higher levels. The European Union has recommended that rice and rice products eaten by children have no more than 100 parts per billion of inorganic arsenic. But in 2016, the Food and Drug Administration tested 112 such products and found them to have an average of 103 ppb of inorganic arsenic. Peripheral neuropathy is a medical condition where nerve damage or dysfunction occurs, triggering common symptoms such as tingling or burning sensations or numbness in the hands and feet. The source of the neuropathy can often be difficult to diagnose but some of the factors which can contribute to the development of the condition include: vitamin deficiencies, traumatic injuries, diabetes, chemotherapy, alcoholism, infections, kidney disease, tumors and exposure to poisons.

Although these are some of the most frequently reported factors responsible for the development of the condition, many of the common foods people eat on a daily basis and in large quantities can actually worsen peripheral neuropathy. How To Get Rid Of Allergens

Many people experience airborne allergies that increase pain and joint swelling. However, plenty of these people cannot afford medical treatment to treat their pain. If youre in a similar situation, try the following techniques to minimize exposure to allergens:

  • Clean your house: Wear a face mask while you clean. Inspect around kitchens, bathrooms and sink cabinets for mold. If you find any, remove it with distilled white vinegar. Vacuum carpets and furniture thoroughly to remove pollen and pet dander.
  • Keep your windows closed: Its nice to keep the windows open when the weather is pleasant. However, an open window is a welcome mat for allergens, especially on days with high pollen counts. Run your air conditioner instead and change filters at least monthly.
  • Stay indoors on windy days: Wind blows pollen and other allergens around. If its blustery outside, curl up with a novel or tune in to your favorite TV show.

The Link Between Gluten And Nerve Pain

According to a review published in 2012 in Psychiatric Quarterly, nerve pain and other nerve problems may be the result of eating gluten if you have gluten sensitivity or celiac disease. Authors of this review point out that antibodies found in people with gluten sensitivity may interfere with neurotransmitter release and cause nerve problems. They also note that neurologic complications due to gluten sensitivity improved significantly in participants after a year of following gluten-free diets.

The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness reports that nerve pain, which can occur in any part of the body, often decreases or disappears in people with celiac disease after starting gluten-free diets.

Searching For Causes Of Nerve Pain

For many people, the cause of nerve pain cannot be identified even after extensive testing. This is called unexplained nerve pain, or idiopathic neuropathy. Unexplained nerve pain may still be due to nerve damage that occurred at some point, but current medical knowledge and testing can’t say how, when, or why.

About 15 million to 20 million Americans are believed to have some form of nerve pain, in most cases without a definite cause. It’s most likely to occur in people over age 60.

In some studies, almost half of the participants with unexplained nerve pain also had prediabetes. Some experts believe that the elevated blood sugars of prediabetes may be the main cause of this. Almost 20% of all people with diabetes already have some neuropathy by the time they are diagnosed.

Other studies have found that metabolic syndrome — the combination of high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, obesity, and prediabetes — is also common in people with unexplained nerve pain. These factors may contribute to the pain.

What About Blood Tests Skin Tests Stool Tests

They’re not useful as a guide to whether foods are causing your pain and muscle tension. Allergy lab tests often miss foods that people are reactive to, and warn them away from foods that are safe for them. An elimination diet, followed by a food challenge, is a better method.

Management Of Food Intolerances May Involve Elimination Diets

Once a diagnosis is made, a clinical history may help identify the role of diet or other factors that make symptoms worse.

The only reliable way to determine if diet is playing a role is by people being placed on a temporary elimination diet, under the supervision of a dietitian and medical practitioner.

If removing the food from the diet helps, this is followed by challenges under controlled conditions to identify food triggers which may need to be avoided in the future.

It is important that elimination diets are temporary, so they should only be undertaken for a short term trial period, under strict medical supervision, as a diagnostic tool. Prolonged restricted diets can lead to problems with adequate nutrition, particularly in children.

It is important to note that low salicylate and low amine diets should not be used for investigation of food intolerance until other potential causes for reactions are explored.

Neuropathy Tied To Anti

In some cases, peripheral neuropathy seems to be related to gluten consumptionspecifically, to the anti-gluten antibodies some people produce in response to gluten consumption.

In one study, researchers screened 215 patients with axonal neuropathy, a form of peripheral neuropathy involving damage to your axons, or bunches of nerves. A total of 140 of these had “idiopathic neuropathy,” meaning there was no apparent medical reason for their peripheral neuropathy.

The researchers tested those 140 people for antibodies to gluten using two celiac disease blood tests, the AGA-IgA test, and the AGA-IgG test. Although these tests are not thought to be very specific to celiac disease, they can detect if your body views gluten as an invader and is generating antibodies against the protein.

Thirty-four percent of those tested47 peoplehad high antibodies to gluten in one or both of those tests, compared with a 12% rate of high antibodies to gluten in the overall population. Those test results could indicate that the people had gluten sensitivity since some experts are recommending the AGA-IgA and the AGA-IgG as gluten sensitivity tests.

The researchers also performed endoscopies and biopsies on those people in the study suspected to have celiac disease and found that 9% of those in the “unexplained neuropathy” group actually had celiac. The celiac disease genesHLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 were found in 80% of all peripheral neuropathy patients.
